Goldeneye...in DTS. Now I really want to find that DTS Laserdisc just so it can completely dominate.

I was just thinking of watching GoldenEye recently.  Have heard good things about the DTS laserdisc, but never heard it for myself.

I have two dvd versions, the special edition release and the ultimate edition box sets that came out a few years ago.  The 'ultimate' version is actually nothing of the kind, because they screwed up the transfer by cropping the image too far and rendering it too dark, and the remixed audio has rather less LFE strength than the original, even though the sound quality is somewhat improved.  In both picture and sound it is simultaneously better and worse because of these things.  Overall I'll just stick with the older version; hopefully when they get around to doing the Bluray they'll re-do the transfer and go back to the original mix.

Harry potter and the part 7 part 1.

took a bit of a while to get going but did have some rather cool moments - I loved the animated segment.

The Man with the Golden Gun. Not the best, but I don't know if it quite qualifies as bad. There were some serious campy moments, but it was nice seeing Bond somewhat competent (compared to Live and Let Die, where he seemed to fall into every trap even remotely possible.)

aka Harry Potter and the shit gets real.

In hindsight they probably could have cut down part 7 part 1 to about half a movie, So it'll be interesting to see how much is or isn't crammed into part 2.

Blood into wine. Documentary about wine making - starring Maynard James Keenan, and a bunch of people you've never heard of, oh, and Milla Jovovich.

It's a mix of serious interviews and sheer jack-assery. the serious stuff is quite good, though.

I watched the UE and noticed that the audio seemed a bit off. Glad to know I'm not the only one. I actually like some of the aesthetics of the new version (Darker colors, tighter framing) but don't think they are the original intent. The film plays better than I remember, but still not as good as it should have been. Also, the soundtrack really shows how Serra's score is undermixed.

Hey! Bond springs every trap in LALD. The Moore portrayal in both LALD and TMWTGG is a strong, rough, and devious eyebrow raiser. Neither film is bad and they certainly have their moments.

Watched GoldenEye today.

Was extremely impressed with the sound design of the original 5.1 mix.  In some places they used old and somewhat lo-fi sound elements, and a lot of the bass is of the one-note kind, but it is put together so well that it hardly matters.  A lot of 5.1 mixes, including the Star Wars special editions, rely on 'flashiness' and really call attention to themselves in a distracting and bad way, but GoldenEye is definitely one of the better ones I've heard.  The sound field is very natural and immersive at all times, during explosive action scenes and quieter moments alike.

Later on I put in the ultimate edition dvd to compare a few scenes, which confirmed my earlier recollections.  While the remix does eliminate some distortion evident in certain effects in the original, the LFE volume in most cases is only about half as loud, causing many effects to seem subdued and quiet in comparison.  I definitely recommend watching the older dvd version because of this!

I am big fan of Hammer Productions. Seen movie you already mentioned and first two of their Dracula and Frankenstein films.

GoldenEye is originally 5.1 channel feature.

It makes fun of Harrison Ford movies and has Leslie Nielson in it.  I love that movie.

A tv channel here just aired "Dracula dead and loving it". It's not exactly a "last movie seen" cause I only caught a few scenes, as I had to go out, but even with these scenes I don't see what's so bad about this movie. I mean, people always talk trash about this particular movie: I get it, if we compare it with Brooks' previous works, Young Frankenstein (lots of Wilder input in that one, I consider it more his movie as a matter of fact), Blazing Saddles, it won't stand a comparison. But actually, I saw some really nice photography, scenes, lots of matte paintings (something filmmakers today have forsaken) , nice special effects, nice music, and the few scenes I saw followed to a tee 1931's Dracula with Bela Lugosi, so it was a nice remainder, kinda like a tribute to the old classic. It makes me wanna see it in its entirety, but first I'm certainly gonna see "Airplane", as I only saw it once, and now that I can, imma see it in english!

I might be doing a reworking of that film as a side project of my main Dracula project.

Sadly most of the jokes are pretty rubbish.

Finally got around to watching The Ice Storm, two nights ago seeing as with the weather here hitting -17c it seemed appropriate.

It's a very uncomfortable watch.

On the surface it's struck from a similar mould as Magnolia, Crash and even Donnie Darko semi gnostic cinema of linked but distinct tableaux with half hidden or full on symbols woven in.

However I found myself feeling a distinct sense of unease and discomfort watching the film similar to watching a horror film or a wild life programme with lots of gore.

There is no gore in the film but the characters are really vile and the situations are a bit like watching a really nasty bit of fake torture.

V: The Original Mini-Series.

I don't know if someone watching this for the first time today could even get through it, but I can't judge because I have such fond memories from watching it as a kid.  It's an awesome piece of 80's sci-fi cheese.

Now I need to watch The Final Battle so I can see the delicious birth payoff again.  A defining moment from my youth - I swore that day never to have sex with a lizard again...

I fixed it for you.  Nothing worse than carefully setting up a good "Mom" joke only to have it screwed up.

I just took the scenic route to the same punch line.

All my friends hated that movie.  I thought it was dry, boring and poorly acted, but I loved the core idea.  Don't know if I could ever watch it again, either.

2010.

I liked it, and I never really liked 2001 all that much. I liked how they went back and made sense of the first film - and recapped it in a matter of minutes.

Dave Bowman's ghost creeped me out a little, though.
