Lucas' Red Tails — Page 2

It will be interesting to see if Peter Jackson's remake of The Dam Busters uses real models over CGI. The original 1955 film influenced the Death Star attack.

Just to be able to work on something that came out of George Lucas’ mind was quite a horror.

You don't need a crystal ball. You know it's going to suck based on the PT and crystal skull. The success of a film is based on who makes it.

Go away.

The CG might not look so good, but I have high hopes for this movie.

Jeez, pessimistic much?

How much involvement from the actual still living pilots and members of these teams has been mentioned?

I think only that they were up at the ranch being interviewed in the early 2000s, beyond that, not sure. I wonder if the "inspired by" true events thing means that it ended up being more fictionalized then they originally intended. It looks decent, it's interesting how the reaction to the CGI varies so much from person to person. We seem to be at the point where you have people who expect it to look utterly real, as if it's just an event that was photographed, and others who recognize it's not real but still find it appealing.

Tone is something Lucas doesn't usually do well.

So his 'tone shift' reshoots don't fill me with optimism.

I wish he had tried this film himself before doing the PT.

Knowing that he couldn't drop CGI animals treading in poo into such a project might have reminded him of the power of restraint.

I still maintain that the WWI battle sequences (and the Box Set Documentaries) for Young Indiana Jones are the best things associated with him since 1981, largely because he really couldn't get away with allowing that to get screwed up and his heart, I felt was genuinely in that.

With George getting on in years, it could have been all his Color Purple/Private Ryan moments bundled into one project.

As it is now his reshoots this far down the line might now be seen as him meddling with what has now become someone else's work.

If it gets a Pearl Harbor type response, calls for a Director's Cut will probably get the same response that our calls for the OUT have.

Speaking of Young Indy I wish we could get that show in its original format and order, unedited.

Are any good movies ever released in January? I always thought it was a dumping ground.

Those were my first thoughts exactly.

It reminds me a lot of his go-off on Kershner - "you're ruining my movie" - and how he then re-edited Empire.  A cut that I believe was later scrapped because it didn't work.  I may be wrong.

Is this on for a January release? That is really, really bad news. December is the Oscar-month, when studios push their best material out to be eligible for the Academy Awards a few months later, when the films will be freshest in voters minds. January is then the dumping season, when studios quietly get rid of all those embarassing films that they regret they made in the first place. Once in a while there is a good movie in January, of course. But usually a January release date means the studio has not much confidence in you.

He can't drop CGI animals walking in poo, and it's not a movie to appeal to little kids, but he could still do the aerial combat equivalents of a truck going off a cliff and landing on a tree a la Crystal Skull.

I know we'll probably never again get the type of actual flight footage like was done in Battle of Britain, so I don't expect it to have that level of realism.  But the CGI sequences in the trailer do seem to have more of a stylized video game bang zoom kinda feel to them than maybe I'd prefer.  Neat to see Me262 jets in the scenes, but I don't think Mustangs would have turn and burn type dogfights with them.  I'm not an expert though, just trying to remember stuff I saw on that Dogfights series on the History Channel, which btw I thought was fascinating.

Other thing from the trailer is it seems like they're laying it on a little thick with the melodrama.  Still, if it is a good tribute to the pilots and what they did, I'll probably be there when it opens.

Oh yeah, I need to see the Young Indiana Jones series and have it in my netflix queue.  I'll have to play close attention to the WWI stuff.

Are the box set documentaries on netflix too because they are really good?

It looks like they are there, at least it matches the disc totals they show on Amazon (12 discs season 1, 9 discs season 2, 10 discs season 3) so I have plenty to look forward to.
