Nice to see Jonathan Meades back with a new series.

Meades On France is more of the usual so if you have watched one of his shows and not enjoyed his dry wit and his unabashed confrontational delivery you won't enjoy this one but if you have seen him do his thing before and come away with more than started with you shall not be disappointed.

It would also serve as a good introduction to Meadeless minds.

I have had the misfortune of being exposed to The Andromeda Strain.

Not the Michael Crichton book or the Robert Wise film but the 2008 Miniseries.

Symptoms include nausea, lethargy and circulatory problems caused by high cheese content.

I also have a sore head from plot induced face/palm percussive injuries.

I hope Ridley and Tony Scott put whatever money they made from this cactastrope to good use as I for one would be ashamed to have crimped off these inches.

Just finished the first season of Sherlock. Amazing. Extraordinary, quite extraordinary.

I disliked Guy Ritchie's "take" on Holmes, now I despise it. This is Sherlock Holmes for a new era. I plan to re-watch season 1 this week with some friends so they can experience it for themselves. Cannot wait!

In recent years I have often felt that with more and more ridiculous campy movies flooding the market and being well loved by the majority of the population, it seems that tv shows have become the place for fresh ideas and bold steps in storytelling.

The contrast between the Moffat and the Guy Richie Sherlocks is the perfect example of this.

I agree 100%.

Aside from Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, I've never been a fan of Guy Ritchie, and now I feel his version of Sherlock Holmes is downright insulting.

I was continually amazed by how much better the writing, casting, and tone of this series is compared to the big budget adaptation. You know, the only compromise I was willing to make before was in thinking, "Well, I guess this slo-mo explosive action-fest is the only way to get most people to watch Sherlock Holmes anymore. That's better than him fading from the public consciousness entirely, I suppose." Now I know differently. Sherlock is irreverent without being insulting, exciting without being pandering, complex without being alienating - basically it's all of the right ways to appeal to 21st century audiences without sacrificing quality, and intelligence, and the heart and soul of what makes Holmes and Watson the immortal figures they are. I really think anyone could watch this series and love it.

I find that version of Moriarty every bit as disappointing as Simm's incarnation of The Master.

Now if you want a better version of both look no further than Giancarlo Esposito's masterly performance in Breaking Bad (how does that show keep getting better?).

Both characters should be stone cold evil, their insanity should be shown by rationalising the unforgivable.

They could hire and use someone like Simm and Andrew Scott (as seen on TV), such characters are fun to watch but in the centre of the web, like the centre of a storm there should be a mind that is more differently sane that utterly potty.

My Moriarty is Eric Porter, my Master is Derek Jacobi with a dash of Delgado for flare.

Stealing the Mona Lisa and selling perfect copies, handing out lethal plastic spitting daffodils for free to passers by makes chilling sense if you think about it in that 'special way' that makes for good stories but not the best politician or employer.

I can see why this Moriarty is not for some, but I like him. The way I see it, he's still young, still immature. And he's even more of a show-off genius than Holmes is. A psychopathic whizz-kid. Like I said, I get why people don't like it, but it works for me.

What are you, a masochist?

I've started watching Homeland. I fear that they'll try keep it going for years and it will all fall apart but at this early stage it's very entertaining.

Centers on Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody, who returns home eight years after going missing in Iraq, and Carrie Mathison, a driven (and possibly unstable) CIA officer who suspects he might be plotting an attack on America.

I've also started watching Game of Thrones but I'm less excited about that. It's kind of a mix of rather bland moments and gratuitous scenes of sex / violence.

I have plans to watch Sherlock but not just yet. I might wait a bit and watch them all in one go since there aren't many episodes yet.

Oh I have. 13 episodes I can understand. 7 episodes, I can get behind. But 3 is crazy short. Of course, he's also writing Who, or at least leading the writers.

 

Granted, each episode is as long as a feature-length film, so it's more like six 45-minute episodes.

Don't do that to yourself, span them out and enjoy it longer. Treat it more like a series of movies than a TV show, each one has a self contained story.

Exactly. Each episode is 90 minutes, so you really have the equivalent of six feature-length films, or 9 hours of television. You'd be in good company if you did watch them all in one go. A 9-hour Sherlock marathon sounds awesome.

The UK version of Being Human is back...

It's funny that they mention Rentaghost in the first episode because when that show started it was a rather fun kids show which dealt with serious and even dark issues.

Consider this a spoiler alert.

When two of the three main cast members suddenly and permanently waved goodbye offscreen, the programme descended into the extremely childish pantomime it is currently remembered as (with some affection admittedly but nostalgia can be a bit of a slapper).

I'll keep giving it a go for old time's sake but it was a very poor opening episode on so many levels.

Has anyone seen the US version (I hear it's crap)?
