Lord of the Rings 4k HDR Remaster

Hi y’all, in lieu of my hobbit fanedit which incorperates 48fps and HDR, I wanted to start a side project that would take up a bit less time. After watching a 35mm scan in HDR of the theatrical cut and the video by Jesse Tribble, I started work on making the extended version of Fellowship’s 4k bluray back to its theatrical color roots. While others on this site have matched the extended either back to the dvd, made the 2011 bluray more neutral instead of green, or matching the colors to a fixed up version to the 2011 extended 35mm print this seeks to make the first version of the extended version back to the theatrical color timing as would have been seen on a print in 2002. The first step was mixing the grain structure of the 2011 bluray to the 4k HDR disc. Some shots are taking straight from the 2011 bluray where appropriate to keep the original framing intact, then matching the 4k HDR color to that shot. Next was doing a light pass on the theatrical print to remove some green from the shadows, and matching shots from that print around the non extended scenes of the 2011 extended 35mm print. Which I would then match to the new layered footage. As a bonus, the colors of the 35mm matched would be on a luminosity layer over the HDR to compensate for Jackson’s HDR grade while retaining the print color. Thus we would get extended shots that match the color timing of theatrical colors. The final step (and a big reason why the hobbit fanedit is on hiatus) was matching some of the sound timing in the atmos track back to the theatrical effects (ie Gandalf getting flung to the roof of Orthanc), which I finally found a workaround to mix atmos material. I am almost done with disc one in terms of color grading, only a few things left to be done. I am looking at achieving retaining Jackson’s HDR contrast while bringing back the original colors to give the fans the 4k remaster we should’ve gotten.

Sounds like the 4K release they should have made in the first place! Very exciting, and I’m looking forward to seeing it in action.

I have finished up the shot by shot of P1, but to be honest, I think I will be going back after P2 is finished with a new grouping of shot matches that I like to call lighting setup by lighting setup which is subjectively based on color, contrast, and lighting angles having a similar feel, something I feel shot by shot isn’t capturing fully. But the results for the most part I think have turned out fantastic. I did add some film grain, which I will probably use for select shots that are absent of grain even on the 2011 bluray. Anywho, pm me for the resilio key for this beta! It includes dolby vision 😃
