Without going too far off topic (whatever, this is in Off Topic anyways....)
Sometimes people just get offended by words because of all the bullshit baggage for them that comes with those words. A couple examples. A few years ago I made a random Facebook status, "Sometimes I wish I were a Jew." I thought it was funny and often I wonder what my life would have been like had my parents been Jewish, as opposed to Scientologists. One of my FB friends, who was Jewish, got offended mainly just for using "Jew" like I did. There was nothing I could do to explain myself, she was pissed I said Jew.
The next one's pretty bad. I was talking with my buddy and her girlfriend, she's half-black-half-Jewish. She swears like a sailor and we always make jokes about everything. Anyway one time she was talking about slavery and how the Jewish people were slaves long before Africans. I said, "So I guess you could say, the Jews were the original n**gers." I don't know why I said it, it just popped out. I didn't even mean it as a joke, it was a comparison, but I used the shock word. Boy, she was not happy with that. I apologized like a madman and ruminated on it, and I realized there's thresholds you just can't cross.
Of course, you're usage was far far far far far less than what I said, but shit, people get offended sometimes for what one may perceive as a small thing.
TL;DR - White people are racist.
Wow.
My dad worked for a nice Jewish couple for about twenty years and I had no idea there was a way to use the Jew that would cause Jewish people to be offended any more then I don't see a way to use the word Irish in a way that will offend me.
I guess you learn something new every day.
