Yes!!!!
This isn't exactly new news, I believe we'd heard that from the beginning.
A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em
Starting from TPM was always a mistake. There will be only one because who needs to see it in 3D?

Here's an idea.
George said he wanted to do experimental cinema.
Do a triple release of TPM SE (2011) in 3D, TPM (1999) in 2D (on the multiplex circuit) and Star Wars (1977) in 2D (for the art house circuit) and use that as public mood barometer.
Doesn't really surprise me. Despite how hard the entertainment industry is pushing 3D, I think the novelty is (once again) wearing off. It happened in the 50's, it happened again in the 80's, and it's happening again now. Seems like the industry has to re-learn this lesson every generation or so.
My thing is, of all the films to get the 3D treatment, it has to be The Phantom Menace? If they're only going to do one film, it should've been Star Wars itself. But then, I obviously don't contain the right gene that gives me Great Wisdom To Decide These Things.
Personally, I'm holding off for Holodeck technology. Porn will never be the same. :-)
I love the last feedback comment... so, they're blackmailing us to watch TPM so that we'll get to see the OT in 3d. Hehe.

It's BS. My guess is that the 3D conversions are all underway and some aside from TPM may already be done. They're just saying that so enough people think, "Well, if I don't see the prequels in 3D then I won't see the original trilogy in 3D, so I have to make sure to see the prequels."
Lucas has been doing this for 15+ years. 1995 - final home video release. 1997 - special edition only in theaters. Get my drift? It's called MARKETING.
Even if not all the movies are released in theaters, they will be released on 3D blu-ray.
Profits from 3D theatrical release and eventual blu-ray double dip will help finance a new trilogy ("episodes 7,8,9"). That's always been my theory. Lucas will produce but hire another director.

The linked story is from June.
I'm sure Lucasfilm will be watching to see how the upcoming 3-D reissue of Kimba The Lion King does at the box office.
Where were you in '77?

Thread merge on aisle six!
A thread merge is probably for the best. I posted a link to the same article in the other one. It really is a shame they're counting on the most critically panned Star Wars film to carry the 3D Mania. I hope that it's good news that we haven't heard any news regarding the other films' cancellation.
Yes once again folks the billionaire to poor to afford an oot restoration, too poor to afford a live action tv series, and now too poor for the 3-D conversions of star wars 1-6. Cry me a freakin river Luca$

Yet there's an easy way he could make a shit load of money, yet he just won't do it.

Because that'd be the last purchase for many people. Lucas keeps people in hopeful suspense while selling them crap they don't want/need. He preserves a larger consumer base by this.

No it wouldn't be, there will always be a better format.
Aw, now that's such a shame.

I would think they'd make Eps II and III a priority, since all they'd have to do is re-render all of the CGI and adjust the depth for all of the green-screened actors accordingly.
The OT, they'd have to do whatever sort of voodoo magick was done to Nightmare Before Christmas (I never saw it).

I'd be happy if they only released TPM and it would fail. At least then we could avoid more changes to the OT.
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Sorry, folks. I posted this story after seeing it posted by Bill Hunt (thedigitalbits.com) yesterday as news. Didn't know it was so dated.

It's very easy to avoid more changes to the OT - don't watch. If we aren't getting the OOT anyway, who cares if he makes more changes?

Yes, it had always been the original plan. I don't know how can people consider it good news, since it would be a great chance for the OT to get a proper SE.
