Military laser brings 'Star Wars' reality closer
Quote

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A U.S. Pentagon invention could make air combat resemble a battle scene from the movie 'Star Wars' with a laser so small it can fit on a fighter jet, yet powerful enough to knock down an enemy missile in flight.

Pretty cool stuff. I'm glad we're friends with England.

thats pretty sweet, but what does being friends with England have to do with anything? The first line reads

I've seen USAF "Jumbo-Jet" with heavy laser installed, a prototype of "missile hunter"...
US ARMY once stated that they will not equip their troops with small sized lasers to blind their opponents...
Soviets supposedly used lasers in 1960s (?) to combat the Chinese on their border...

And tell you what - I'm not happy with Star Wars coming closer to my reality...
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

Maybe I've read too much of the stuff on SDN. But this sounds more like REAL lasers. and not the Blasters and Turbolasers in Star Wars.

Yep, too much SDN.

That looks very cool. It will be interesting if they pull it off.

No weapons are cool.

Yes, I know that this is an anti-weapon invention, in that it shoots down missiles, but it's still a tool of war, and no doubt they will make better missiles that are immune to this laser, and no doubt one day they will make laser guns that can atomise a human. How 'cool'.

Read my sig.

War does not make one great.

At the time of my posting I was thinking it was better to be friends with them then have some terrorist cell use it against the good guys.

Keep in mind, it's the technology that's cool, not how they use it if it's for war.

yes, but from the article it seems that it was developed by the US, not England. So I repeat, what does being friends with England have to do with anything.

Sorry to be unclear, when I 1st read it I thought it was England developing it, not us. I thought we had some collaboration with them, but I didn't realize we were developing it. My bad. Still glad we're the ones developing it and not the bad guys.

The article seems to have originated in England, which is kind of strange. Unless it was actually a US news story that got picked up in the UK.

It is a CNN article, citing a Reuters article in London, talking about a Pentagon development program.
So, the story hops the pond twice, going from US to England and back to the US.

the u.s. gov. has only ever funded the space program becuase of their interest in space based weaponry, not for humanitarian reasons or exploration. Notice how after the cold war space race, how all of that funding dried up, the shuttle program is nearly 30 years old for god's sake. Space weapon satellites for the sole purpose of nuclear warfare. Although a laser would be good for defense but we all know the scientists won't just stop there, they will make even more deadly weapons to kill their fellow man. As a race were doomed if we continue with this kind of thinking. Just think of the countless billions of dollars being spent on the iraq war, could be used to finding a cure for cancer, to find a new fuel source to end the energy crisis, or even space exploration. I know your talking about deploying the laser on a plane but i'm talking about reagon and the strategic defense initiative or sdi for short, which reagon and bush sr. tried to put into action but was never actually built and billions spent, or so the government says, who nows if they have a working prototype. It scares the hell out of me though when we have madmen on both sides, both thinking their right in god's eyes on the nuclear button. We need to have leaders who respect human life, not just looking for a war excuse, although the taliban had what was coming to them. But we should not stoop to their level of depravity when we can make smart and informed decisions, and proceed wisely and intelligently.

I had to ask my Dad about some details: Sino-Soviet border conflict on Ussuri River, 1969.
The whole thing was finally solved... only in the last year (!).
