Lucas listens to us...and ruins things further (Boba Fett)

Seriously. Look at the character of Boba Fett. Originally, not too major a character. But when he became a fan favorite, Lucas inserted him inot the SW SE and added more of him in ROTJ SE. Then, he made a backstory involving him in AOTC. Now, he’s changed Boba’s voice and, in my eyes, ruined the character. I know other people think the backstory made him less cool and the new voice just bugs the hell out of me. On the ROTJ DVD commentary, Lucas even says that if he’d known Boba would be such a fan favorite, he would’ve made a better death for him. Besides that, all he seems to do is go on about how much he would’ve done differently (SE haters, do not listen!)

Now…we know that Lucas does listen to the fans. That recent interview where he said he doesn’t listen to what we have to say is bullshit. He knows tens of thousands of fans want the O-OT on DVD and he doesn’t care. I just thought I’d share this observation…

Am I right about this?

Avery good point. Boba was a fan favorite because he was mysterious, with an unknown past, and was just out-right cool. Now he justs looks as lame as little Anakin.

Actually, this makes a lot of sense. It's kinda funny, because Lucas always claimed never to understand why Boba's character was so popular with the fans.

Judging by the PT, it would appear that this is stil the case.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Heh, a really good point Darth Justin. Gotta love the irony of all that in a way.

George seems to have selective hearing, expanding (and destroying ) Boba Fett character, reducing Jar Jars role in episode 2, but he seems to be deaf when it comes to most popular opinions such as Greedo/Han (without doubt the most unpopular decision he's ever made (twice!) ) and the growing caLLS TO HAVE THE o-oT RELEASED ON dvd .

Maybe he did realise how terrible it is, but he can't change it back now, because he would be called a hypocrite or something.

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. That's a very intersting point Justin.

Be careful what we wish for indeed.

I have my own theory about Boba Fett's popularity:

For one thing, the Boba Fett animation sequence in "The Holiday Special" was the only enjoyable part of the program ... and millions of Star Wars fans tuned-in to that program when it aired. A cubic zirconia resting on a pile of shit is bound to look like the Hope Diamond.

For another thing, the Boba Fett mail-in action figure was released as a teaser for Empire long before the film was out ... I think most kids thought that the character was going to be very important. I know me and my group of Star Wars fans elevated him to a very high, nefarious position without knowing what kind of role he was going to play in the films. He was a bounty hunter Darth Vader. In that, the "imagined" role of Boba Fett was grander than his actual character ... thanks entirely to merchandising.

I kept up with the Expanded Universe up until Phantom Menace, and I appreciated Boba Fett's original origin story far more than what was presented in Attack of the Clones.

Simply put, Boba Fett has the coolest looking costume, second only to Darth Vader. That is why I liked him as a kid.

Hell yes. He was awesome. You know that sweet shot in Empire where you hear Han getting tortured in the background and Lando and Fett have this exchange...brilliant. It's stuff like that that makes me love Empire so much.

To tell you the truth: I always liked the AT-At driver's costume the best ... which was why I also elevated that "action figure" to a more important role in my action figure games.

I think just about every game I played with Star Wars figures as a kid had a better storyline/plot than the prequels.

i personally really like the back-story and history of boba fett and his dad. it's interesting, ironic and just fun.

such a shame that GL had to ruin it by making a movie about it.

shame.

Boba Fett's role in The New Jedi Order is brief but infinitely cooler than his scenes in RotJ. It is too bad Lucas tried to kill him off.

Boba Fett was popular because a character with an unknown past is infinitely more compelling than after we know his backstory. This also works for Darth Vader, Obi-Wan, Yoda and others, each of which are far more interesting in Star Wars, than in the crappy prequels.

That's because, no matter how good the backstory is (and it's pretty bad in the Prequels) it can never match up to each person's imagination. In cases like this, it's better to never open that door.

Good reasons all.

There are many reasons to love Boba Fett but for me it was because he was a mysterious Man With No Name ala Eastwood in Leone's The Dollars Trilogy, he took no guff from Darth Vader and actually talked back to the man in black.

Boba

(I hope these images work) EDIT: They didn't. You'll just have to click them.

The things that made him interesting to me were the very thing sthat were left unsaid by tell-you-twice-Lucas.

Plus he's ubercool looking and (used to be) VERY cool sounding.

His action figure could fly and he had a missile on his back which could spring out and hit you in the eye.

Like much of Star Wars and Empire (ROTJ not so much) he's very lived in. His outfit is dinged up and used, he's a busy man obviously.

His reputation for disintegrating his quarry preceeds him.

He is not a Kiwi and we all know he made it out of the Sarlaac pit.

I really never wanted to know his backstory for sure, and so I still don't.

it's a pity Lucas spent precious screentime developing Boba's character in AotC, when he should have spent the time on character development of the main characters.

Honestly, I don't think Lucas even knows who the "main character" of the Prequels is. It's just a hodge-podge of bullshit wrapped in a shiny CGI package.

Ironically, he did reverse what was, in my opinion, the second worst decision of the SEs -- Luke's wailing at the end of ESB. Dump all you want to on Jabba's CG insertion, it didn't affect plot nearly as badly as Luke willingly falling to his doom, but crying out like a bitch on the way down. Lucas realized this was stupid, and he reverted back to Luke's silent plummet.

So why ignore the Greedo shooting first issue? He didn't want Han to appear cold-blooded? I never got that impression. Han was held at gunpoint, and Greedo announces that he was looking forward to shooting him right now, so boom, Han shoots before Greedo can get off the shot. Any good person who isn't afraid to use a pistol would have the same reaction in the same situation. And they WOULDN'T wait for the other party to hit and hope they'd miss at point-blank range.

I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.
