MSNBC Story: Why are Star Wars video games better than the prequels?

I don’t know if you all can see this because its from the msnbc Canadian site. I imagine there is an American equivalent link. Its a (video) news story discussing how the storytelling in the new video games such as Force Unleashed II are better and more interesting than Lucas’ attempts in the prequels. Thought it was an interesting examination. Purists may complain that FUII has trendy things like slow-motion/bulletime, and that its too violent and caters to adult audiences looking for something “cool” (whatever that means), and I guess there’s some truth in that, but I have to admit the trailer for FUII is better than anything I’ve seen Lucas write since 1977.

If it had been a movie, FU would have been liked more in general than the PT because it's constantly violent and dark. People seem to like that.

As plots go, a chosen one superhero with obsence Force powers founding the Rebellion and fighting lots and lots and lots of large monsters, is just as far from the spirit of the OT as anything in the PT, albeit in a different direction.

Star Wars was definitely a product of 1977.  I wouldn't mind if the prequels didn't look like 1977 and more like 2002 if they would have had an engaging story, likable characters, and actors who know how to act.  I wouldn't even mind bullettime if it was used in a decent movie.

"FU II", is Lucasfilm trying to tell us something? ;)

Seriously though, the previous game is a fun "what if?" scenario. Especially the bonus levels with where the player character replaces Vader at Palpy's side, and eventually makes Luke turn!

I sometimes wonder if Splinter of the Mind's Eye would have been as dark as the novel if Lucas had actually filmed it.

The darkside ending and the subsequent bonus levels that were released for it were entertaining. But I appreciated the "canonical" good ending a lot more because it ends with birthing hope for a better future without the empire and then later Luke takes his place as A New Hope.

I have to agree with Sluggo and Boost

The OT was a product of it's time(77-83).But for that time period it was far in advance of anything else(Look how Star wars overshadowed rivals such as Close Encounters , Superman and Alien -which are three other classics in their own right)

They  may look cool,but those trailers are only 3-4 minutes long.They are not a film.

The action is very "Matrix meets Attack of the clones (in the Genosian arena)".

Besides back in 1997-1998,was not everyone drooling over those phantom menace trailer snippets like they were the second coming?

On edit-Having just watched the TPM trailer for the first time in years---I think it is much cooler than any of those game trailers.

 

 

 

 

 

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

This is an excellent point.  It is easy to make even the worst projects look good when you are only showing a minutes of highlights carefully edited together.  Beware the trailer!
