Hi, trying to find the 35MM scans of these three films if anyone knows if scans of them even exist. Thanks.

No, I don’t believe so the best release is the Blu-Ray disc. Other than say the amount of DNR on Totoro these haven’t been botched like Castle of Cagliostro was. Even the newer grain managed Nausicaa isn’t awful, and it does look better than the untouched original which does look more like a film print with the amount of grain present.

I wonder if they decide to do new 4K UHD discs now that Boy and the Heron is on 4K.

I think Kiki’s Delivery Service English audio track needs a redo at least, the one on the Gkids is awful. Somehow the original laserdisc, VHS and DVD weren’t messed up sound wise. And I’m not talking about changing the American dub songs or cutting most of Phil Hartman’s lines which I also hate.

I’m quite happy with the Blu-rays for the most part, but the only one they’ve redone with a fresh scan was Nausicaa. By this point all the others are ancient transfers. There are only some if I had the power I would see restored, Like My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Kiki probably doesn’t need it though, Totoro does it looks worse than the version that used to air on HDTV which had more film grain. Which I don’t have a capture of, wish I did.

Do any of the pre digital Ghibli still exist on film like in their original 35mm print, whether a Japanese print or foreign version? Like does Warriors of the Wind exist as a full 35mm feature and not just a VHS. We don’t even have a scan of the trailer in HD.

Hey Skywalker,
Thanks for responding. I’m thinking of just getting the Shout!Factory discs for these 3 films. I’m gonna assume they look/sound good. They have the original Japanese audio and English dubs so guess I’ll go with those. Is it the Shout!Factory release of Nausicaa that is the fresh scan you mentioned? Still, it would be cool if there were 35MM scans out there of these films. I’ve been collecting 35MM scans and I am having such a good time with them. The sound on them is what gets me though. Big and loud and so clear and don’t even mind the background hiss when they have it.

Best,

The Gkids is the new scan from the negative with the grain management and better color definition, yes. and Its a larger encode. Its master was from the Japanese Miyazaki box. Shout Factory is indeed the publisher of that. Their discs are for the most part more affordable than Disney ever was if you don’t go for the steelbooks.
