I know this isn't a Laserdisc, but it might help some .....

The Criterion DVD Edition of Armageddon contains color bars.

Cheers

Yes, there are many DVDs that contain the THX Optimizer too.

In the context of analogue capture, these may be useful for a general check of your capture device's performance and calibration, but results may be skewed by the analogue conversion in your DVD player.

Don't forget the Pioneer reference discs.

GGV1069 for NTSC (still available from Pioneer)

GGV1007 for PAL

They have by far the most pure test signals, far better quality than the VE disc, and are the smaller size disc to allow adjustments to be made to the LD player while the disc is in.

You need these if you want to calibrate your LD player correctly using the player's service manual.

Alien 3

Watch the credits to the end.  Right after they're done you get ...

1.)  Surround Sound Calibration Test

2.)  Color Bars w/ Test Tone

That's not the actual image on the disc! It looks like that is the composite video voltage (IRE) trace from a set of color bars when displayed on an oscilloscope.

With Alien 3, State Fair, and Visions of Light all containing a sound check + color bars with tone after the movie, it seems to be a common feature among mid-late '90s FOX discs.

Here is another with the same patterns: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/06720/8901-85/Mighty-Morphin-Power-Rangers:-The-Movie-%281995%29

I thought that's what he meant; the color bars on that disc run into a waveform monitor to show the technical quality.

Just let me know how you would like them. There is a huge selection of test patterns.

Mainly interested in anything showing comb filter performance & dot crawl (e.g. colour bars), and resolution (e.g. multiburst).

Does the JSC have SMPTE color bars?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I've put the Pioneer Test disc captures in the other thread.

I'll check the end of the JSC tonight and see.

Thanks.

Question: what's the difference between all the Pioneer Reference discs shown on this page? (And how come the only one in stock is more than twice the price of all the others? :-/ )

The HE010 one that is in stock at that link is actually a demo disc with some test signals at the end. It contains hi quality video material:

  1. Milford Sound & Great Barrier Reef
  2. Dai-ichi Hotel Tokyo Bay
  3. Japan Sketch
  4. Restaurant Gallery
  5. Hi-Visual Image
  6. Sylvanian Families
  7. Canadian
  8. Test Signals

The pioneer reference disc GGV1069 is still available from Pioneer USA and is about $30 from memory. I bought one just a month or two ago.

I'll redo them using the composite out into the BMI, and also from the X9 Svideo ouptut for comparison.

The pioneer discs are mainly to use alongside a service manual. With them you can tune up your player to minimise crosstalk, ringing, dropouts etc. by using the patterns with a scope (or a software scope) and get your player working as well as it can.

I phoned the Pioneer service parts line to enquire about the PAL reference disc. They couldn't find it (but did advise me not to lose the remote for my D925 as a replacement costs £120!)
