UPDATE: Season 2 is complete. I began work on Season 3 but my DVDs have issues. It figures as this is the “expensive season” set. I have bid on a few different sets, so please bear with me as I have to get a new box set delivered to upscale. UGH.

I could rip my set and send them to you if you want?

I agree, I don’t remember those X-Files DVDs as being very good visually. Another issue with The X-Files is the amount of 90s effects that weren’t very good to begin with. Upscaling those could introduce tons of aliasing and other problems. I think I have a DVD set around here somewhere and I’ll check out S2 at some point to see if my gear can do anything with it.

Millennium Season 1 has been upscaled, encoded and is in the ‘done’ pile. Beginning work on Season 2 next week!

Some of THE X-FILES DVDs had some weird compression but would be neat to have the OAR, including original font, which the BDs use a weird aspect ratio and NOT the original font. I own all 9 OG seasons of THE X-FILES on BD, but it’s weird that 20th Century FOX/TV used the film frame and not matched to TV ratio.
Excellent news regarding MILLENIUM Season 1 and the great upscaler you’re using!
Ever considered The Lone Gunmen and Harsh Realm for upscaling?

Zero DNR needed regarding restorations, etc… Subtitles please for fan projects.

The series is complete! Some notes for folks:

This show was nominated for 4 ASC awards, and many of the shots in each episode were highly stylized with mixing of media (8mm/16mm/35mm film, 480i video). The large majority of each episode is nice and clean 35mm film, but there are lots of shots with varying amounts of grain. I’m not a fan of using DNR if it substantially changes the director’s intention, so these episodes have been upscaled with ZERO DNR. That probably won’t please everyone, as there are scenes in each episode where the grain is very high, and you can see the grain moving in those shots, but my preference is to see the show as it was presented.

These episodes of “Millennium” were upscaled from compressed files (DVD source). If you watch the original DVDs, you’ll see this grain as well - on faces, backgrounds, etc. In some cases, the grain noticeably ‘shimmers’. My upscaling technique uses a combination of hardware and software and blending 4 different results for final output. The end product is gritty but true to the original. Apologies to those who find those grainy shots distracting.

Last note - the file sizes are large for these episodes. Well over half the show was shot in darkness or with varying degrees of dim/gray backgrounds (Chris Carter initially pitched the show as “Se7en” in Seattle). There was significant banding of backgrounds at lower bitrates, and I didn’t want to revisit this project in a couple of years, so each episode ranges from 2.6gb to 3.6gb. Season 1 is 58.7gb, Season 2 is 61.7gb and Season 3 is 74.2gb. Season 1 is 4:3 HD, seasons 2 and 3 are full HD.

If you own these episodes on DVD and would like a link to these fan upscales, please let me know. Cheers to all.

I have downloaded all of the episodes and I am just blown away by the quality.
They really do look like genuine HD video and not upscaled DVDs. The only problem
I have with this project is that now I have to find the time to watch the entire
series again.

I bought the PAL version of the DVD box sets all the way back in 2007, and I’d love to have the link. Please … 😃

Thank you so much … having just checked a few scenes, I must say this looks spectacular!

I wish someone would do such a thing for the TNG era Star Trek series’, especially DS9 and Voyager. As someone who is not a fan of recreated special effects, I’d love to see TNG itself getting this treatment as well. But I gues that will never happen.

First post to this great forum! I’m a long-time television producer and I’ve waited for YEARS for FOX and Chris Carter to release a proper HD set for “Millennium”. I’ve given up, so I am upscaling/regrading my DVD set using a combination of broadcast equipment and software. The pilot is finished and looks fantastic. Screenshots/clips/updates to follow.

Hi there, it looks like this has been released? Would love to take a look at your upscaling technique if possible. Huge fan of Millennium Thanks
