Minor security breach, no cause for alarm

At some point in the recent past, the ot.com web site experienced a security breach. We discovered that some existing files in the web directory had been modified, and a few new files had been added.

The only files that were modified were in the site's web root, indicating that someone managed to gain FTP access. The hosting service changed our FTP login credentials as a precaution and verified that all server software is running the latest security patches.

Out of an abundance of caution, we also requested that the database login credentials be reset as well (which caused the brief outage that occurred this evening). There is no indication of any security breach in the database server, and no indication that anyone has accessed our site's data. Resetting the login credentials was done strictly as a precautionary measure.

We'll keep you updated if any other issues arise. I'll keep this topic open in case anyone has any concerns, but again, there's no reason to think that anyone's account information has been accessed.

Was wondering what the heck was going on. What a relief!

Does that have anything to do with banner ads having gone missing?  Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

That's another situation, and a non-technical one. May or may not be permanent. No details to share right now.

Well, just so I'm clear, and as I know you value my input so highly...I gladly tolerate the banner ads in order to have the site stay up.

yes, if the ads keeps the site running, I am more than willing to put up with them.

Agreed on the above.  I have a unviersal adblocker in place, but if the banner ads really make a difference I'll gladly add an exception for OT.com in the future.

So a few days ago I got this security warning telling me that this site was trying to redirect me to a mirror site to get my login info. It happened while I was trying to visit off-topic. I ended up taking a few days break from this place due to it. So I'm not getting any security alerts right now so I've returned. I was wondering if anyone else has gotten similar issues?

That's a new one to me. Were you logging in from somewhere other than home, like wi-fi in a public place?

Nope same computer I'm using right now(home computer). I haven't gotten that warning since though so maybe it was a temporary thing that the site's security software took care of soon after it happened??? Then I just happened to try to visit here exactly in the moment before the software kicked into action? I don't know just guessing here...
