The Jedi novel went a long way in my appraisal of the movie, and it wasn't positive.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

When you say "Novelisation", are you referring to a novel that was based on the movie? Or the novel that was written before the movie was released?

And Hotrod... assuming you were serious, which I am unsure of... it is a bit silly to suggest that when GL cast the Emperor in ROTJ he had the idea in his head that he would use the same actor in the prequel movies later. It's not like he signed the guy up for TPM or AOTC at the time. He could easily have said no.

The novel based on the movie, and the one released before the movie are the same book.

As for the Emperor thing, I dunno man.
To me Lucas is a genious, he came up with the best story ever told.
So I like to think he knew esactly what he had in mind.

Thing is, Lucas has always said that Star Wars is meant to bee seen from the point of view of 3PO and R2. So he must of had the actors in mind to reprise all their roles when making the PT. I don't think anyone else could play 3PO aswel as Antony Daniels (Although I'm not super keen with what they done to 3PO in AOTC..The slapstick stuff that is...but thats just a minor niggle).

So yeah, Lucas had the all the actors who could reprise thier roles in the PT from the OT in mind!!

Oh I don't know, I'm just going on now...I don't even knoe WTF I'm on about anymore!!

The best story EVER told? Errrr, you're referring to movies only, I assume? If not, you must watch very little tv and seldom read a book.

As for GL being "a genius": c'mon, man, that's bs. He had ONE good idea in his whole lifetime, how "genius" is that? Definitely not the standard definition of the term. Besides, thank the talented screenwriters he hired for the OT instead of praising GL. Simply compare the great OT with the mediocre PT dialogues (which GL wrote .... the latter, I mean), and then tell me again he was a genius. Pffft!

Most geniuses create their product of ingenuity all by themselves. As I stated in my last post, if it hadn't been for those talented screenwriters, the OT wouldn't have been nearly as good (just watch the PT for comparison).

Get my point?

He had a great concept, and it spanned 3 terrific movies. What Lucas did, however, is take his genious concept and try to stretch it into six movies, with snazzy effects and weak scripts hindering the last 2. The overall ideas of th origional 3 have been spread thin and watered down. I just don't think he knows when to stop.

As for "genius"... I'm not sure that word fits him. Is there a word for someone who creates something so good and then (more or less) destroys it?

A comparison to GL's stuff then and now to say the OT would be nothing with outside help is BS. I mean, ANH was good and he directed it by himself if I remember, like TPM, AOTC, and Epi. 3. Now what, you're trying to say by the same logic then ESB wouldn't have been good if GL directed it, forgetting he directed ANH in the first place? I am sorry, but I think he gets too little credit for the films in the first place and this confirms my theory even more.

Anyway, he may not have directed Empire and Jedi, but he was always on set, and pretty much had a lot to do with them.
The only reason he didn't direct the 2 films was because ANH wiped him out a little!

And again, he came up with the whole of Star Wars, and to me...me...it's the greatest story ever!!!...To me..........get that!!!!

As for me, I find it ONE of the best stories out there, book and movies. Not the best (nothing is) or one of very few, but still awesome. And as for me also, I do read. You know, things like Moby Dick, Roots, Tarzan of the Apes, War and Peace, LOTR, Harry Potter, Star Wars books(EU), John Adams(latest biograghy from '01), the adult Left Behind Series, Bible KJV, and a partridge in a pear tree.

true, GL receives way too little credit!!!!

there is NO such thing as a movie nowadays where you can say that sole credit goes to the director! NO MOVIE!!!! so of course there is credit for all the people that have helped him, but still, he is the one that instigated this!

One more thing about the book and the comic.

Like the comic adaption the original book had the scenes with biggs (on Tatooine and on Yarvin). Additionally it had the Jabba the Hutt scenes in the hangar. (For I'm not completely sure if it was set in the hangar, but the two (Han and Jabba) met in this scene and Jabba was not described as a slug!

When the Special edition was released there was a new comic released. In this one the scenes with biggs on Tatooine were misseng, the Jabba scene was altered to a Jabba-slug scene and the Biggs scenes on Yarvin were in it again. As far as I recall the kissing scene between Luke and Leia was changed, too (short kiss before they swung over the gap on the death star). While in the OT-comic book Leia kisses Luke on his mouth she kisses him on the cheek in the SE-comic-adaption. (While the kiss in the film did not change.)

Why the book has not be changed when the SE was released I have no idea. Maybe it has to do with the problem that GL is not the true author of the book but Alan Dean Foster and so the book would have to be completely rewritten?

I don't think that's the real point. Just think, if TPM and AOTC were not part of the Star Wars saga, I'd find them confusing, yet great movies. It would have fans, like SW has. But the thing is, we keep comparing it to the OT, we are desperatedly trying to find something to connect us to the OT, like Vader, the empire, Tie-Fighters, Luke, Solo... That's why GL is bringing (****Spoiler****) Chewbacca back to episode 3 (****end of spoiler****). And when we see such characters as Jar Jar, a child Anakin, Padmé, we fail to make that conection. I mean, try to remember what went through your minds when you saw the death star plans on episode 2...

But then again, yes, the PT has some corny dialog, not-so-good acting, and some flaws, and that adds up to what I've said. That's why some fans hate it...
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I read the SW novel some time ago, but from memory it had many differences from the movie. I recall that R2D2 had claws instaed of wheels, and Vader made some sarcastic remark about the Emperor at one point which I though really conflicted with his character in ANH, which is rather subserviant. Maybe I should read it again.

As far as GL not recieving enough credit, I must disagree... sure, SW is a great movie, and the guy had alot of great ideas and vision (not sure if "genious" is being too generous but it is a subjective term) but surely compared to, say, a heart surgeon or such, he recieves much more credit than he is due? Comparatively speaking. I think he has been more than compensated in terms of his fanbase, and his bank account.

Compensation and credit can be two different things. I am saying some of the critics here on the site would give the impression he wrote a draft, helped to cast the actors maybe, and then everyone else took over, which is then argued is not happening in the PT. I am not saying that is EXACTLY what people are saying, but it is heavily implied.

That is how I look at it, I mean I do agree he was helped alot, but since I don't think the prequals suck and he directed ANH, I don't buy into this, well he was only so good then and he shouldn't have made/make Star Wars movies logic.
