I liked it more than the prequels. ;)

 I didn't. :P

The following episodes are indeed much better. I don't know if I would have watched any more if I had started with the movie, but what comes afterward is pretty good.

One of my television production instructors had a simple theory. A bad/mediocre pilot means a great tv series will follow. And the opposite is also true. Not sure how well it holds up in the real world though. ;)

The Shark Is Still Working (2007)  7/10

Each year, the 4th of July is the time when I watch "Jaws". I've begun the festivities a day early this year by watching this documentary for the first time. They cover a lot of ground, but still I was not that satisfied with the film making style used. I was following the production of this documentary on the Jaws forums a number years back, and I expected a bit more from it.

FanFiltration, your images are broken.

So, did anyone have an official rubber Jaws shark as a kid, and have it eat your action figures? ;)

Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014)

This movie was kind of meh for me. There were parts I thought were funny, but like so many comedies that try for the drama side, it just sort of felt like it was lacking on both sides. It was both a mediocre drama and a mediocre comedy. Many well known and loved faces in the acting game were the only thing that kept it above water. It was like a cheapened version of Stranger Than Fiction in feel. I'd probably give it another watch, but wouldn't really recommend it.

Benny & Joon (1993)

One of my favorite movies ever made. I love every frame of this film and as I've grown older, I really relate to Benny. I've watched this movies since it first came out on VHS, and will never avoid watching it if it is on tv.

I kind of wish people showed Aidan Quinn as much love as I have. The guy has so much natural talent. He's not going over the top for the oscars, just acting like a regular person would. He's got a Paul Le Mat realism to him. I compare him to Paul, because like him, he is a great actor that never really exploded like he should have.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Snowpiercer (2013)

Released a year ago in South Korea and just now getting a U.S. theatrical release. A really interesting and entertaining film. The action and humor both are great and the film overall has a really quirky pace to it.

Well i already paid for a ticket and some friends are coming so it's too late to back out.  God help me.  I'll take a suicide pill with me in case this movie is as bad as the other three.

Little room for a review battle. 17% on Rotten Tomatoes and 32 on Metacritic.

I would consider checking it out if it weren't three hours long. I do enjoy some good robo action and Marky Mark funky bunching. But I take my popcorn in bits. Anything longer than 100 minutes for a movie like this is way too long for me. I can handle stupidity but only for so long.

That is one thing I liked about the last Mummy movie(Which I am going to get around to giving my thoughts on at some point)and Sky Captain, they were both under two hours long.  We need more light adventure fair like that.  Some times less is more.

I'm still saddened by the fact that we'll never get another Sky Captain. =(

Yeah that makes me sad too.  it was like a movie made up of all the things I love. it was done in a style that I can't get enough of and it references to all sort of things i grew up loving from old comic books to shorts to old Superman cartoons.

If I were a billionair I would buy the rights and produce an animated series of Sky Captain on the internet sort of in the style of BTAS,that would be a cartoon I would be unable to get enough of.

I may be the only person on earth who cheered in the theater when Dex turned up on screen in Avatar, even if he was a villain.  I own the movie on DvD,HDDvD,VHS,and BluRay.  That is how much i love Sky Captain.

If a movie is really really good, you often don't notice the running time. A bad ninety minute flick can seem like years. ;)

Interesting how the tendency of studios putting scissors to a movie to shorten it's running time, so theaters can cram in more showings per day, seems to have reversed in recent years.

We should have a thread on movies that deserved sequels, and movies that inexplicably did get sequels.

It always amazes me that the first three Star Wars films are all around two hours long when it feels like more happens in then then most modern films.  The same thing happens with the B5 episode Severed Dreams, for some reason I always remember that episode as a two parter because so must happens in it.  It just goes to show you that a good story teller can do a lot in a short amount of time.

I have seen some 90 minute or less movies that feel really long because they are so bad but I do think a lot of today's movies could be shorter and not lose anything.  I mean a lot of them have very simple stories and if action scenes were not dragged out longer then they needed to be then the movie could come in at around the 90 minute mark and tell the same story.

I mean WOK managed to tell the same story as ITD in about half the time and do it better and leave it feeling more complete.  That is how much film making has changed in the past couple of decades.

If you've ever seen the ABC tv version, TWOK lost scenes here and there. Important character details were sacrificed for the sake of a leaner running time that would have only added to the film.

     EDGE OF TOMORROW

Great sci-fi. Great job all around. I'm glad the movie made back it's money, unlike other deserving sci-fi entries. It deserved to make much more.

I have seen that version and while the added scenes are nice they are not needed for the plot to make sense and all the character moments are still there and some of them are just stuff like Spock and Kirk climbing a ladder.

Sorry I don't think that making a movie longer makes it a better movie.  if that were true then Wild Hogs would be a better film then everything Charlie Chaplin produced.
