Lucas' Red Tails — Page 3

Cgi cartoon planes dogfighting, bay's awful Pearl Harbor copying star wars, already been done.

Now you have Lucas copying Lucas in what is supposed to be a historical piece.

Instead of models its computer graphics that would not pass muster in a videogame.

If it was a painting no one would have batted an eye, but it's CG and the guys says "look CG!" and acts like he's made some kind of wry observation.

EDIT: On second glace, seriously, IS that a painting?

Lucas the billionaire is obviously too poor for a drew struzan painting, the same as he is too poor to transfer 35mm film like the original star wars trilogy.

Why not crap Photoshop they did it with the star wars 2004 dvd set, and the 2006 .  The art Director at Lucasfilm should seriously be replaced first the blu ray art is horrible for star wars and now this stupid red tails poster.

I don't think that's the point he's making (about CGI).  It is a painting (i think), but it also DEFINATELY looks like the adds you used to see for combat flight sims back in their heyday, which then implies it's just a silver screen video game (which remains yet to be seen, but wouldn't surprise me...).

Hard to get work out of a retired man. I assume Spielberg and Abrams wanted a Struzan poster for Super 8 but he declined. Which is why we ended up with this look alike.

Boycott this because of the star wars blu rays, and clone wars season 3 on DVD/blu ray.

I will rent the clone wars from the library for free so Lucash gets none of my money.

The tv ads started running this week. I don't think anyone involved has a clue how to market this movie. :/

I don't know. Stranger things have happened at the box office.

The ad was so borderline blipvert in it's speed, that I couldn't even discern the prominence of Lucas' name in the credits.

Sometimes trailers are misleading, but this looked kinda cheesy for such a serious subject from WWII.  The dialogue felt like Independence Day, but again this is only a few snippets so I cant assume its total cheese.

The key thing about any film for me:   Is it driven by the story and characters or the action and CGI?  If its just another Michael Bay CGI shitfest with lame characters, then I'll pass.  If they create good characters and tell a good story and the action is secondary, it could be a good movie.

Remember this quote?

Initially, it was directed by Anthony Hemingway, and then George Lucas wanted to change some of the tone of it and decided to direct it himself, so we had a few re-shoots
Lucas' idea of tone nowadays makes me really worry for this movie.

is that seriously going to be the tag-line?  'courage has no color' !?!??!?  I don;t recall seeing that on the posters in my hometown theatre.

if that was in the trailers, people would have been laughing their asses off in every theatre it was shown.

last couple months has been weird for movie box office.  Hugo and TinTin have not been attracting huge crowds.   Maybe this flick will have a shot because people are getting sick and tired of 3D. thats the only thing I can think of.

if this movie cost only $30 million to make,  it could break even.  even that 'mars needs moms' movie and 'battle field earth' made that.

George Lucas Talks Red Tails

One interesting quote from George in there about Star Wars though.

"..it's the same problem i had on Star Wars. And on Star Wars i just broke it down and made it episodes 4, 5 & 6.And i said i can live without the backstory because i don't need to... i never intended to do that. But i was determined to make those three movies because it was one story.."

So the story has changed again then. I guess that all the fans that have constantly beaten upon the OT fans with their" it was always Georges vision to do the prequels but the technology wouldn't allow it.." and that "It was always meant to be a 6 film saga about the story of Anakin Skywalker. You're an idiot if you don't believe that to be true. Why else would the original Star Wars be titled episode 4?..." have just been proved 100% wrong, especially when this has come direct from the "Creators" mouth. ;)

Hugo might seem too European and art housey for American audiences, unfortunately. And people don't associate Martin Scorcese with warm holiday fare, either.

TinTin isn't very well known in the states today. I think the last time I saw the old TinTin cartoon on tv, I was probably six years old! I've read the movie is doing great overseas though.

i read the excerpts but didn't watch the video in that link.  among the many things i can't stand about lucas is he whines about some media conspiracy against him even though he's had more 'interviews' than every other filmmaker in history combined.   and these 'interviews' are nothing more than stunts to give out talking points for all his apologists to parrot.

and this is more of the same cookie-cutter lucasspeak;  'im an independent art house filmaker'; pseudo-intellectual blather about myths, etc, etc.

its all grandstanding nonsense from a guy who infinitely loves to hear himself talk much more than making movies.  When i read crap like 'i realize i maybe taking a risk for black filmmakers because this may hurt them if the movie fails. but if it succeeds, hopefully it'll lead to more opportunities ...' I'm like 'dude, STFU!'.  btw, why isn't the actual director being interviewed?

[rant over]

anyway, to your point regarding the SW saga - im not suprised he said this.  he contradicts himself on a regular basis.  Secret History of Star Wars is full of examples.  To quote vincent bugliosi: 'you want to be a good liar, you gotta have a great memory'.

anyway, so this movie cost $58 million? can't remember where, but I swore I saw the cost was $30-$35 million.  Unless it gets absolutely electrifying reviews and WOM, it may not make much more than that.

Wow Red-Tails is finally coming to the big screen?  If what I read in previous posts is right then, good job lucas, it only took you 23 years!  So with george's involvement does that mean Red-Tails will have a huge action figure and vehicle toy line?  Will I be able to buy Red-Tails towels, underwear, toothbrushes, bed sheets, cereal and toasters as well?

Seriously though, I'd like to read or watch the reaction from the real Tuskegee airmen once they have seen the film.  Not sure how many are still alive.

except for coffee table books and other stuff, won't be merchandising.  whats more likely - and worse - is we'll get more 'interviews' with lucas going out of his way to differentiate himself by saying 'see - look, this movie is coming striaght from the heart, its not about the money'  and more pathetic straw-man nonsense about how 'hollywood would never do this, hollywood would try to exploit this for profit'.

but if this thing cost $58 million, maybe there will be merchandise - or TPM 3D will make up any shortfalls.

as far as the real Tuskegee airmen - im sure they will like it since the movie appears to be nothing more than a tribute to all their accomplishments.   But i'll laugh if they complain that the movie has a lot of action but not much of a story - or if it turns out all the characters and events are fictionalized.

BTW Hoth, I noticed you did not call him 'Luca$' (I still remember when the TFN moderators threaten to shut down the basher sanctuary unless we stopped calling him that.) - are you becoming a kinder, gentler hoth-nudist for 2012?  ;P

Bingo!  Remember how George rejected a Frank Darabont-penned script for Indy IV because of its tone?  Red Tails is sounding more and more like Indy IV all the time.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

this inkl has another interview with lucas/cast/crew

http://www.tennessean.com/usatoday/article/52378382

sounds like it was screened for the original airmen (and the article makes note that not many are still with us) and they liked it.

I am a little bothered that lucas and co. go on and on about the original tuskegee airman and how this is all a tribute, its more important than money, etc etc.   and I don't believe a lot of the behind-the-scenes anecdotes, especially those involving lucas' attempt to reach out to other studios.

Lucas is up-front saying its a corny jingoistic movie.  so things are already in motion to defend it against charges that its superficial, shallow and romanticized.  he mentions the 'old-time' war movies - so there's your homage to 'older, simpler movies from hollywood golden age'  that the apologists love.  Nowadays, war movies - any drama based on a true story for that matter - have become much more nuanced and complex beyond lucas' capabilities.  He says that he wanted the movie to be more about achievements than racism - which is fine, but the trailers I saw had every racism cliche in the book.

Its interesting to note that Rick Mccallum was not featured in this interview.
