Birdemic...
Balls fail me.
50/50. It was quite good - the comedy was believable and was able to take a backseat to the drama unlike many movies marketed towards the lowest denominator these days. 3.5 / 4 balls.

And what of words?

The words went the way of a Happy Meal in a post-a-bird-a-lyptic wasteland.
Meet Dave (2008)
Seriously, negative balls. -10 out of 10 balls. I hate you man-who-replaced-the-real-Eddie-Murphy.
The Mission (1986)
Been meaning to see this for a while now and finally got around to it. Nothing to really write about. Great cinematography and score. Good performances that could have been better had there been something to actually go on. There is a point, but it's as if the meat of the story has been removed. A really empty movie.
Watched on LD letterboxed with PCM Dolby Stereo. Enjoyable presentation on a nice old disc.

Jabberwocky
Odd mix of Terry Gilliam's visual style with a Holy Grail-esque film. That said, this is a little gem of a movie that, even though it doesn't always work quite well, is always entertaining to watch. Michael Palin is very likeable as always. Despite a low budget, the film features a very well-realized Dark Ages setting. The gags are really quite funny for the most part too and actually feature into a cohesive narrative as opposed to the skits being more important.
The DVD is very murky looking and has unnecessary sound remixes though.
3 balls out of 4 potatoes.

Millennium (1989) - 4/10
^ A real shame that because the John Varley book is really good.
In fact the present day bits of the film are quite good and match the book (itself an expansion of his short story Air Raid and an adaptation of an earlier attempt to make a screenplay out of it).
The bits set in the future are really wonky and have none of the detail and charm of the book.
The Awakening (2011).
Rather nicely mounted ghost story set in a boarding school in 1921.
Not quite in the same league as The Orphanage (2007) but not far off it.
A few quality jump scares and a general atmosphere of unease.
I've been immune to Dominic West's charms until seeing this film, maybe I've got a hitherto undiagnosed kink for scabby legs.
3 Balls.
"Vantage Point" (2008)
Started off with a promising style, but soon became standard and unrealistic action fair.
Did Sigourney Weaver quit this film during production? Her character is introduced as important, then is totally forgotten about a quarter of the way into the film. Always sad to see good actors in such a bad flick.

I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (1932)
Classic, historically important film that has dated incredibly well. (Maybe because it's pre-code) Expertly told and completely flawless. Shades of film noir too for good measure.
4 balls out of 4 leg chains.

Don't forget, Captain Nemo returned in 1961's "Mysterious Island".

Yeah I actually wrote up a whole list of adventure/fantasy films I wanna check out:
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)
Mysterious Island (1961)
Atlantis the Lost Continent (1961)
Master of the World (1961)
In Search of the Castaways (1962)
First Men in the Moon (1964)
Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964)
War Gods of the Deep (1965)
Around the World Under the Sea (1966)
Captain Nemo and the Underwater City (1969)
City Beneath The Sea (1971)
The Island at the Top of the World (1971)
The Land That Time Forgot (1975)
At the Earth's Core (1976)
The Amazing Captain Nemo (1978)
Warlords of Atlantis (1978)
I seem to be in some kind of list phase. I'm also going through Don Bluth and Studio Ghibli films.
I've stopped posting in this thread so much because I feel like a street urchin at a state dinner considering the varied and culturally influential films many frequent posters put here. However, I can't hold it any longer. I saw The Hunger Games last Saturday. Like a good ol' poor boy who also steers clear of this sort of thing (never saw a single Twilight movie in the theatre, missed half the Harry Potters, still haven't seen Titanic), I figured I'd wait till it came out on DVD and check it out then. But Saturday evening I came home from a church meeting, and it turns out my wife had already put the kids to bed and made babysitting arrangements. So we went to see The Hunger Games, which I thought looked interesting, but not great. I can't speak enough about how I enjoyed this film! I've not enjoyed my theatre experience that much since The Dark Knight! It was exciting and emotional, and Jennifer Lawrence played the character so well...I really was sad when the film ended and I'm going to start the books today.

^Hmmmm....I do hear so many good things about the book. Hopefully that is the only significant shortcoming.
Oh, there are other shortcomings, I just didn't like what Katniss assumes they are.darth_ender said:

Fair enough. I'll give my impressions when I have the chance. Thanks :)
Black Narcissus (1947)
Not a bad film - the actors and cinematography are all very good - but it didn't really get interesting until towards the end, when Kathleen Byron's character goes crazy. I really think that if this movie had been written as an out-and-out horror film and directed as such, I would have liked it alot more.
5.1/10
5.1????
That's crazy talk!
At the very least it's one of the most important special effects films ever made.
Sister Ruth has to go mad near the end because of the tensions (sexual, sensual etc) have reached boiling point.
She is pretty warm to start with as it is, if you started with her at boiling point she would have evaporated by the end of the film.
