Sing Street - 9/10

Wow. This movie is a lot of fun. I’ve heard a lot of praise from natives of Ireland saying how accurate its depiction of 1980’s Ireland, but being an American millennial, I can’t relate. What I can relate to is interesting characters and some damn good music. I highly recommend it.

I’m so happy you were able to see this! It is one of my favorites of 2016. Really uplifting film.

Rings - 2/10

Holy shit this movie was hysterical. But it’s a horror movie, so I have to dock a few points.

Have you seen the original Japanese Ringu, and the first American version The Ring ?

All I’ve seen is the first American version but I thought it was quite good. I figured the sequels would be trash.

The Ring 2 was not bad. I want to check out the remake, Rings. The concept expands from just a simple VHS, but now it includes Youtube and Social Media. That alone makes it creepier than the original American version. I’ll probably check it out in the future.

Any horror movie which revolves around contemporary communications technology automatically disinterests me.

Agreed, particularly if it involves smart phones or the internet.

Isn’t that the point of horror movies in a way? To play up the dangers or controversy of a contemporary issue in a kind of heavy-handed moralistic way?

The problem is that it’s almost always handled poorly when it comes to horror movies about the internet. Halloween Resurrection is a perfect example and overall horror’s incorporation of the internet hasn’t gotten much better since.

I see. I can’t really argue that point any further because I’ve only seen like three horror movies in my lifetime, so I will defer to your judgement.

I can’t recall a single movie using the internet in an effective way. Maybe Chef, or Frank, but they used it in a subdued way and it wasn’t the main focus.

The Social Network?

I will say the internet is inherently uncinematic, so in most cases it’s not worth the effort.

I did see a pretty great short film once that was all about it, though. Will have to look it up, can’t remember the title.

The Social Network isn’t a film I actively try to remember having watched, but it’s probably a good example.

Just finished watching Niagara, a 1953 Technicolor film noir with Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten. Sounds great, but was pretty average and formulaic, despite the beautiful imagery and decent spectacle.

I watched both Wayne’s World films on TV. They’re both good, but I prefer the second one, as it takes more advantage of the fourth wall breaking and general silliness that populates the universe. I’d give them both a seven out of ten.

John Wick

I know, I’m late the party, but here I am. The story was just deep enough for me to care, while having smooth-shot action that’s been lacking for years now.

The second one also has Ralph Brown. I used to have his speech about getting Ozzy brown M&M’s memorized.

One of the stupidest horror movies that I’ve see, that uses Social Media is ‘Unfriended’ (2015).
Don’t waste your time at all with that tripe. It was extremely boring, and I was even falling asleep. A bunch of whinny teens talking to each other on different Social Media platforms. The premise sounded interesting, but the delivery was awful.

I have a friend who would actually defend that movie.
