I ran over to Amazon to look at reviews of the steelbook editions from people who claim to already have them. They say it's still the SE's, but one review mentioned that Greedo doesn't fire.

There is a 0% chance of accuracy in that review.

^ Wook, I keep reading that, and can't make any sense of it for some reason....

Did I just have a stroke?

The same version has been released twice?

So there were dvds released in 2011 that were different than the 2004 set? And those were included with a bluray set released in 2013?
I'm not doubting, just trying to get things straight. I didn't think the same version had been released since the faces set.

No, just Blu Rays. Then a double dip in 2013 with DVD's of the 2011 versions.

Probably. But it wouldn't surprise me if just that one change was reverted as a feeble attempt to silence the Han shot first crowd.

It also wouldn't surprise me if the whole scene rotated in slow motion as Han dodged Greedo's blast Matrix-style while yelling "Nooooooo!"

The only thing that would surprise me at this point is a high quality release or restoration of the originals in the foreseeable future.

The steel books and the complete saga reissue will undoubtedly be fresh pressings of the discs, so it's not impossible for there to be differences from the 2011 version.

But it would be pretty weird to just make that one change (or rather, a reversal of a change), and to make it now, only a month before the new movie's release.

I actually do give credence to the original rumor from April, but I honestly don't expect to see Han shooting first (shooting only?) again until the 4K remaster makes its way out there.

I seem to remember the press release for the steelbooks making it very clear that they're identical to the existing blu rays apart from the packaging.

So certain are you?

I hope it does though :-)

I'd actually forgotten about that, joefavs. I could go and double check but I'm pretty sure you're right.

The bigger question in my mind is whether the rumored in-theater saga marathons on December 17th will be DCP's of the 2011 version or an unannounced debut of the 4k SE.

If they're showing the marathon in 3D, I would fully expect the latter.

Can you imagine the crowd's reaction seeing Han shoot first again?

Either way, it still won't be the OOT.

Would be a way for Lucasfilm to make the 3D conversions finally pay off.

Were all six shown in 3D at Celebration this year?

No, just the PT.

It was the first time RotS was shown in 3D if I'm not mistaken. I wasn't there, not even on the same coast, but I've shared my thoughts in the past about how three-dimensional RotS already looks in regular 2D projected on blu-ray. Assuming they didn't drop the ball on the conversion, it must look amazing.

Meanwhile, several signs point to this new 4k remaster of the OT having been done years ago, maybe even as early as 2008-2010. It takes a year to really do a thorough conversion of a two-hour movie into 3D. Titanic, a 3-hour movie, took more than a year. If the new 4k scan/remaster was ready before Disney even bought Lucasfilm, then they've had three years to convert the three movies.

On the other hand, I feel like we would've actually heard something about it by now.

What about ROTJ in 3d?

I think the "hype" for 3d is almost gone by now: some years ago it was all about 3d, now it's about 4k (or 8k, or whatever). 3d also got unpopular because glasses were needed until now.

This may be on of the reasons why Disney is holding 3d rereleases back. Sure, TFA will be on 3d too, but it was mostly shot that way, so it costs them nothing to show it in that format, after all.

Mediocre conversions and filmmakers reluctant to actually get "in your face" with films actually shot in 3-D probably hasn't helped much.

Why would they release a disc without Han shooting first months after releasing digital copies that don't? TWO distinct new versions in one year?

Ok, so the ANH digital is exactly the 2011 SE because they didn't remove the Fox logo, but its the thought that counts.

They won't release a new version now, probably because they still need to complete this new restoration. I guess we'll probably have to wait a few years.

The digital release was just easy money to kill time before TFA, so it makes sense that they used the most recent master available, the one for the 2011 rerelease.

The Model shots of the Original Trilogy would convert very well in to 3D... But there are an awful lot of 2D flat as a pancake imagery that will just refuse to translate in to 3D and many shots have little regard for 3D spacial realness.

That is of course unless you make a Special 3D version that compliments the film to be in 3D where it just will not translate into 3D at all.

Just saying that there is some very good reasons why the Original Trilogy will not be presented in 3D in it's Original and even Special Edition form.

And it's not worth having a put your glasses on take your glasses off scenario either. I doubt it will ever happen.

It will happen eventually, if only because they've finished converting the PT and the ST will also be in 3D.

If we consider that RotJ would be hitting theaters in 3D less than a year and a half from now (if they'd actually kept to the original, pre-disney schedule), it wouldn't be surprising if they simply decided to get it done now, ahead of Episode VII.

The announcement only states that the bonus features will be of previously released material.  It is silent on the films themselves.

Not much chance of that ever looking 3D is there...

No way this would ever look remotely 3D no matter what conversion you throw at it. It would need a 3D Model and well a totally new shot made.

You can go on and on. Paintings are not 3D it's like saying make the Mona Lisa in 3D on my TV. It's also not going to move it's motionless.

It's about as Pancake as they come.

This is why it wouldn't be surprising if Disney/Lucasfilm simply commissioned an SE 2.0 to not only redo stuff that wouldn't work in 3D but also fix blatant vfx errors still present in the 2011 version.

There have been plenty of conversions that are flat and pointless, they don't do them to look good.

Maybe that amazon reviewer is seeing the 2011 truncated greedo shoots for the first time, that version is still seeping into general awareness.

The best option for a Joy Ride experience OT is to just make a whole new version I agree.

But the original film needs to be restored first and how many times can you re-invent an old movie to alter it to try and make it something else, perhaps it would make it better perhaps it would end up worse.

I would like to see the old special effects crew (where possible) that worked on the OT to come back and actually make new shots for a new version but in the same vein as that exists in the movie with models and some 3d mattes perhaps but done using today's technology but made to look of the time. Imagine miniatures shot lord of the rings style but in the Star Wars universe, that is what I am talking about

And also it would be nice if they included some of the deleted scenes or planned scenes that were never completed at the time that would actually add to the experience perhaps (although it's not too much or too many) rather than some of the special editions additions that detracted from the film in some instances.

I mean like imagine Cloud City, Endor Platform, Yavin Base as a Miniature shot like Minas Tirith or Orthanc from LOTR, It would be Amazing.
