Looks like George Lucas wants a cut of the CGI pie. His plans to blend western style animation with anime has been done to death. The last thing animation fans like myself(I love both styles) need is something to cause comparisions between art styles. Personally, I'm not too fond of American/Asian hybreds(the Animatrix, etc.) It always comes off as some no-nothing's take on anime, which is often vastly different from real anime. So overall, I'm not sure this is a good thing.

Interesting, indeed. I don't know if that's the best example, but I get what you mean. Something like Samurai Jack is certainly a hybrid western and eastern though not really CGI. I do like the hybrid style of the CG done by square in the Animatrix and certainly the job they did with Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. Looks amazing to me. And I certainly am a big fan of anime. Actually, Blood is all in CG and is a japanese animation with western influence and that was phenomenal. It can work. That said, Lucas can manage to destroy anything good.

"Blood"? Do you mean Blood the Last Vampire? If so, that wasn't all cgi. While I like cgi films, I prefer traditional methods. Check the trailer on this site out. It's done using old methods, by one person. I'm not big on the cgi/2D hybreds to be sure. As such, I'm not that fond of Studio GONZO.

I wonder if this is how he intends to expand on the Star Wars franchise?

That's exactly what I was thinking. As we all know there are rumors of a Star Wars TV series. Could this be it?

I know it was a mix of painting, cel work, and CGI but they did state at one point that every scene in the movie, 100%, has some CGI on there and was therefore revolutionary. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that's what all the hype was about. BTW, I am refering to Blood: the Last Vampire.

No actually. He is done with Star Wars after he finishes the 30th aniversery versions. It looks he will become a pixar like studio after.

It'd be kinda funny if Lucas went the Pixar route when he's finished Sar Wars, just considering Lucas started Pixar to begin with.

Whoa, you aren't kidding.

Now, what I'd love to see, is Lucas take on the oft neglected art that is Supermarionation! Matt Stone and Trey Parker have recently revived the lost art with their new film Team America: World Police, but what we really need is a genius of the caliber of George Lucas in order to truly realize the potential of the medium

Maybe he can CG out the puppet strings, maybe replace the puppets with CG characters, oh baby, I can feel the magic already

The big deal I heard about it was that it was partially finianced by the US distributor and that it was partially in english and japanese. You want revolutionary, check out Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Personally, I can't stand overuse of CGI(i.e. thing that could be done by hand but wasn't). As such, its hard for me to like a lot of studio GONZO's work(Blue Sub 6 especially,Vandread maybe, since the CGI is rarely in the same scene) Even the celebrated Last EXILE fail greatly in that area. I'm simply not impressed much by CGI, especially when mis-used. It's really jarring at times.

Blood had some gorgeous 2d/3d work in it though, I'm thinking particualrly the subway scene. The movie...ehn...okay, although also SERVERLY truncated. What the hell was with that?!
LucasAnimation has been in the works for YEARS now. They actually opened up the U.S. based part of the division last year, and yes, the idea is to do CGI features...that's what the division is all about. Personally, I'm hoping they finally get the Frankenstein pic greenlit, that ILM was trying so hard to get off the ground. Saw some test footage from it a couple years ago, and it looked pretty damn cool.
Sadly, I don't think SW is done...JEDITV.COM, with a redirect to www.starwars.com just went up a day or so ago. It looks like the TV series rumour is true in some way...god help us all, like we need another neverending Sci-Fi franchise.

Frankly, I think the whole thing about blending Western and Asian styles is more a cover and excuse for sending the jobs overseas instead of paying western wages for the animation work here. It really pisses me off, becuase there are so many talented animators looking for work in NA, in a booming economy, and the work, like every other job, is being shipped overseas because it's cheaper and less regulated.

I heard a disturbing rumour that the script that was being developed for Indy 4 might end up being made as a Young Indy, theatrical release....ewwwwwwww. And no way in hell would I watch an Indy cartoon...the things are serial movies, and need to be done live action, or there's just no point.
Star Wars TV? Nononononononononono...just let it die after next summer. It's been a great thirty year rollercoaster, but it's time to stop. The world didn't need 1 endless, pointless, and incresingly poor quality sci-fi franchises, let alone 2.
