Without going too far off topic (whatever, this is in Off Topic anyways....)

Sometimes people just get offended by words because of all the bullshit baggage for them that comes with those words. A couple examples. A few years ago I made a random Facebook status, "Sometimes I wish I were a Jew." I thought it was funny and often I wonder what my life would have been like had my parents been Jewish, as opposed to Scientologists. One of my FB friends, who was Jewish, got offended mainly just for using "Jew" like I did. There was nothing I could do to explain myself, she was pissed I said Jew.

The next one's pretty bad. I was talking with my buddy and her girlfriend, she's half-black-half-Jewish. She swears like a sailor and we always make jokes about everything. Anyway one time she was talking about slavery and how the Jewish people were slaves long before Africans. I said, "So I guess you could say, the Jews were the original n**gers." I don't know why I said it, it just popped out. I didn't even mean it as a joke, it was a comparison, but I used the shock word. Boy, she was not happy with that. I apologized like a madman and ruminated on it, and I realized there's thresholds you just can't cross.

Of course, you're usage was far far far far far less than what I said, but shit, people get offended sometimes for what one may perceive as a small thing.

TL;DR - White people are racist.

Don’t do drugs, unless you’re with me.

 Wow.

My dad worked for a nice Jewish couple for about twenty years and I had no idea there was a way to use the Jew that would cause Jewish people to be offended any more then I don't see a way to use the word Irish in a way that will offend me.

I guess you learn something new every day.

I'm sure you've gotten offended over a word before, and others didn't think it was such a big deal. I remember recently Gatos used the term "no homo" and you were so offended you edited his post.

Damn right, and I'd do it again.

Give me a fucking break.  If you don't see the difference then I'm not going to waste time explaining it.

I must not be getting enough context from the link, because "no homo" doesn't seem terribly offensive on its own. And you've been offended over things (particularly in the abortion thread) because you read into them to much, which is what people who see racism in everything do.

EDIT: I don't mean to gang up on you; I'm just pointing out that you're offended the same way, but in other areas. I'm sure everyone has an area in which they are easily offended, and I'm no exception. It's only silly when they make a big deal out of it, or they read into everything.

The link provides no context because it's been edited.  Google the phrase.

I Googled it in case I didn't understand it, which it seems I did. I still don't see as being very offensive (and I do mean to imply that it's somewhat offensive), though I can see how someone could be offended by it, in the same way I see how someone could be offended by what may seem like racism, even though not intended as such.

I can't see "Hasidic Jew" as being offensive in your context, however...

I would also like to inquire as to why should the phrase "no homo" be considered offensive and/or racist.

The word "homo" is, in this case, used as an abbreviation for the whole term. It makes sense because "no homo" is something one would say as a quick interjection, a puntualization between statements.

Just like everything, it depends on the context, and how you say it.

Louis CK said something similar about the word "Jew":

"Jew is a funny word because it's the only word that's the polite thing to call a group of people, and the slur for the same group. Most groups have a good and a bad one, theirs it the same word, just with a little stank on it. And it becomes a terrible thing to call a person cause if he's a jew he's fine, but if he's a jeeewww... like, that's all it takes??"

Please, can we stop getting offended on the behalf of others? Seems like it's the trend these days.

There's a polite way to use homo?  Give me a break.

Homo is offensive too.  Combining it with another word doesn't make it an "in this case" situation.

Plus, it isn't just the word that is the problem in this case, as you say.  It is indeed the context.  Basically, it would be like me saying that I think you're a cool dude, Leo, but hey, that doesn't mean I'm gay - being gay is icky.

I'm probably missing something.

Let me recap. Gatos apparently wrote "Peter Quinn is dreamy. No homo.", right?

That just means "Peter Quinn is a handsome dude, but I'm not attracted to him because I'm not gay." That is it. You, it seems, attached the "because being gay is icky" in your mind, not because you're homophobic, but because maybe you misread his intentions.

I've read and heard plenty of people expressing their personal point of view about a particular individual in that same exact way (So and so is really handsome, no homo), never once I've thought they were being racists towards homosexuals. It's just an expression. You may think it's inelegant and kinda rude, and I could agree with you. But deliberately offensive? I don't agree with that.

JEDIT: by the way, I've googled this Peter Quinn fellow. Does nothing for me.

I am offended by this because I can't understand the joke because I've never heard of that random ass movie before and I don't know the difference between a Hasidic Jew and a Normal Jew.

I see where Frink is coming from but I don't agree.

I don't see "no homo" as meaning to slam or insult homosexuals.  Of course I am not homosexual so I can offer no "personal" insight as to how it feels to hear the phrase, but I can tell you anybody that I've known who uses the phrase is not meaning to be insulting.

It is to me just a humorous way to clear up that you are not a homosexual, even though what you just said might lead people to believe that.  As a "funny" way to stop people from thinking things about you that aren't true.  I never understood it to be an insult to people that are "homo", just to clarify that although they like some characteristic about another member of the same sex, they don't want you to think they are homo.

I don't see it as insulting, but it is unnecessary and tacky, I don't really "approve" of it as a phrase.  I think it's kind of rude and I can see how it *could* be taken offensively, I just don't think that's the intent of people that say it.

So basically you could say I agree with both sides of the argument and this has been one long waste of time neutral post.

So when you say something that offends someone that person needs to just suck it up, respect your right to free speech, and stop judging you.

When someone says something that offends you that makes that person evil, their speech needs to be censored, and they should be put up against a wall and shot.  All because you are the ultimate perfect judge of right and wrong and you have never done anything wrong in your life so you have the right to stand in judgment of every single person who has or ever will live and anyone who disagrees with you on any point is pure evil and should be burned alive for their sins because you are the one and only perfect god who created the universe.

Glad we cleared up.  The one true faith that can rule on the absolute right and wrong of any issue is The Church of the Holy Frink.

The forum in question has stricter rules and I'm a moderator there.  There is no such thing as free speech on a forum with rules (including this one, btw). My understanding is that much of the gay community considers it offensive, so I consider it offensive.  So basically, kindly fuck off.

People who think the law and their will and own personal view points should be one and the same should never be trusted with making or enforcing any law or rules of any kind.

If you can't look beyond your own nose then you should step down and stop trying to enforce the law because you are not acting in anyone's interest but your own and you are just bully who is abusing your power to try and force everyone to agree with you on every little issue.

It takes a big man to look beyond himself and enforce the law and if you can't do that then you should at least have the honor to step down and resign from the job.

So anyone who isn't gay and says so is slurring gays?

So every single person on earth has to enter inter a gay relationship or they are slurring gays?

Does every person also have to have their skin dyed black or they are slurring blacks?

How come gays are the only minority it isn't okay to slur and everyone has to be gay?
