MORE CHANGES!!! (for the 2004 OT DVD release) — Page 11

The whole reason the scene was cut was because Lucas wasn't happy with the way Jabba looked (IE a man). If he had been able to use the same puppet that appeared in ROTJ, then the scene wouldn't have been cut in the first place. There is an interview where he recounts this, I think it is on one of the OT videos.

A very good decision to cut the scene I think. Can you imagine ROTJ where a man is used instead of the fat slug thing we all know and love? It just wouldn't be the same...

First of all, Bobba Fett originally was not on ANH, BUT... he was probably created around that time, as he appears in the tv special. I belive his mask was one of the rejected Vader masks, back when they were doing concept art, around '74, '75.

And I remember seeing somewhere that GL intended to have a stop-motion creature on the man's place. That would be horrible, just horrible! Worse than today's Jabba...

I'm not sure what the details were behind Jabba (human or just a human stand in for stop motion added in later), but Boba Fett was definitely NOT supposed to be in there. The reason his figure came out pre-ESB is, like Ric says, because he was in the Holiday Special on TV. He was one of the featured characters. Don't worry, this confused me too because I had no idea that a TV HS existed until a year ago. It does explain a lot though.

So, does anyone have any idea where the concept for Boba Fett came from? It's just my opinion that, if he was created by the Holiday Special people, that GL would never have used him like he did (given his quotes regarding the special). Then again, maybe that's why he appears to be swallowed by the Sarlacc in ROTJ. Maybe Fett's just one of those creatures that Lucas isn't able to get rid of, no matter how hard he tries...

The whole Bobba Fett thing has always been a mistery to me. When I watched the original trilogy for the first time, I didn't even care for him, and for my total surprise, he was a very popular character. I still can't understand exactly why. Maybe it was because of the mistery surrounding him.

About his date of creation, I've managed to get some information and I think I figured it out. His armor was a rejected early Darth Vader concept, which had the Lord of the Sith as a bounty hunter, for some weird reason. When Star Wars became a huge hit, plans for a sequel started, and one of the first characters that came up for ESB was Bobba, pretty much from the original DV concept. Since he was created so soon, he was able to make his first appearence in a 1978 cartoon, in the HS. His character was not well defined, tough, as I belive he actually helped Luke on that cartoon.

Maybe that's why he's so popular, because he was available to the audience so early that they created some sort of expectation for the character.

Boba Fett was added into the film by ILM for the SE. He was played by former ILMer Mark Austin.

They shot him against bluescreen and then composited him into the scene.

Fett's first appearance was for the Holiday Special. He was also offered as a special order figure by Kenner around the same time. It first came with a firing missile from his jetpack, but when a few kids were hurt by firing missiles from Battlestar Galactica toys, Kenner stopped production of the Fett firing missile figure. It was never available to the public.

Falacy (sp?).

The shooting jetpack was never actually released as a toy. It was a concept only. I've seen the concept toy. He comes in the all grey-blue that most of Boba is molded in and his rocket is red and the launch pin is also red. He was never painted and never released. The accidents, if they ever happened, were in test groups. I've read in several places that the figure was never released. However, some of the concept models have gotten out and are worth more than the lives of any ten of us combined. If you've seen a shooting jetpack Boba Fett figure and he's painted, then it was a customized figure that someone made. Several people did do it. But the difference, if you're looking at one, is that the actual concept model was never painted.

Re-read my post Bossk. I said it was never released. It was offered for order with the firing jetpack on the blister packs for Star Wars figures. The BG toys did have firing missiles and one family sued the maker when their kid shot himself in the eye with a Viper missile.

The Fett figure initially was on the back of the blister packs and you could send proofs of purchase to get one, but they soon blacked out the pics on the backs of subsequent packs and changed it to a non-firing Fett.

LOL...

Didn't the toy company expect this? Kids hurting their eyes with toy missles? I bet they did some research on how much profit they would make with the missle-firing toy (A), how much profit from a non-missle firing toy (B), and the amount of money spent off-court settlement with these cases (C). They figured it out that A-B > C, so they released with a missle anyway.

Last time I read anything about figures and their worth, the 2 most expensive vintage action figures were:

$2500 for one of the 8 unpainted Rocket-firing Boba Fetts that were made for "production". I've seen pictures of them, plus a number of prototypes made. ToysRGus
Look under prototypes.

$1500 for the also very rare Vinyl-clad Jawa.

I'm sorry. I was reading it quickly and when I caught the bit about kids being hurt by firing missiles, I assumed the Fett figure was what you were referring to. I missed the Battlestar bit entirely. My bad.

Another expensive figure was the very rare Yak Face. He never quite caught on and, since his figure release coincided with the boom in popularity of G.I. Joe, few sold. This is one of only four or five figs I need to own all the original SW figures. Too expensive to buy one though.

i was gonna mention yak face too Bossk...
i think thats when Lucas realized that he can make toys of characters who hardly had any screen time whatsoever and that people will buy them....
hell look how much he's worth now... ur telling me that when the new edition figures came out that no one bought the new Yak Face..
lol

he was like the first one on my list...

You know what?!?!

I remember as a kid seeing the figure in a toy shop in another town. This was like 1979 1980 time.
I remember when I saw it that it was one of the little fuckers that I didn't have in my collection.
I remember this so clearly still today.
Man, I wish I bought it.

OH well, there you go!

I've got him, not in his card, still have his card and alot of others, all still in A1 condition, as is all my old SW toys.
Apart from Tall Snaglletooth and the fucking plastic Jawa, I still pretty much have all the figures.

I'm missing Yak Face, tall blue Snaggletooth (damn northeast US exclusives), Luke in Stormtrooper disguise, Han in Carbonite (removable), and the B-Wing Pilot. That's about it for what I'm missing of the originals.

Are all of them carded?

I think at one time I actually had a vinyl-cape Jawa....either that or I'm just attaching my recollections of OB1's to the Jawas.

The missed opportunities I had to buy a ton of those figures carded......4 for $1.00 at Grand Central in 1979! I still remember that and only bought a couple......played with them until their arms went wobbly.

At least you had fun with them. I have a set of the 1995 action figures, and I remember eagerly opening each one as I got it, then setting aside the backing so that my mom could cut out the little character bio (my mom cut a lot neater than I did back then, I was only 10 at that). I used those figures so much, and yet I was really careful with them, so they're all still in great shape, along with their accessories (except for one of Luke's lightsabers, the hilt of which my sister broke...though I did patch it up with Scotch tape microsurgery, so I still have it). I also have the card bios, as well. Other people would look at me and say I should have kept them boxed up, but they're toys, and they did what toys are supposed to do, though nowadays, I wouldn't mind hunting down just a few figures still in their packaging, but just for personal value.

Yeah, I know the 1995 figures are different from the 1977 figures, but the mid-nineties were when I was old enough to have my first Star Wars memories. Kind of sad, especially since my dad had a 1977 C-3PO and a '77 R2 in my family's toybox, and though I still have the 3PO, I think I destroyed poor little R2 when I was two and didn't know any better. To this day, I still curse myself for not having the foresight to spare R2.

I only have three carded figures. The rest are loose. Some are literally loose in terms of limbs. Others are in pretty decent condition. I actually have a perfect condition vinyl cape on an ESB era Vader. I used to have the vinyl caped Jawa (a couple of them). However the capes all tore off and all that's left are capeless Jawas. They look rather pitiful, to be honest. I have one or two with the cloth capes.

I had an opportunity to buy all the POTF 1985 release figures at a Children's Palace toy store in 1988 when it was closing down. They had a bunch of them. Never got around to it.

The weird thing is, one of my repeated dreams is of visiting this toy store I've never been in at all in my life and seeing all these original carded SW figures on the pins right next to the new ones and just buying a ton of them. All regular price as well. I couldn't tell you how many times I've had this dream. Everything about it is the same each time, too. Exterior of the store, location of the toys in the store. Pretty sad, yes. Repressed feelings of guilt for not buying when I could have, I suppose.

My collection is far from complete, and also far from being in good condition, but I've got a couple gems.

- POTF Edition Jabba's Dungeon. The Dungeon was a Sears exclusive. Came with Amanaman, Barada and EV-9D9.
- Ewok Battle Wagon- It was in the cartoon, but the toy itself is not designed like the rest of the cartoon toys. It looks like its from the movie.

For the most part, everything in my collection has something wrong with it:
- On my X-Wing, R2 has a bolt in his head. Something inside broke, and my dad was able to glue it, then reenforce it with a big screw. I've also had 1 wing snap off a couple times, but its been glued too.
- On my Lambda shuttle, one wing no longer wants to stay in place. The internal gear that holds it up must be stripped.
- The wing on my Vader's TIE is hot-glued in place.
- The Falcon is missing the remote (on a string).
- All that remains of my Ewok Glider is the wings.
- A good portion of my figures are missing weapons/staffs/snakes, etc.

My favorite toy, though, is my Han Solo blaster. I still pull it out every once in a while to twirl it around my finger.

I've actually got quite a few weapons. My only problem is IDing which weapon goes with which figure. I can get most of them. But some of the later ones are harder to pin down.

Vehicle and creature wise, I've got a Rancor, Jabba (no playset), and I'm not sure what else.
