I swear, the level to which LFL has pimped out the SW brand name since the SE's never ceases to amaze me. (Or sicken me... one or the other.)

[By the way, this was about the LFL/Apprentice crossover. I thought there was a link, but someone must have removed it.]

What are you talking about? Merchandising?

Star Wars has always been about the merchandising my man - are you old enough to remember C3PO's?

I agree that I am sick and tired of endless waves of...stuff. I mean, what kind of world do we live in where a Yoda costume for a dog is available, but not a set of the original trilogy on DVD. And I swear I'm not making that dog costume thing up. It's scary...in a cute kind of way.

Now, if there was a pirate or ninja costume for a dog I'd be all over that like Star Jones on a butter croissant.

Mmmmm.... C3POs. I half expected them to remarket the things since the prequel releases. I probably would have bought a couple of boxes too.

No, I'm not talking about merchandising. This is not merchandising. This is cross promotional bullshit with something completely and totally unrelated to Star Wars. They were pulling this same kind of bounce back crap with The OC back when Sith was about to open. It is this kind of whoring out of the SW name that makes me fear the forthcoming television show. I can already see the potential for self parody. But at this point, Lucas just totally and completely does not give a rat's ass about the brand name anymore. He cares about the films (in his own sick way). But when it comes to slapping the SW name on things that have absolutely f*** all to do with SW, he leaves that up to Jim Ward and his flock of sheep. I have to wonder if Charles Lippincott ever had the idea to stick George in a cameo on Charlie's Angels to drum up pub for A New Hope? The sad truth is that back in the day a film lived or died by the strength of its content. Now it's all about how many kids you can get to go to the theater on opening weekend by making them think that your film is "cool" because it got some cross promotion on TRL.

True. I can see it now: Emperor Trump and his apprentice Darth Lucas. Lucas eventually overthrows Trump and takes over his show and now teaches his apprentices the fine art of cash cow milking.

You're shitting me, right? I'm not checking the validity of your report because I refuse to type that website's name into my browser.

I get what JackLucas is saying though. It's been a sad reality in Hollywood for years now. Ever since movie studios were bought up by mega-corporations which also owned TV station, magazines and what have you.

A few years ago I was a subscriber to Entertainment Weekly (I know, I know, I've since atoned) and I noticed that when Scooby-Doo came out there was no review of it. Every place else I looked I saw 'Scooby-Doo sucks,' or 'Prinze Jr. is a dick in a kerchief,' etc. But not in EW. Opening weekend passes, new issue arrives. Scooby-Doo #1 at box office, EW reviews it at a C+. Hmm...so I checks it out, and sure enough EW is owned by Time-Warner and Scobby-Doo is distributed by Warner. So I cancelled my subscription. I always knew that companies cross-promoted and played this game, but I never really payed attention to it until then. It was disgusting to thnk that the average moviegoer maybe wouldn't have plunked down their hard earned money to see that steaming pile of shit had they seen the review. But they couldn't as it was printed after opening weekend and it made back it's budget. It's definately a possibility.

Now, I never thought this would spread to Star Wars. I knew that Star Wars was all about Chewie bath mats and Jar-Jar underwear (turn 'em inside out!) but to see Lucas squirming on the OC (which I am a fan of, but certainly not that episode) was laughable and saddening as a Star Wars fan. Yeah, the trailer was cool, but fuck! Did they really need to do that? Star Wars has built in box office, what the shit was Fox thinking?

Now this Apprentice crap is happening to tie-in with 'Sith' on DVD. C'mon! Do they really think that the average fans of the OC and the Aprentice are going to rush out to buy into the Star Wars machine? I accuse Fox and LFL of not knowing their market and demographic. We're a fickle bunch, Star Wars fans. They know they have their hands in our pockets and it's a gold mine for them - it's time we put a stop to it. No more 'Lava Vaders' (seriously, WTF?) no more bubble-bath, no more M&M's, no more at all!

Give me movies and maybe Star Wars beer and I'm good to go.

Your post about EW made me consider this, maybe it's the conspirer in me, but: What if TheForce.Net has secret ties with Lucasfilm Ltd where Lucasfilm can spy on fans and see what the fans are interested in and will buy? It does seem strange when TF.N constantly advertises strange items like that so happily. Hmm...

Naw, Adam - I don't really think there's a connection. However, LFL does watch all of the major Star Wars sites on the net (more about protecting intellectual property than anything else) and does gauge the fan climate. None too well if you asked me based on their questionable decisions.

As far as TF.N goes, they are guilty of being perpetual 'Yes-Men.' They are the Rick McCallum's of Cyberspace, if you will. They never post anything negative about Star Wars, they always shamelessly plug themselves, they seldom credit their sources, they post news items days after everyone has already heard, they are a bunch of sychophant suck-up elitest snobs who pride themselves on being the 'premiere' Star Wars fansite. I also am aware that there has been falling outs between them and other site owners due to their attitude and policies.

No I am not shitting you!,

I honestly struggle to find things other than the O-O-T and the Holiday Special that have not been merchandised.

I can only think of certain "adult" things eg Condoms which even they would not merchandise ever...

My sibs and I are on this. Just started last night. As I said in my earlier post, there is a big difference between merchandising and whoring. And I want my Darth Vader bowling ball!

Dont......

Get..............

Me................................

...............STARTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are very close ties between TF.N and LFL. Trust me. I don't have the mental patience or time to go into it (wasted TOO much time on those assclowns in the past....TOO much time), but a quick search of the net and you will dig up a treasure trove of information on the history of TF.N. Too bad TheFarce.net is offline. T and those guys made me laugh my ass off all the time.

Hee hee - I bought 2 boxes of the 'Clone Wars' cereal for EPII so I could get that ridiculous helmet thing.

The helmet didn't fit and I got the shits from the cereal. Of course I ate 2 boxes in one sitting, so I deserved the shits. The helmet didn't fit on account of my big head. I didn't deserve that. Damn parents and their big head genes.

I got the Episode III cereal as well. It wasn't too bad. Actually, on first reading, I thought you said you liked C3POs. I just realized that there's only a one letter difference between NASTY and TASTY.

Wow....

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I thought you might find this interesting this was taken from here and posted by someone on a "Bashers" thread on theforce.net and was taken down with this comment "No flaming! You have been warned twice, If you dont like this much here, remember you dont have to post here!"

then repeated on a seperate thread about possible Lucasfilm and theforce.net ties with a reply of "No Flaming" then a post "This is site is a privately owned company I dont think there is any conspiracy, I dont like the direction this one this is travelling through, there are ways to express distaste with openly flaming the site you're posting on

Yes, I posted it there, as TheCassidy's words well-represented how I felt about TFN. And, of course, the bastards took it down because they, just like all large ruling bodies, don't want their inhabitants to start thinking or make any negaitve remarks.

If someone comes here and reads it and reposts it, fine, but I would expect better of someone on this forum.
