The Peanuts Movie (2015)

When they first announced this film and that it was going to be CG I was immensely worried that they were going to lose not only the aesthetic but the heart of what Peanuts is.

Thankfully, my concerns were not realized. The new hybrid look adds a new dimension to Shulz designs while staying true to their spirit. Similarly, the gang remains true to their core and weren’t changed for the sake modernization. They remain the same timeless characters we’ve always cherished.

It turned out to be not only a great film, but a genuine Peanuts one to boot.

“SPECTRE” 04/10
Visually it was stunning, but the rest was just uninspired. This entry marks another low point in the series for me.

2001: A space odyssey.
Liked it. alot. almost loved. everything about it worked, its only flaw being that it sometimes got carried away with itself. the extended sequences of no dialogue carried by music, while they did work and were very enjoyable, were at times alittle (and i do mean a little) excessive. The minutes on end of blank screen were a bit much tho, although I don’t know that I’d remove them. I give it 8 passive aggressive remarks made by\to a computer out of 10.

I actually always read the wikipedia page on a movie before watching so I knew this existed, I don’t think I would like to see it.

Are you sure? The version I saw was definitely not 2 hours and 40 minutes long. It was 2 hours and 20 something odd minutes.

I mean you saw the roadshow version with entrance music, intermission, and exit music. Nobody has seen the longer cut since 1968, except maybe the guys who found the footage in the Warner/MGM vault a few years back.

Keeping my fingers crossed the Kubrick estate consents to letting that out for the 50th anniversary in 2018.

Haven’t posted since September! Wow, I’m really bad at this. Quick thoughts.

The Martian (2015) - Exciting, funny, and very well done. Missing some emotion, but a thrilling ride, nevertheless. B+

The Walk (2015) - Wonky and weird at the start, breathtaking at the end. Biggest issue is unnecessary voice over. Biggest strength is eye-popping visuals. Not quite as good as Man on Wire, but a different and worthwhile experience. B+

Sicario (2015) - Very intense. A sadly honest take on the war on drugs. B+

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) - Shockingly dull. Some fun moments, but not enough. What the hell happened? C+

Shadow of a Doubt (1943) - One of Hitchcock’s best. What took me so long to watch this? A

Steve Jobs (2015) - Finely crafted bit of cinematic clockwork. A-

Room (2015) - A total gut-punch of a film. Powerfully made. Worth seeing. A-

Bridge of Spies (2015) - Why don’t they make movies like this anymore? Thank god for Spielberg. A

Entertainment (2015) - Almost interesting. But not. D

Spectre (2015) - Don’t get the hate on this one. As entertaining as any other film in the series. Glad to see Craig finally do classic Bond. Very weak third act, however. B+

Spotlight (2015) - Surprisingly engrossing considering its potentially boring subject matter. Thankfully unsensationalized. Great work from all involved. A

Legend (2015) - Tom Hardy delivers (x2), but the story does not. Wished they focused more on the twins relationship instead of the cliche romantic interest. B-

Creed (2015) - The Rocky sequel you’ve been waiting 39 years for. Real and really emotional. Basically a retelling of the original, but told in such a compelling and new way that you don’t even remotely care. Try to watch this and not get pumped. A-

The Good Dinosaur (2015) - Huge disappointment by Pixar standards. Story is basic at best. Visuals are amazing. Tries to be a tearjerker but fails. I cried more during Creed. C+

The Big Short (2015) - Purposefully messy. Hard to get used to, but pretty smart when you think about it. Watch this and get angry. A-

In the Heart of the Sea (2015) - Sort of exciting, but not nearly as much as it should be. Ultimately, you never really care about any of the characters. C+

Marnie (1964) - A weird Hitch flick, but a good one. Kind of cheesy at times.B+

That’s what I was wondering when I saw the third film.

Don Verdean (2015)

From the husband and wife team that brought you Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, and Gentlemen Broncos. I’ve been a fan of this team since Napoleon and have enjoyed all of their films to date. However, sadly I think Don Verdean was a bit of a misfire. I love a bit of dry humor but this film has taken it to an entirely new level that I didn’t know was possible. The humor was so dry I’d go so far as to call it brittle.

That’s not to say the film is without any laughs. It has its moments but sadly not quite enough of them. Having some familiarity with the communities and types of figures this film gently pokes fun at, I appreciated the care that was taken. Almost all of the characters are sincere in their beliefs and intentions if not a bit dim and gullible.

A decent effort that somewhat misses the mark.

Last movie I saw recently was Fight Club. I knew the big spoiler after a certain point since there’s a modern TV drama that borrows heavily from it. Still, I really liked it!

The Woman in Black- Loved it. Had a great, chilly atmosphere and no Gore or profanity. Classy yet also pretty disturbing. 85 out of 100 points to Griffendore.
