Info Wanted: MagnoliaFan edit, how was it done?

how was the magnoliafan edits of ep.1 & ep.2 created, what software was used to edit the dvd Vobs, add custom subs etc.? I’m interested in maybe doing my own interpretation andwould love to know where to start.
