Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal — Page 45

I don't think any lawyer could be helpful in a situation like this. I don't even think a "grey area" could be found.

This has already been released on laserdisc to DVD transfers, 16mm, 8mm etc etc. Why should one this be any different? Yes it's 35mm and the quality is better, but technically no more or less legal than all the other releases/preservations going on here on a daily basis...

I'm not a lawyer and my advice cannot and should not be construed as legal advice, but the forums maybe better off with a general legality discussion thread to alleviate these as the thread turns and to collect our delusions of grandeur into one big humorous mess.

I doubt the camera rig that has been created is not nearly as high quality as a real film scanner.  Maybe that is why -1 has been posting all the details here.  Shouldn't the possibility be considered though?  Are people willing to see someone go to prison because they want to see SW again?

Good idea.

read the first 10 pages of this thread.

it's been covered.

who said i'm posting all the details here?

this is a tiny fraction of what's been going on.

all i see is some fragments of pictures,

screenshots, what looks like a camera and film,

a trailer, and vague descriptions. something anyone

with a few frames, a scanner, and some clips that

could easily be altered.

if that's proof of something, you must be easy

to convince. i wouldn't be, until i see some

finished footage or the whole thing.

I second that idea.  Let's not derail the thread.

Also, this site (and the internet in general) is FULL of star wars re-edits and restorations.  This one might be higher quality than some others but it's still not competition for the blu rays (which are, themselves, easily downloaded by anyone inclined to do so).  I've seen articles about Adywan's versions on Cracked.com and other sites, he's not in jail (right?)

Dude is obsessed with LucasFilm taking legal action against this particular project.

Not going to happen, restorations have been going on for years and years and this site has been talking about them in explicit detail for nearly as long. Lucasfilm so obviously doesn't care, get over it.

That's a garbage matte, *waves hand* pay it no mind.

much like harmys blue tinted shots..

we also have a few scenes, like the

vader conference shots that show some

changes in the coloring between grayish,

green, and blue.. i'll try to pull up some

examples..

i think we're going to make those look one

consistent shade also..

in the meantime, here's a little bit of the

cleanup on reel 4, the results look great,

and not too overly clean... we're only removing

the dirt, and scratches on the film, NOT what is

originally there.

the video has some weave and floaty camera

going on, that will be stabilized.. i think it's hard

to figure out what it might have looked like in the

theater, because it was probably somewhat shaky

there also.. but all the newer versions of the shot

look more stable. i prefer it that way.

Wow, what a difference. I love the idea that you guys are doing an actual physical restoration/clean-up of the film itself. BTW is the film actually this red or is it just due to the conditions under which the photo was taken?

yes, these are from the red reel print,
that we are using for a test archive
and extracting some frames and scenes from.

I almost got a bit worried when the photos were switched! I'm glad it was the other way around. :)

Anyway, I bet this method will save you a lot of digital cleanup work. The movie is in good hands!

Boring! I remember a time when I couldn't wait to read the next Stinky post, but now all I get is on-topic stuff about--

With regards to the red-tinted print, there was an article not too long ago (I can't seem to find it now) about the print they had at the National Film Registry. Their's was pink as well, but they used some sort of color correcting magic and made it all work.
