Lucas and Frazetta

Author

I have this crazy theory that I want to run by some like-minded individuals. Tag, you're it.

This is George Lucas and Frank Frazetta. Notice Lucas's sweater.

There are a bunch of photos of Lucas in that sweater around the time of the Star Wars pre-/production, here's one:

So. When exactly did Lucas visit Frazetta? Before or after Star Wars came out?

If before, was he trying to recruit him for the film? Or maybe for a poster? The Style A poster is certainly reminiscient of Frazetta's iconic poses after all.

It's kind of a longshot, but there's something plausible about it in my mind, even though I've never heard it talked about before.

Lucas is holding a Frazetta print or something in his hand, maybe he was just getting it signed?

Frazetta did do some art for Battlestar Galactica that was used to promote the series, and grace the covers of the early novels.

Where were you in '77?

Yeah, I've been trying to figure out what print it is, but I can't make it out.

Frank Frazetta’s work made such an impact that director George Lucas asked him to do some work on the Star Wars films. Unfortunately retaining rights was equally important to Lucas and he refused to allow Frazetta to keep any of his originals and so Frank turned him down.

George Lucas later claimed that Frazetta's artwork for Buck Rogers was the inspiration for the Star Wars Saga.

Tom Jung's Style A poster is definitely made to resemble Frazetta's work. Don't know if Lucas approached Frazetta to do poster work though.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Darn. I thought this was going to be a flannel conspiracy where after you pointed out George's sweater you then pointed out Frazetta's shirt and postulated from there. =/
