Let's talk blu-ray burning...

 (Edited)

I never thought a blu-ray burner was something I'd ever get, but with Harmy's v2.5 release coming out soon, I'm considering getting one.

So I just wanted to see if there are any pioneers here who have taken this step, and if they have any advice.  What's a good burner to get, and what features should I look for?  I have a laptop, so I'm guessing an external unit would be best?

It's primary purpose would probably be to just burn Harmy's Despecialized Editions for friends and family.

What's the best brand of disc?  Verbatim seems to be the gold standard for DVD, but is that also true for blu-ray?

Is the technology for burning blu-rays at home still in its infancy and it's not worth upgrading quite yet?  Are prices still coming down?

Feel free to add any ideas, tips, tricks, etc. re: blu-ray burning.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

I took the plunge because of the many Blu Ray projects in the works on this forum.  I went with an internal Sony Optiarc BD-5300S. I've burned many single layer verbatim BD-Rs with no errors with IMGBurn.  I have also tried Memorex BD-R 25s and my drive won't even recognize them.  I'm burning my first dual layer verbatim BD-R next week and I'm a little worried to make a $14 coaster with it. Hopefully IMGBurn won't let me down.  I always burn at 2x speed.

I am quite happy with my DIGISTOR external Blu-ray drive (the actual drive component is Panasonic):

I would also highly recommend DIGISTOR recordable media (which is manufactured by CMC Magnetics - a quality Taiwanese manufacturer, that produces "Made in Taiwan" Verbatim recordable DVD and BD discs):

http://www.digistor.com/Blu-ray-Recordable-Media

The BEST thing about DIGISTOR products is the company.  They are based in Campbell, California and stand by their products 110%.  Contact them about ANY coasters you may get, they will replace and ship them for FREE.

Receintly, I had intermittent issues burning their BD50 that turned south really bad (7 for 7 coasters trying to burn one folder of data to disc) in Toast 11…they extensively tested and have RESOLVED the issue completely (the problem, as it turned out, was in Toast 11) with ZERO coasters since, for more on that:

Hope that helps! ;)

p.s.  The ACTUAL drive that I purchased is the DIGISTOR™ Personal Archive Blu-ray Burner for PC and Mac (Slot Load) - DIG-78112 and I tend to buy the 50GB BD-R Printable media.

I have no luck with CMC media, I have tried a heck of a lot of different brands, and these days only use Japanese made Verbatim. I get them straight from Japan via ebay and they never once have given me any grief. Dual layer (50GB) ones work a treat as well.

I have an old LG BD burner, it is so old it also reads HD-DVD! but it has never let me down with verbatim media.

What’s a safe speed to burn BD-R 25gb or 50gb discs at? What is the best disc media to use?

I burn mine at 2x because I’m paranoid. 😃. I want to minimize the chance of coaster. Especially with the more pricey 50GB discs.

Thanks for the info. I too am paranoid, when it comes to CD-Rs & DVD-Rs. I just thought the BD burning tech have resolved the coaster problem.
How long does a full 50gb BD-R DL take to burn? Is it worth to select the “Verify Disc” option once BD has been burned?

I think a full double layer takes me something like 40-50 minutes, if I recall correctly.

I would definitely recommend verifying the disc, though that will take pretty much as long as the burning process.

Thanks Towne for the info. I’ll have to try that, once I get some BD DL discs.

Does anyone have any Canadian websites that sell spindles of 25 & 50gb BDR discs at a reasonable price?

Thank you for this post! I’m trying to create a full despecialized edition box set and I’ve been hung up on the best device to order to burn the Blu-rays. This is a wealth of info.

Damnit! These 25/50gb BD-R discs are expensive everywhere. I should’ve bought a few spindles when I originally got my burner years ago.
