Batman - Watching Spider-Man got me in the mood to watch another superhero movie with Michael Keaton. I haven’t seen this one in at least 10 years now, and man, I didn’t realize how much it’s aged. I rewatched Superman last year, and while that came out 10 years earlier, it feels timeless. This, on the other hand, feels very much a product of the 80s, the attitudes, the structure, Knox, so on. It’s very flawed, but on the other hand it really feels like the product of someone’s imagination, a movie. The production design is excellent, and I can’t go a day without quoting Jack Nicholson’s Joker at least once. This is one I can go back to again and again.

It was 1989, so I don’t know that I’d say it’s very much a product of the 80s, which makes it sound very different than a product of the late 80s. I think it’s very much a product of Tim Burton more than the time period.

Oh?

That’s easily the best scene in the entire film.

Yeah, but it’s totally a product of its time.

But some more than others. I once again point to how Superman, although made 10 years earlier, ends up being much more timeless.

I’m glad it won Best Picture over Boyhood.

Is it just me who thought Birdman was a weak movie aside from the great performances and cinematography? Wasn’t bad by any measure but just not on the level of another flick from that year like Whiplash.

birdman wasn’t weak, but it wasn’t amazing (as a story). it was good. it was just basically crack for film industry people.

Yeah, but it’s totally a product of its time.

It’s more a product of the late 80’s than the 80’s, which is an important distinction. But it’s more a product of Tim Burton than anything else.

It’s common on the internet for people to pretend that Boyhood is a bad movie and complain about it even though they haven’t seen it because a couple of homeless youtube critics didn’t like it. I’m not saying that this is Handman’s position, because he seems reasonable enough, but that’s a common position in a lot of internet circles.

How dare you say that. Didn’t you know it took 12 years to make?

THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

I mean, you may not be wrong, but you can’t tell me that Superman doesn’t ooze the seventies at some moments as well.

I don’t even think Boyhood was that much better than Birdman, I just think Birdman shouldn’t have won.

I’m not complaining about it being bad. I’m joking about the pretention that someone wasting 12 years to shoot a movie inherently makes it good, which was a joke among people who actually didn’t like it after watching (can you tell I’m an RLM fan?). I haven’t seen it and I have no interest in it beyond mild curiousity.

EDIT: Also the RLM group (if you weren’t referring to them sorry for misunderstanding) is far from a bunch of homeless youtube critics. At least they’ve actually made some movies. I don’t know if they’re good though because I haven’t gotten around to watching them.

I’ve been watching RLM since before you finished elementary school. I just find their shittiest and most unfunny and irrelevant meme obnoxious because it’s overused and not funny. It isn’t a joke among people who actually didn’t like it after watching, it’s a joke told by people who haven’t seen the move but saw RLM tell the joke, like you.

Because they definitely didn’t use that joke again after the initial review? Oh wait, they did. It’s a joke that they made, and occasionally it pops up again. That’s generally how inside jokes with friends work. Of course fans who enjoy the joke continue to make it when relevant in some way. I don’t see how it’s obnoxious.

And I don’t think the fact that I’m younger than you or that you’ve watched their material for a longer time than me is relevant to this conversation.

And even longer to watch! BOOM!

(Note: I am on my phone at work and can’t be bothered to check if anyone else has made that joke already)

I watched both when they were in theaters. I enjoyed both, but expected Boyhood to swamp all the awards, so rooted for Birdman because I felt it was the underdog and more entertaining. Boyhood was an experience, but one I wouldn’t really want to revisit.

Fair enough. I guess what I’m trying to say is Batman feels like a movie of its time rather than a Batman movie, while Superman feels more faithful to the character. Superman is the first thing I’d point to if someone wanted me to explain the character, while Batman isn’t. It’s still a solid movie and I really enjoy it to this day.
