Meco Star Wars - 32 years later

Author

The radio station I listen to has a daily program called 10@10, where they play ten songs from one year, at 10:00 AM. Occasionally they play ten songs from one decade, one from every year. Today was one of those days. When they got to 1977, the song was the Meco disco version of Star Wars.

Man, that thing got a ton of airplay that year. I wasn't crazy for it in 1977 because it seemed sacrilegious to tamper with the music from Star Wars.

Today - I voted for it to get Best Of Set. Guess I've mellowed a little. ;-)

For the unwashed...

My sister bought that Meco LP.
Hated it back then, but like yourself, I enjoy hearing it now

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

I'll never forget the day I walked into my old local used CD store and there they had Meco Star Wars on CD, mint condition. My dad used to use the main theme to do his magic shows, but one day the LP melted after an outdoor show. I'm not sure if I was alive back then (doubt it), but its a part of my family history, I guess.

I love it.

Anchorhead, you wouldn't happen to be in the LA area would you? 10@10 is a local thing around here too - best station does it! I woulda thought it wasn't on today thanks to album-sides wednesday though...

I used to live in L.A, but not anymore.  I assume you're talking about 100.3?  That's not the station I listen to.

There are a few stations around the country that have a 10@10.  Great feature, always a lot of fun to hear the songs and news clips from a long ago year.  Well, unless it's one of the years that reminds me of how much time has passed because I actually remember the songs playing on the radio that year - like today.  :-(

*edit*

Damn song has been stuck in my head all day.  Good thing I like it now. ;-)

I love it- I hear it every once in a while on the oldies station here.

I love the fact that it's a medley & combines some of the best parts of the soundtrack in one track. I love the transitional bit that comes right before the cantina band segment.

ah, Meco. great memories.

I also had a Pickwick published cassette of "The Sounds of Star Wars" by the Sonic All Stars. I used to listen to it loads on my Dad's hi-fi, day in day out, must have driven my parents nuts!

It's awful synth, but great nostalgia value. It was published elsewhere as "The Millennium Orchestra" - like iTunes, just listen to these previews!

But to a Star Wars obsessed 8 yr old seeing this in the bargain bin was awesome!

It was fun piling into the Odeon and waiting for a film to start up and having the disco versions of Star Wars, Superman or Close Encounters pumping away later joined by the similarly reworked Imperial March (it was either that or Elton John and Kiki Dee).

By the time ROTJ hit the cinemas disco had really died but like Dracula it always swirled around waiting to reform out of the space dust.

Disco happens to be one of my favourite kinds of music. It's the perfect rithm to dance to, in my opinion. My dad used to be a Dj during the golden era of private radio here during the late 70s and trough all the 80s. We have the original double lp from Saturday Night Fever (altough now it's broken, wore out from too much plays, shame..) among his vast lp collection. We didn't have this record, but when I first heard it some years ago I immediately fell in love with it. Star Wars came out when disco music was all the rage, so it should be natural that the two things would marry so well.

I really like how he played with all the different themes. One of my favourite renditions (if not THE favourite) is the Cantina theme. I could listen to that part all day.

Meco is dope!  I have 3 of his CD's and a few vinyl 45's.  One of them is even autographed.
