List of Blu-ray with altered aspect ratios — Page 2

what would be nice would be to see a collection of James Cameron films utilizing their altered Home Video AR as they were shot with super35 and have a lot of picture info when opened up

True Lies (1.33:1)

Avatar (would love to see the 2.40:1 Ratio that I saw at the cinema)

Not sure about Titanic though as that was both ratios for the 3D Blu-ray

Started a Google doc with some friends of the various aspect ratios / dimensions of films and what the director's preferred AR/dimension is.

If anyone has any suggestions/proof of director's preference, let me know.

That's really cool. I'm wondering what the point of all the open matte films at the bottom of the list is? There were tons and tons of films (way more than this list) released open matte on DVD home-video, but they were clearly composed for widescreen.

Also, the filmed in (*) doesn't seem to make much sense. For some films (like On the Waterfront) it marks the aspect ratio the film was composed for, but on others (like BTTF and the films at the bottom) is marks the tallest aspect ratio available from the filming format regardless if the film was ever meant to be seen that way.

For the whole Kubrick thing (The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut) I believe the consensus is that he composed for widescreen, but he approved open Matte transfers for CRT home video because he didn't like black bars (he was a strange guy).

It's a very nice list. I had no idea that Star Trek 6 used the Univisium aspect for the DVD.

Yeah, I was going back and forth on the open matte stuff. The point of the list theoretically is to chart the different releases and what the director prefers. The asterisks are a work in progress as well.

I know that prior to the Blu-ray transfer, there was a 2:1 theatrical cut transfer that ran on HDTV.

At least it was opened up, unlike Vittorio Storaro going senile and cropping his own 2.35:1 compositions to fit his later preferred Univisium ratio. Thank Heaven Apocalypse Now finally got a 2.35 release (though he still was able to force Criterion to use 1.9:1 for The Last Emperor).

I don't have a 4:3 copy but I do have ST VI on widescreen VHS and the aspect ratio on that is 2:1, the first DVD release had 2.35:1 and the SE DVD was altered by Meyer to 1.85:1.

Film4 have recently shown the theatrical cut in 2.35:1 IIRC. Next time they show it, I'll confirm for certain.

I had an idea to compile three versions of Top Gun onto a BD-25 (in Standard Definition)

1.33:1, 2.00:1 ( from the original R1 DVD) and the 2.35:1 version (from the remastered DVD)

Maybe that's an idea to preserve the multi aspect ratio versions.

It seems to be the same thing with the variable aspect MI Ghost Protocol. Lost to time....
