Leia & R2-D2?

Author

I've always had the impression that C-3PO and R2-D2 were one step above "stow-aways" on the Tantive IV.  When we are introduced to them, they are wandering the hallways without much direction or purpose (as far as I can tell).  It seems to me that R2 happens to walk down the wrong/right corridor at the wrong/right time and runs into Leia who is desperate for a place to stash the DS plans.

Given the prequels- either as they exist or how they could exist... and given that the Skywalker and Organa families most likely have history with this pair of droids... Does this change your interpretation of those events?  Are the droids specifically hers?  3PO seems pretty ignorant of "The Princess" when Luke and Ben are watching the holo.

I always thought R2 was more important to Leia, even before the PT.  But I'm not sure I had good reason to think that way.  Just a feeling.

The Radio Drama has them taken on board for special purposes, but I don't remember exactly why.

But doesn't 3PO say "there will be no escape for the Princess this time" at the very begining of the movie?  It seems inconsistant!

He's playing dumb, I never figured out why people didn't get that.

Isn't he ordered to 'forget' if asked directly in the Radio Drama?

I always figured 3PO was lying about his knowledge (or lack thereof) about the princess in the same way R2 lied about the restraining bolt interfering with the message, followed by "what message?" after the bolt's removal...

Based on what's given in the original film I guess I always assumed that the droids belonged to the captain of the Tantive IV ("our last master was Capt. Antilles...") but that Leia had sent for them (well, R2 anyway.  That scene gives the impression that R2 knows exactly where he's going & 3PO is just tagging along).  Perhaps R2 had a reputation for being a feisty droid that could get the job done where others failed?

I listened to the first radio drama but i can't remember much about the events that take place before the beginning of the film.

As I remember it (and it was a long time a go...etc) R2 is sent out on the hull of the Tantive under the guise of doing repairs but is in fact receiving the transmission of the Death Star plans and Threepio is monitoring the download.

When the Star Destroyer twigs what's going on Leia orders Threepio to pretend to be from Barcelona and "know nothing", mistake the word hammer for hamster and retreat to their hidden base in Torquay.

And, like all good computers, he executes his programming until it is countermanded... which it never is?

Answering the question, yeah it changes things, but I don't think the droids need to be specifically hers.  3PO and R2 as part of the entourage of the Princess works for me, although I think it could have easily been one of the other R2 units on board to get the plans and blast himself into Tatooine's orbit.

They work in the labor pool of the Tantive and are picked to be used to receive the transmission of Death Star plans while appearing to make repairs to the hull. They get caught by the Devastator, the Tantive flees and that's where the film starts.

R2 is instructed by Antilles to listen to Leia's voice for recognition and follow only her orders. That's why he, for the most part, ignores 3PO and "babbles on about his mission" and continues on it whenever he gets a chance. He's under her direct orders, not some sort of loyalty.
