You mean did I jump from the gun shots? Many times. I think there were two that genuinely caught me off guard and made me jump. The others I KNEW they were coming, but they were such loud, sharp cracks that they STILL made me jump. It was such a tense movie.

LMAO

There’s no use in anyone trying to buy a nice sound system rig because the only way to experience this film properly is in IMAX. I might see it again just because of this fact.

How many neck twitches did you do? It got me three times.

I did a lot and I haven’t even seen it yet. Neck twitches and rapid tapping on my collarbone are my go-to nervous tics.

Then seeing his film would be an act of masochism. The last 25 or so minutes are going to destroy you.

Guess I’ll have to go see Valerian instead 😛

(Which I actually do kinda want to see, despite all the bad things I’ve heard about it)

Considering the things I’ve heard I would just watch Dunkirk with a neck brace. You won’t leave unscathed, but you will survive.

I felt the same way when I watched it last year.

I almost didn’t give it a chance. Whatever else I could have done at 2am this morning wouldn’t have been half as satisfying.

“Willow Creek” (2013)

Found footage again. The first half is great, a Blair Witch style slow build but it soon becomes clear that this film’s restraint is its biggest fault. Not much happens at all until the last few seconds!

The two leads are likeable and the whole idea is something that could work well. But it’s just a bit dull.

The standout scene is a five minute single take inside a tent which starts with an awkward marriage proposal and ends with (we assume) Bigfoot stomping around outside. It’s all played off the character’s reactions to the sounds outside and it’s brilliant. Shame the rest of the film wasn’t up to the same standard.

I give it 2 unfriendly bearded yokels out of 5

(Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed it, so make of that what you will.)

I scoffed at this at first, then read the year again.
I pretty much agree. Might give it a 7/10.

If only Patricia Tallman’s Barbara was in the original NOTLD. Then we’d have the absolutely best version of this film possible.

Out of curiosity, what would you give the original true grit? I’ve only seen it. It was “pretty good.” But from what I’ve heard the 2010 film isn’t so much a remake of it as it is a new and more faithful take on the original novel.

As someone who’s read the novel, this is absolutely right. I thought the original was okay but the new one was pretty damn good.

I gave the '69 film the same rating.

I haven’t read the novel, BTW.

I liked the John Wayne one except the girl. But the girl was kinda the main character so a mixed reception is the best it could get from me.

Hailee Steinfeld is fantastic in the 2010 one.

I agree. The problem is that they basically made her character be in her early 20s when she was written to be about 14. The story doesn’t work the same way when you change that aspect of her character. Plus the actress in the 2010 film was excellent.

People keep suggesting the new Apes films to me, (I did see the first one with a group) and I have to keep reminding them I’m old school POTA. Some have no idea there was an entire series of films and two tv show spinoffs in the 60’s and 70’s.

1990? Wow - time has flown. Am off to watch this again - only seems a couple of years ago since saw it at the cinema, though remember seeing in the mid-90’s in the UK… too many zombie films to remember 😃

They’re certainly out there but the Ancient Astronaut Theory was essentially gutted in that Documentary. There are still some oddities here and there, but most of what Erich Von Daniken and his lot claim is no more based in reality than Scientology.

I thought Von Daniken had been debunked back in the 80’s even?

The way I see it, von Daniken was debunked before he was ever published.

His book was a best seller in the '70’s and a documentary was made based on it. Which begat a whole slew of imitations. I ate that stuff up as a kid, but now simply enjoy how these cheesy things manipulate facts and make the rest up. I even spoofed them back in my college days.
All the Shick-Sunn Classics Pictures documentaries, (which covered everything from Noah’s Ark, the Bermuda Triangle, and Lincoln conspiracies) don’t seem to have a legit DVD release.

Debunking anything? No thanks.

Most conspiracy theorists won’t be deterred by debunking. People like Alex Jones and 9/11 truthers will be deluded forever most likely.

War For the Planet of the Apes

This was pretty damn satisfying of an end to the trilogy! It had heavy stakes and a lot of emotion. It’s between this and the “Rise” for which one is my favorite (though they are all great in my opinion). Only complaint is that I thought they got VERY lazy with the storytelling toward the very end of the films climactic third act.
