Hey ricarleite! Do they dub English language films into Portuguese for Brazil, or subtitle them? I'm curious.

Well, the thing is, for non-portuguese speaking movies, on a movie theater, it's almost always subtitled, except when it's a kids movie. The funny thing is, both the Special Edition and The Phantom Menace where released with dubbed versions as well (on few selected theaters), I think it's very obvious why.

On cable, it's about 75% subtitled, on a open network TV station it's almost always dubbed, but you can sometimes swich to the alternate audio channel (SAP) and listen to it on english (thats what I do).

I remember that when The Phantom Menace was released over here, both the "long time ago" and the "episode I" titles where written on portuguese (I belive that was done by Lucasfilm on every foreign release), and I remember people booing this, because they did not want it to be changed, they wanted the original titles in english. On AOTC this was corrected, and it was displayed in english.

This language thing is kinda funny when it comes to star wars characters name. For episode I, there was a character named Panaka, which sounds like "panaca", which is a brazillian slang for "idiot", "jerk". For episode 2, on theatrical release, Dooku and Sifo-Dias were changed to Dookan and Zaifo-Vias because the original names were kinda similar to cuss words in portuguese (when it was release on TV, about 1 or 2 weeks ago, the names were changed back)

And about the "cheap" movies: they show about 20 minutes of ads before the previews (they pay the movie theater for showing the ads, not the distributor), and popcorns and sodas are pretty expensive, so they have their profit there.

We have a similar system with the theatre chain I work for, but thankfully we only have 2 ads running right now (one for the Genie Awards and one for Mazda).

Wow, just when I thought Americans had the corner on screwing people over at the theater with the prices, I then hear your tale there ricarleite, and makes downloading all that more tempting to do for every movie. I wouldn't because I know there are people who need money at those concession stands that work them, but that is about the only reason I go any more, besides the big screen of course.

I go to the movie theater not only because of the big screen and the great sound system, I go because I enjoy going out with my friends, I enjoy the antecipation of standing in the line, waiting to watch a movie I always wanted to see... It's way better than downloading movies. I must confess I do download movies, but only those that are impossible to get over here (like dr strangelove, which was totally unavailable over here until about a year ago, or the mst3k movies/episodes, which are not aired here).

Besides, I never eat popcorn or drink sodas, and I'm always talking/joking during the ads, so...

it's exactly the same (20 min. ads + expensive food) in both Luxembourg and UK

but yeah, watching a movie in a theatre is really an unique experience.

Glad to hear people feel the same way as I do about the theatrical experience.

I'm very much the same way about the moviegoing experience. It just pains me that movie studios don't treat it as such an experience when greenlighting some of the crap that they do.

No kidding; I'm dreading the opening of New York Minute. Who thought putting the Olsen twins, Eugene Levy and Jack Osbourne in the same film was a good idea?

Do they really open Olsen Twins movies on the big screen? I thought they were all DTV?

Until about 5 years ago, since they think they're "grown-up." They would be kind of cute, still not actresses, if they didn't have more movies then the Land Before Time Series. Ashley and Kate 4, 4 1/2, 5, 5 and a little, 5 and some more, ........

The last time the Olsen twins hit the big screen was 9 years ago in the horrendous It Takes Two, co-starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirstie Alley. It was pretty much a retread of the Parent Trap.

None of the girls when I was in high school and college looked anything like the girls today do. It's sickening. In a good way... I suppose.

There'd be too damn many miniBossks running around right now.

No wait, what am I talking about? I'm just having delusions of grandeur. Like any of these girls would ever have anything to do with me.

I think I'd go nuts if I have ever had a daughter running around like that. I'd want to protect her from the 'sickening' world we're all in now...

If I ever had a daughter, when she growed up to be 11, I would give her 500 condoms, and tell her to have all the fun she wants to, but not to sleep with relatives, with criminals, or with the village's fool.
