re-read it hahaha i wrote something different now. as for the necklace idea. what i am talking about someone saying ok we need to preserve this artifact, and then deciding that they are going to make a prefect replica that fixes errors using something that lasts longer and proclaim that as the artifact. thats essentually what people want GL to do with the OOT, they want him to refinish the whole thing correct errors and everything and then give it to them, in the name of preserveing cinimatic history. and what i am saying is that the request they make is contradictory. if he makes all the changes they want they are infact not preserving history, they are changing it into something thats 'better' and claiming that to be the historical product. see what i am getting at. in both cases the original thing has a flaw with SW its the fusyness or lines or lightsaber falts. in the necklace the material wasnt ideal for long time preservation. in both cases things are getting changes in the name of preservation when infact you are not preserving it when you make those changes.

Yes I understand now what you are getting at and I agree. But I also feel that if he's gonna release it on DVD to stop us whining he may as well do it properly. I don't want it cleaned up or fixed in any way - I just want the best possib;le transfer he and his colleagues are capable of. This is Star Wars for god's sake - treat it with some respect.

I personally am not that bothered about the anamorphic debate - I just want Star Wars preserved on DVD so I can watch it over and over without worrying about my VHS degrading and snapping, but the fact that he seems to be pulling this shit on purpose to rub shit in our faces irritated me enough to write to the guy. He's clearly insane.

When bands release their old albums on CD, they don't sound all crackly and shit like a vinyl, they sound like a CD. And that's because the original recording, the band's original performance, sounded that way, and the crappy medium of vinyl altered that sound to something less than it was. By cleaning up the masters and laying them onto a CD, we get a better, clearer sound. It's the same in this case - 35mm is incredibly clear and beautiful to watch - and DVD can go some way towards replicating that (further than VHS or Laserdisc anyway). The technology exists to allow us to watch one of the greatest, most seminal movies of all time in a good, clear way, so why not let us? It's just spiteful and sad.

When lots of bands release their old material to CD, they remaster them with all kinds of dynamic compression, even to the point of clipping, just so they can be louder and hotter. Not unlike oversaturating colors or too much edge enhancement on certain DVDs. Your analogy generally works -- CD is capable of a better approximation of the original sound than is vinyl, just as anamorphic DVD is a better approximation of a film than is VHS or LD -- but it fails when many (most?) modern CDs are taken into account.

thats true but this probably is the best he has, with the money he wants to put into it. to get what you guys want would probably require him to go back to the original film, and then just like he did in 93. Remaster the whole thing, along with the THX(or what ever it is) sound and everything. it is very likely that this is the best version of the OOT that is easily at his disposal, and since he is doing it as a favour to the dieheart fans he doesnt want to put all the money into redoing everything. i think that if he does everything you suggest he would just release it in its own DVD. but he doesnt want to do that cause i think somewhere in GL mind he thinks that if he spends all that money on redoing everything from scratch he will sell at a lose. so many people out there have the dvds already from last year.i dont think he expects LOTS of people to buy these just cause the OOT is on them, and that is why you have high cost for them in the first place.

and since he is doing it as a favour to the dieheart fans

There's that "favor" meme again. A "favor" at twenty bucks a pop, times three movies, per person. The very paragon of generosity.

yes it is a favor. he doesnt have to release them, and infact by releasing them he is hurting the sales for the 30th anniversory editions next year. the only reason he is, is cause some of the fans want them so bad

I see what you mean, but, ignoring the fact that many artists choose to 'tweak' their music for it's CD release, the analogy still holds. The studio tapes are the original sound, or, if you want to get even closer to the 'original sound' the noise you would have heard if you were standing in the room during the recording is the original sound. Vinyl is merely a medium for getting that sound to the ears of listeners, and when CD came along and rose the bar for the quality of the sound that could be given to listeners, it made sense to 'redeliver' that sound using this new improved method. Today's DVDs are capable of delivering movies with clearer picture and sound than VHS or Laserdisc, and Lucas should deliver Star Wars in the best way he can. That doesn't mean he has to alter the movies, repaint lighsabers, remove garbage mattes, mess around with the colour balance or any of that stuff. He just has to take whatever masters he has, be it the original negs or a later print, and present it on DVD as best he can. And that is all we are asking.

Hey, if Mommy was buying the ice cream, then, yeah, I'd be a bastard for throwing it back in her face. But I'm a big boy now. I buy my own ice cream. And if I ask for chocolate with sprinkles, and I get melted chocolate with jujubes instead, I have every right to be pissed! Favor, shmavor. You give that man far too much credit, Shim.

This is true. All of the naysayers beforehand (mostly under-13 year old prequel fans) were of the mentality, when they said that we (mature OOT-lovers that we are) should be grateful with what we have yada yada yada. But this is not a consumer mentality - that's the mentality of someone who has been GIVEN something, for FREE (and that's probably what happened in the case of under-13 year old PT fans - from their parents). But we're not getting something for free. We are PAYING MONEY that we SWEATED, BLED, and CRIED over, for GOODS and SERVICES, and thus, it is not unfair to expect a quality product and satisfaction.

But I think what we're failing to see is that despite all the announcements and hoopla, the OOT will be 'Bonus Materials' in a DVD set, not the main deal, and it will probably be treated as such by LFL. Just a bunch of extras.
MTFBWY. Always.

Hell, if it was treated like an LFL extra usually is, then we'd have no complaints at all. I mean, come on, going out of their way to complete special effects for deleted scenes just to pop them on a DVD as bonus material? This is probably the first bonus feature they've ever done that's crap.

you know what would make me laugh my ass off. if lucas all of a sudden decided to cancel the release to spite the fans due there reaction. he could so easily do it too by saying that we have decided that next year we are release the 30th anniversary editions, so there is no need for a release this year.

Oh no, Lucas is going to cancel his laserdisc bootlegs just to spite me. I'll have to go back to watching my laserdisc bootlegs.

I don't pay for bootlegs.

And if anybody wanted a copy of any fan preservations or edits, I give them out freely.

Personally I would PREFER if LFL decided to say "you know what, we realize that next year IS the 30th anniversary of SW so we decided just to wait another year and DO IT RIGHT instead of rushing out an inferior product."

There is NO ONE here, I'd wager, who wouldn't be willing to wait until May 2005 for a decently mastered OOT on DVD even if there were no extras, etc.

And on the ice cream analogy I'll take what theredbaron said one step further. Imagine the kid or adult finally got to the ice cream shop, paid their money, and the owner of the shop THREW THE GODDAMN ICE CREAM CONE ACROSS THE COUNTER AND SAID "HERE'S YOUR F**KIN' ICE CREAM YOU BABY- ARE YOU HAPPY? HUNH ARE YOU? NOW GET THE BLOODY HELL OUT OF MY SHOP AND THANKS FOR GIVING ME YOUR MONEY!"

Then again in Shim logic I imagine the owner would have been doing the patron a FAVOR by helping them make the decision whether to buy ice cream there or not in the future.

A delayed release of the OOT on DVD seems like a more sensable thing to do. Give it the treatment it deserves (anamorphic widescreen, image enhancement, sort'a like the treatment they gave the Indiana Jones Trilogy). Better still, release it as a seperate boxed set and maybe put in some extra's like the original "The Making Of Star Wars", "SP-FX" and "From Star Wars To Jedi - The Making Of A Saga" documentaries. And than see which version sells best ...

However, I think this is what will happen...
September 2006 will bring us the re-release of the 2004 version of Episodes IV to VI with the OOT as extra material.
In may 2007 the 30th Anniversary Edition box set will be released, which will include altered/enhanced versions of Episodes I to III and the september 2006 release of Episodes IV to VI.

But who knows, GL may surprise us and:
a) include anamorphic widescreen enhanced version of the OOT in the 30the Anniversary Edition box set, or
b) release an anamorphic widescreen enhanced version of the OOT in a seperate box set.

I'm hoping for b), but I'm not going to hold my breath ...

I've never bought a bootleg. And I double checked the guidelines in the Important Announcements forums, and it doesn't say I can't talk about bootlegs, except "bootlegs of current or recent theatrical releases, screeners, (or) pre-retail/retail DVDs." If you like, I can call them "fan preservation effots," "samizdat reconstructions," or perhaps "personal media-shifted backup copies." But it call comes down to the same thing in the end.

I'm still waiting for the announcement that George Lucas is personally cancelling this fall's DVD product line out of spite for a few tens of thousands of fans. It'll be neat watching all those distributors and retailers who have already placed orders scramble to issue refunds and find something else to fill their shelves. And those dumb t-shirts will become instant collectors' items.

wmgan, pirates steal things off ships and bootleggers manufactured and distributed alcohol during Prohibition.
