The Verdict.   great movie.   another great performance from Paul Newman.

Funny Games.

I knew this had been done twice by the same director, 10 years apart, but I accidentally got the more recent one when I intended to watch the original first.  After watching I read some reviews and discovered the remake is basically shot-for-shot so I don't know that I'll bother with the original.

Anyway, it's a strange movie.  I liked most of it, particularly the ending, but I didn't like the fourth wall stuff (especially the remote control bit).  I know it wouldn't have been the same kind of "commentary film" but I didn't think that stuff worked.

Just about his best. His Color of Money Oscar was essentially for this.

Lumet+Newman+Mason= genius!

I don't think his Color of Money Oscar was for The Verdict,   I think it was for The Hustler.  That imho, was he best performance.

The Borne Identity.   It was my first time watching any of the Borne movies. not bad.  How are the sequels?

^ Just as good but I prefer the second one but you won't know that because I'm on your ignore list but at least I've logged my opinion.

I'm sorry, didn't catch that, could you repeat it?

Ah, thanks.

I liked all three Bourne movies equally.  Perhaps I liked #3 slightly less than the first too, but it's a remarkably consistently-good trilogy.

Be prepared for a LOT of shaky-cam in #2 and #3, though...

I liked 1 a lot, and figured I never needed to see 2 or 3 again.

Damn shaky cam. Bourne 2 and 3 influenced so many bad movies...

I prefer Identity simply because the film is well constructed and just plays better then the sequels. Supremacy is not a bad film, but is merely okay. Ultimatum is essentially the same movie just extended for two more hours.

None of them compare to Ludlum's original novels.

24 Hour Party People.

I don't like biopics (think I just said that recently) but I was interested in this one as a big New Order (and to a much lesser extent Joy Division) fan.  It was pretty decent, mainly because Tony Wilson (at least the movie version) was a pretty interesting dude.

One thing that really sucked - the credits.  Worst credits ever, barely legible.

12 Angry Men.   I hadn't watched it in awhile.   What great, great, movie.  Great performances all around, especially from Fonda and Lee J. Cobb.   I wonder whether the kid really did stab his father  . . .

The first time I ever saw the ocean, I was real disappointed. "That's the ocean?!" I said. No, said Mom and Dad, that's just the parking lot. When we pulled into the lot, I was real disappointed in it. It was hard to find a spot, and the spaces seemed way too narrow, in my book. The ocean was okay, I guess, but I still can't get over how disappointing that parking lot was.

Ha-ha.

The credits had no bearing on my enjoyment of the movie.  They just sucked and it was something that stuck out to me.

The reconstruction of Frank Capra's Lost Horizon 1937 (with as much of the removed material put in as possible).

Some of the scenes are just stills with the soundtrack running over it but it was a joy to see this extended version of a film that has always had a special place in my heart. It wasn't that jarring for me as I'm used to watching Doctor Who episodes reconstructed in much the same way.

It's the sort of reconstruction that many projects on this place attempt to do but it's nice to see people in the business making the effort.

Well worth seeking out.

I actually thoroughly disliked 1 & 2, and never bothered with 3. I often get frowned at for having this view. I used to get frowned at for feeling the same way about The Matrix, but I think as time has gone on, hating The Matrix has become as cool as being obsessed with it used to be.

I've yet to see The Matrix.

The first one's good.  Just don't believe the people that tell you how DEEP and PHILOSOPHICAL it is.

It is neither of those things.

And avoid the sequels at all costs.

I thought they were pretty much consistently average.

The first Matrix film was greatly over-rated (probably because it wasn't TPM) and the other two greatly under-rated.

Visually they were the kick off point of a lot of recent cinema tropes but they are all very passable science fiction action films.

I avoided watching the last one for a long time because I didn't care much and it was almost universally slagged off but when I finally got around to seeing all three together about a year ago I found them all rather enjoyable.

Nothing that amazing but for what they are rather watchable.

Loved the first one, still do.  Loved the second one except for parts that really dragged (mostly the Zion scenes).  Hated the third.

As with the Star Wars Prequels, I found a few fanedited versions of 2 and 3 that made them much more enjoyable.

Warb, I suggest you at least watch the first one.  My wife is not a big sci-fi fan and hated 2 and 3 with an absolute passion, but she enjoyed the first one.

Still really want to see Lost Horizon.

Agree that the first Matrix is very enjoyable-make sure to track down the original DVD as that has the theatrical version before it was made overly green to match the two inferior sequels. For a truly great movie try Dark City.

Last movies seen:

Anatomy of a Murder-sheer fun and the length is not felt in the slightest. Has a fantastic jazz score, is permeated by a dejectedly humorous mood, and has Jimmy Stewart square off against George C. Scott. Oh, and Jimmy Stewart talks about rape and panties. ;)))))))

The Wild Bunch-is this the greatest American western ever? If not, it's right up there. Peckinpah's unquestionable masterpiece and still moving 41 years on. That restored soundtrack from the original 6 track is damn good. And Bill Holden's face is just beyond words in close-up.

Ah, Dark City is fantastic.  I'd recommend watching the Director's Cut, solely because the theatrical cut's narration at the beginning takes any and all mystery out of the movie.

Young Victoria.   Interesting movie.   I wouldn't say it was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, but it it kept me entertained for the whole length of the movie. Despite being an American, the British Monarchy interests me.
