Latest issue of SW Insider (#98). Some interesting stuff...

I know that a lot of you here don't subscribe to SWI anymore (and I can't say I blame you), but there are some interesting tidbits in the latest issue, and you may want to pick it up from the newsstand.

There's an interesting interview with John Mollo (ANH costume designer) and he revealed a lot of things I didn't know, like the fact that Luke's yellow jacket from the rebel ceremony was an off-the-rack ski jacket and the same jacket (aside from the color) as the one that Ponda Baba wore in the cantina.

The prop gun that Luke has holstered at his leg during the rebel ceremony scene is the exact same gun Leia used in the scene where she is captured by the stormtroopers at the start of the film.

Leia's necklace from the rebel ceremony was also an "off the rack" piece bought at a jewelry store called Lapponia (it was designed by a Finnish artist named Bjorn Weckstrom).

There's a bunch of other trivial bits like that, plus some photos I'd never seen before with Mark Hamill in his Tunisia costume hanging out with Derek Lyons (who played a couple of small parts in ANH). There's also an interview with Lyons, as well as interviews with some other bit-players from ANH.

You see, this is the sort of occasion where you run down to your local B&L/newstand/where ever you buy this sort of thing and pay the $2.95 (are they still $2.95? Surely not, seems pretty cheap, $4.95 maybe?) for a copy. No need to subscribe. It sure helps having friends like Mielr who still subscribe to it to let you know when there is something worthwhile though. Thanks Mielr!

You're very welcome! This is actually the first issue of SWI in a long while that I haven't just quickly flipped through and put away.....

...and they're $5.99 now!

I could tell luke's jacket was the same as walrus man's but being an off the rack ski jacket is an interesting piece of trivia. Wasn't the original prop on ebay a few years back for $200,000. OT.com resident prop expert might be able to tell us more on that

See the below pic in regards to Luke/Leia's gun

On a side note looking through my pictures looking for the above picture I was wondering if anymore promo pictures of Luke in that costume exist (ceremonial costume sans jacket) besides this one:

edit: the reason I ask is it's my favourite costume, thanks.

Just to add to the trivia from the same magazine...the ceremonial costume Luke wears has the same style of pants (or trousers as us UKers would say) Han would use in ESB - if you look carefully, they have the 'Corellian Bloodstripe' in yellow as Han would have for the Bespin sequence (I think it's this sequence).

Wow, at reading the content of that issue of Insider, I could feel a tiny spark of excitment welling up with in me, especially at things like "Peek at Prequel Yoda" and "Episode One casting announced" then reality clicked in and my brain told whatever part of my body it is that created the tiny spark of excitment, "Hey you idiot! We have already seen Episode One and the other two prequels and they sucked and prequel Yoda was one of the worst parts about them" and thus the spark was snuffed. My brain can be a real jerk sometimes.

As you can see it is indeed in a private collection although I am unsure as to the sale price for this piece.I do know that Luke's tatooine trousers (Levi 501's believe it or not) were sold a few years back for the bargain price of $5,000. Luke Ceremony Jacket

That would be really cool to have a ski jacket exactly like that one. Since it was an off the rack thing, surely plenty of them are hanging in obscure corners of thrift stores and unwanted in the back of peoples' closets.

You would think so! Though, I've never seen one anywhere. Mr. Mollo said it was an "Alpine" ski jacket, "or something like that" so I guess that means it may or may not be an Alpine jacket.

I'm wondering about the authenticity of that Luke jacket (especially now knowing that it was commercially sold). Where was it bought/sold? I didn't know that Lucas allowed any authentic costume pieces to be sold to private collectors (?).

Hmm, that is an interesting thought, what country was this thing purchased in?

It's my favorite Luke costume too! I don't have any additional full-length pics, but here are a few I've collected over the years:
This one I downloaded from an eBay auction several years ago:
http://imgcash2.imageshack.us/Himg132/scaled.php?server=132&filename=lukecloseuptrimmedsc7.jpg&xsize=640&ysize=480

This one is from the book "Empire Building" (from a rehearsal, I guess):
http://imgcash1.imageshack.us/Himg520/scaled.php?server=520&filename=lukeempirebuildingwz8.jpg&xsize=640&ysize=480

In '97 I bought a copy of "Disney Adventures" kid's magazine just to get this one (LOL). It's similar to the B&W one you posted, but a slightly different pose (sorry about the glare). This one was featured with a G. Lucas interview, and he was asked: "Do you plan to bring the final trilogy -episodes 7, 8 and 9- to the big screen?" His response was: "Ask me again after I complete episodes 1, 2 and 3 in the year 2003!"

This one is from the SW Insider issue you posted above:

On another side note, an ad like this for www.coolwatersprods.com was also featured in issue #98, promoting a private signing with Mark Hamill. It's $149.99 to $169.99 per signature:

Well oddly enough there is more from ANH in private collections than most of the films as there was essentially no security. They just didnt think it would be that important to keep it or that they would need any of it again.Costumes, helmets, lightsabers all chucked in a bin out the back of Elstree or taken home by the crew.To my understanding this jacket was sold in the US and has very solid provenance.Actually on this topic a friend of mine recently bought the trousers worn by Cushing as Tarkin in ANH.Prices now are much, much higher as the profile of the original prop hobby has been raised and it is now known how much money is to be made from it but years ago it wasn't as widely recognised and things went pretty cheap.
Lucas didn't actively start building the archive and putting all the stuff in it until ROTJ so there is actually comparatively little in the LFL archive from ANH and ESB.

Wow! I've NEVER seen those before! Thanks! Where did you find those?

Those poses remind me a lot of my favorite poster- the style "D" for the '78 re-release:

Except for showing Luke the birth certificate!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Yesterday I googled "Luke Ceremonial Jacket" out of interest due to this thread and the fact the jacket was once sold commercially.

http://www.padawansguide.com/

This website came up and if you scroll down about halfway on that page you'll see the pictures. I saved them and rehosted them to not leech their bandwidth.

On that site you posted, above the promo picture of Luke in his black shirt with Leia at his side the guy wrote the caption "I find this image interesting - Luke is inexplicable wearing Han's pants from Empire..."

I guess he doesn't realize they were Luke's pants from the end of Star Wars before they were Han's pants from Empire. LOL, these sentences probably sound funny for people from the UK. I guess you are use to hearing the American use of the word though.

I think he meant "inexplicably". And yeah, I don't know why he didn't get that Han's empire pants were just based off the ones Luke wore in ANH (maybe he was trying to be funny?)

Haha, I didn't even notice that.

No, it didn't seem like he was trying to be funny. He probably just didn't notice that the promo shot was from before Empire Strikes Back came out. If I didn't stop and think about it for a bit, I probably wouldn't have even noticed that the clothes he was wearing were from the end ceremony sans the jacket. I would figure it out eventually, but without the jacket it is not as recongnizable.

Thanks for those.  I always enjoy rare SW pics.  I'll add these to the collection.

Are you a member of the starwarsarchives forum?

If not there are tonne of photos like this over there and well worth checking out. The ones I posted are just specific to one particular costume.
