Lucas Even Screws Up Jabba's Character

Author
Time
Hi all:

This is an issue I've been wanting to discuss with other true blue SW fans. As you may know by now, I REALLY hate the new Star Wars trilogy. If you're offended by that, I'm sorry. I know that many discussions have been started among fans where one person says, "The new movies suck," and another fan says, "No they don't," and the first one says, "Yes, they do," and back and forth it goes.

What we need is a real discussion on WHY they suck. There's plenty of reasons (thousands, I'm sure), but many of those can be disputed. For example, if you say, "The new movies have crappy storylines," someone else surely will reply back with, "No, I like the stories!" What we need is a discussion of that which is indisputable. For example, the ways in which the new movies create continuity errors or plot holes.

Today I posted my argument on how TPM creates huge plot holes and continuity errors in Jabba the Hutt's character. Forgive me if this sounds like a shameless plug for my website (which, in part, it is), but I've posted my argument on this topic on my site for everyone to view. It's awfully long, so I don't want to repost it here. You can view it at:

Those arguements suck. Not the movies. The Phantom Menace is a good movie and Attack of the Clones is the best movie. Everything in Attack of the Clones is absolutly perfect.

I agree with Jimbo except for that part of AOTC being perfect.

They are both far from perfect, but good movies.

So, from now on, every time you toss some "new" nonargument onto that blog, you'll feel the need to announce it here in a brand new thread such as this one? Ye gods...

George Lucas is either fucking around with us or he has lost the plot completely. First off he keeps banging on about how he wants these movies to all gel for future generations, and then he goes and reveals what Jabba looks like in the very first episode! That was the beauty of the original movies that we didn't see this mysterious character until the final episode. Then he put the totally pointless scene with Jabba and Han in Ep4 SE. This totally ruins the build-up to the introduction of the character in the final episode. So much for thinking ahead for future audiences there! And to make matters worse if the rumors are to be believed he is about to expose the deformed emporers face in Ep5 on the new DVD release in september. Again this ruins the mystery behind who or what the emporer really is and what he looks like. Again he's really planning for future audiences there isn't he? I think he must have surrounded himself with a bunch of idiots who agree with every stupid idea and change he comes up with. Having said that these latest changes could be just misinformation put into the public domain to have a bit of a laugh at the publics expense. I'm sure he's deleting all images of the emporer and Jabba from all the movies so we and FUTURE GENERATIONS can revel in the surprise when we first see Ep6! (Yeah Right )

they suck????
how???
those are probably the most fleshed out arguments ive ever seen... sure you may not agree with them but those beat the shit out of every one of your stupid arguments you make jimbo...
like u just said... "AOTC is absolutly perfect." how bout u explain how??
you come on here making fun of other people because why... they have a point of view which may be correct... or maybe ur just too stupid to understand what he's saying...

jimbo you really are a disgrace to these forums i find... not only do you not even take into consideration others opinions but you have the nerve to tell them "they suck"
truth is you suck.... the prequels suck and most definatly Lucas sucks...
i cant wait for that geezer to pass on because all he does is ruin shit in this world...

jimbo read over his arguments again and come up with one argument that sucks and why...
if you cant then you are as stupid as you seem... or are!

Erich great post!
although i didnt agree with everything you said you indeed had some deep meanings behind the characters...
very nice!

Cool Hand:

Thanks for the kudos. I try hard to think through my arguments as much as I can before posting. I understand many people around here don't and won't agree with me, but my point is, I just want to open the discussion and exchange ideas. I am very opinionated, I know, and I hope everyone is cool with that.

Jimbo, come on! I understand you might think my points suck--that's fine. How about a few reasons why you think they suck, though? Again, the point of a message board is to exchange ideas and make new friends. How about exchanging a few ideas?

SammyTheBull, I'm sorry that my "non-issue" offends you, but the last time I checked, this is a free, open forum. You might think it's a "non-issue," but others might not. Really, who or what am I hurting by posting here? It's not like bandwidth or forum space is limited and I'm eating it up frivolously. If you don't like my posts or my blog, skip over them!

well ill participate in a discussion here...

the only reason i could see Jabba meeting with Han himself is to maybe strike some fear into him...

have you seen the movie Scarface? i bring this up because when Tony Montana starts to hit it big he has his hired goons who do things for him which u have mentioned in your blog... but when he goes to confront his friend who ended up betraying Tony and hired someone to kill him.... he goes with his goons to pay him a visit personally... (i sure hope you remember the part in the movie or have seen the movie... he comes in with his arm in a sling... in the room with the palm trees and sunset painted walls)

he still has his goons with him but he shows up as well... maybe to put a shit scare into the guy...

thats the only other reason why i could that happening...
what do you think?

I read your article this morning and loved it, Erich. I hadn't thought about it before, but it makes perfect sense. Here we see an example of Lucas trying to keep us from thinking. Oh, and don't listen to Jimbo; he claims he's trying to keep things balanced, but most of us feel like he only causes trouble.

Oh, yeah, AOTC is perfect. Just listen to this line that smacks of perfection:
--'You're not all powerful.'
--[Sulking like a six-year-old] Well I should be...someday, I'll be the most powerful Jedi ever!'

I don't mind the arguements about Jabba. I do mind him believing that Attack of the Clones is lacking story. It has one of the most complex, intellegent storylines on cinema. Its story has refferences to the fall of Rome, Shackspeare (don't know how its spelt), and a little Tolkien. It has all the same dark feel and brilliance of The Empire Strikes Back. It goes further with its kick ass action. Seeing Yoda fight is worth the price of admission.

After reading this thread and Erich's novel about Jabba and the 'real world', all I have to say is "OH BROTHER!" I think I am giving up on this site.

jimbo if you think the story is one of the most complex, intellegent storylines on cinema then that says a lot about what you know about movies..
and thats not a good thing...

I always thought that the biggest problem with the prequals was that there was too much story and convoluted threads of backstory, and not enough emphasis on the characters to keep it interesting, TRADE BLOCKADES, POLITICAL NEGOTIATIONS AND WRANGLINGS, MIDICHLORIANS, SEPERATISTS all add up to a case of too much information, it wasn't until the last haf hour of AOTC that the prequal trilogy finally kicks into gear, everything up until that point just seems like a prolonged lead-up.

I think somewhere along the line George got so wrapped up in the whole backstory of the star wars universe that he forgot the basics of good movie-making/story-telling, and that is to "Keep it Simple, Stupid!' , look at the original trilogy, it's a very simple story of good vs evil, with a small band of really interesting characters put through a series of challenging and interesting situations and most of all it was FUN!!!

After all the interviews with GL in the 80's and 90's where he talks about being inspired by Joseph Campbell's Power of the Myth and 'The hero's Journey' It seems that once he got around to writing the prequals, he was more heavily influenced by CNN and Parliament question-time.

Thing is, don't Hutts live to be about 300 years or something??
If thats the case, I don't see the problem here!!!

I mean I see your point, but like whoever it was who posted up there somewhere, maybe Jabba wanted to scare Solo himself....See maybe Solo and Jabba were quite close really......had some sort of respect for each other....so Jabba was a little upset that Solo fucked him over (even though not intentionally) so Jabba thought a little one on one might help sort the problems out!!

Good points but in regards to the Battle of Naboo..it is...'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away'...not the near future as you said...so the Battle droids are from the old school of fighting....Think about it..It was the Nemodians (yes their mouths did look shit) who had them, so I geuss those stupid cowards programed them the wrong way..Thats what I think anyway...

But yeah, 1 & 2 aren't the best movies, and they sure as heck don't compare to the originals, but I like 'em, even if some parts do make me cringe beyond all belief.....

another good point HotRod...
never thought of it like that..
because when that scene was originally filmed with the human actor he seemed rather understanding when talking to Solo..
he even put his arm around him at one point as their talking...

Erich having read your article it does raise some intresting points about the character of Jabba. I does not make any sense that a crime lord would be doing his own dirty work when he has workers to do the job for him. While I do not think that prequel trilogy sucks, I do however think it is flawed and this is shown mostly in TPM. The whole ending of TPM was a mess as it kept on flipping to several different stories going on a the same time. Had it only concentrated on one of these it would have probably improved the film quite a bit.

Erich, good post. Everyone doesn't have to agree with it. I saw Farenheit 9/11 and I don't agree with all of it, but it was interesting to hear an opposing viewpoint. Isn't that the point of message boards and further, living in a free country. Opposing viewpoints can be heard and among intelligent minds considered. Simple and sweeping bashing like that of Jimbo only hurts the contributions of members, especially new ones. And to another new member Buddy-x-wing, I have to say awesome post. That is so true about prequals. They have so much story to fill and points to cover it loses magic and much character development and plot suffers. Again great post, mentioning Campbell's mythos that GL so heavily relied upon to give his movies "soul" or "force" if you will. Jimbo, again, GL is not faultless, the movies are not faultless and you certainly are not faultless. Leave people alone that come with new ideas and post them intelligently.

I've noticed a lot of people say that if this were different about TPM or that was different about TPM, it would have been a better film.

When asked how I would have made TPM better, I answer that I would take the Ross Perot approach. In the 1992 presidential debate, when asked how he would improve the IRS and US tax system, he said, "Start over with a clean sheet of paper." That's what the PT needs--to be started all over with a clean sheet of paper, a good science fiction script writer, a proven film director, new actors, and a new vision.

Erich,

in the artical on your website, say that in the Radio version Jabba met with Han in the hanger bay. This is not true. In the Radio version Han speaks with a man named Heater who works for Jabba.

Nice post, and nice rants. I even agree with most of them.

Problem is, people who sent you the (funny) hatemail, are the black and white doormats (as you so nicely described some people) that will hang onto the poor movies. It's just like popular bands. You make one very good song, perhaps even a second and a third(the OT ) and when the fans are hooked they could probably make a fart song with the same tune and it would, according to the fans, be awesome.

And perhaps its just they hang on to the SW church so much, saying that the PT sucks would feel like blasphemy. I must say I feel a bit like this. Ofcourse it's also a matter of taste. I mean, I really enjoy watching B flicks. While alot of people can't stand the bad acting, the poor costumes and the shabby decors. I also think there are two types of fans the so-called true fans and the movie-fans.

For starters, if you don't know the OT (shame on you) the PT are fairly nice movies for the movie-fans. There's action, romance, intrigue and comic relief.
If you DO know the OT, the true-fans don't want the romance and really don't want the Jar Jar Binks crap.

I must say I'm in the middle here, I like quite some scenes in the movies, but as stated above ... for all I care Jar Jar Binks was crushed by that tank in the beginning of the movie. Or if he was to be in the rest of the movie, ritually sacrificed by the Emperor for being an annoying pain in the @ss.

For instance, you have to agree with me that the Yoda fighting scene rocked. And the Clone Army Factory was impressive.
But the romance and picknick scenes we're ... not ... Star Warry ... if you get my point.

And I'll also be standing in line to see it ... because ... maybe ... it'll be good afterall.

There ... back to work again
