Midnight Cowboy HD (Released)

 (Edited)

After buying two different releases of this movie (R2 and R1 special edition) I became really fed up with the awful source they used for both. An amazingly good HD master was aired on HDNet (BEFORE the R1 SE came out), so I’m making a DL DVD (or possibly two SL DVDs as it’s a cheaper and slightly better quality-wise alternative) out of it. I’m also adding as a little special feature two alternate opening titles, using I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City by Nilsson and Lay Lady Lay by Bob Dylan, as they were written specifically for this movie. It would be great to include the Criterion LD commentary too if somebody could rip it.
Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll upload it somewhere.

Kakyoin,

Great project! I was planning on preserving the criterion version sometime this summer, but since there's an HD source out there, your idea sounds much better. I actually have some time next week, so I can probably capture it then. I will PM you when it's done.

Criterion Projects done: She's Gotta Have It, The Princess Bride, The Fisher King

In Progress Criterions: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (99% done), Taxi Driver (90% done), Citizen Kane (50% done), Othello (99.99% done)

Possibly coming next: Ghostbusters, The Magnificent Ambersons (the theatrical cut, a reconstruction according to Prof. Carringer's script analysis, and the colorized version)

That'd be great, thanks!
Anyway, since the source is 1080i, would a deinterlace make the final DVD look better?

DO NOT bother.

And I'd definitely do a dual-layer version. Flipping/changing discs is soooooooo laserdisc.

Ok I won't bother
Anyway here's the cover I did:

it doesn't look exactly as I intended since I messed up the template a bit, but in the final version the spine will be more centered and there should be more space between the title on the front cover and the bottom border. I'll distribuite it in a 3072 x 2136 TIFF file for maximum quality (since I used actual high resolution sources).

Just turned them on, sorry. Weird feature in a forum, to have PMs disabled by default

Kakyoin, how did you capture the source files off of HDNet?
