Mandatory Tipping Poll

Yea or Nay?

I'm in favor of tipping if and ONLY if the service warrants it, and even then I'm inclined to give less than 15%.

I was thinking the same thing.

My tipping goes like this:

If I feel that my service was mediocre, I'll give just a little bit (like if my meal was $20, then I'd only give about $1.50)

If I feel my service was good, I'll give 15%

If I feel like my service was great, and the waiter/waitress was really nice, then I'll give more.

If my service sucked, then I won't tip at all.

Exactly my thoughts. Although I belive most didn't get the reference.

I usually tip on restaurants and hotels, and that's it.

Immediately I thought of Mr. Pink when I read this thread. Jeeze, it's one thing to bitch about how much one pays in taxes, but to avoid tipping 15% on good service? That's cheap, man. Totally Steve Buscemi.

Really BAD service gets little to nothing. I will often leave a penny on really bad service just to drive home the point that I thought about it and established worth accordingly. If the service was adequate, 15%. If it was awesome, 20%. Usually it falls somewhere in-between as I like to round the bottom line to whole dollars when practical.

For those who don't know the etiquette, you should tip on the pre-tax value of the meal, not the bottom line. Also, check the bill to see if the gratuity was automatically added in. That's often the case with large parties. My family all went out for Thanksgiving this year and the gratuity was added in. We almost missed that. Adding another 20% onto 20% would've been, what, a 45% tip in the end?

When service is really bad, if you don't tip at all, usually they server will usually just think you are cheap. If you tip something like a penny or a nickel, then they are more likely to get the point that their service sucked.

I don't like the automatic gratuity for large parties thing, but resturants do it because large parties have a nasty tendancy to take up lots of time, servers, and space, and then they never tip or tip really low, figuring that either "someone else must of got the tip" or that "the big order we gave makes up for it."

Yeah, ok, now I remember. Great movie, and Mr. Pink was the only one to walk away as I remember.

It's like this societal moor that a person MUST get 15% because of the job they're working. They get 15% if the service is outstanding, anything less is proportionate. I view tipping as a separate tax.

A general rule I live by is to reward good service, and punish bad. None of this 15% shit.

If someone gives mediocre service, they get a mediocre tip.

If someone gives good service, they get a good tip.

If someone gives bad service, they get ratted out to the manager.

As an aside, you can get some really great stuff in the mail if you legitimately complain about bad service/product.

For example, one time my wife & I went into a Timothy's Coffee House because she really wanted a hot chocolate. The managersaid they were too busy to make it, and when I looked around there were literally 4 people in the coffee house.

Next day, I call up the public relations office (*hint* skip the customer service line - they're usually patronizing knobs) and told them how my experience soured me on the chain, and that I would be letting my friends, coworkers and family know exactly how much the corporation values their patronage.

Within a week I had over $100 worth of coupons in the mail...I think I drank free coffee for like, 2 weeks.

I think tipping is something that comes from good manners, but, conversely, I think it's just as rude for an establishment to expect anybody to tip them. A tip is just that. I surely tip all the time, but it's a gift, not part of their salary, not part of their expected pay. And, on the other side of the coin, even though this has never happened to me, I hate how establishments make people "pool" tips together and then divide them evenly. Screw that. Tips are based on service and somewhat on luck, and if you happen to be the lucky waiter/waitress who gets a $50 tip, then you should be entitled to be able to do with it what you wish.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Personally, I feel that if you don't tip at all the waiter might be stupid enough to think "Oh well they just forgot" that's why it's better to leave like one or two pennies to make the statement "I didn't forget, but you suck!"

Some places actually do that? I'm going to have to start asking about that before I give out my cash. I'm not going to pay a nice tip if it goes to everybody.

Rob, I don't even want to think about the types a services you might possibly be tipping for.

Tiptup, the whole pulled tips thing is getting pretty common anymore. I think it is retarded. It completely defeats the whole point of tipping. You can have a truly awful waiter and he gets as much in tips as the most polite of waiters. This type of thing encourages crappy waiting.

My wife was in New York last month and went out to eat with her sister at a Japanese restaurant. She said the service wasn't bad, but it wasn't the greatest. When they got they got the bill it already had a 20% tip added right into the price. I think forced tipping like that also defeats the purpose of tipping. You don't even have to do a good job and you still get a 20% tip.

I only tip my servers and barkeep and normally about 25% (I've done the work), I do not feel any other service deserves or earns tips as here in New Mexico those are the onloy jobs that are still paid the cash minimum wage at $2.12 / hour!!!

Everyone else makes between $5.15 - $7 / hour and still they put up TIP jars at Starbucks and other joints like that. LAME very LAME

I usually tip everyone My Blue Heaven style, be it pizza guys, bellhops, skycaps, paper boys. The only occupation I don't like tipping is bartenders. I'll give them something...but I can't understand giving the guy a dollar for the literally 3 seconds of work it takes to grab a bottle of beer and hand it to me.
