Do the names Frank Darabont and Rob Reiner mean anything to you?

Or the name Stephen King?

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

I did like the TV-Movie better, although the child was ugly and "Jack" wansn't Jack, but it was closer to the book.

And I just read "Carrie" for the first time. The book was a lot better than I remebered the movie to be.

Touché. I Keep meaning to watch Straw Dogs but keep getting sidetracked - the one with Dustin Hoffman. maybe tomorrow. anyone seen it?

Last watched was Psycho Beach Party - which I thought might be fun but turned out to be really really boring.

Also watched the American Grindhouse doco. Bit of an eye opener - Don't watch it while you're eating dinner ;)

re: zombieland - it was kind of a case of 'all there in the trailer' - I wanted to like it but there wasn't really that much to it.

The new Conan movie. Not as bad as I thought, but still poor. The special effects were awful, but the dialogue and delivery of said dialogue was better than the prequels.

Apocalypse Now-finally sat down with my 91 LD. Really enjoyed this version with little tinkering. Great soundmix of the original. And still mystical.

The Grapes of Wrath-occasionally a little heavy handed, but strongly reverential film that I caught the restored 35mm version of. Deserves its classic status, and of course plays with a greater weight today. Fonda's Tom Joad is a striking presence. And once again I was reminded of how Gregg Toland is probably the greatest cinematographer who ever lived. Just stunning.

Psycho. saw this later that night outside projected on the theater wall in 16mm. The print was in decent shape-lots of scratches but only one splice-and in open matte!! The film really looks better this way due to its TV production. Of course the shower scene was slightly cropped. But this was only done in some shots-and done quite badly. It was kinda funny. You'd all of a sudden see a giant black bar thrown up on the bottom half of the frame for a shot, part of a shot and then it would magically disappear. Weird. The mono sounded good, but occasionally bled through in loud moments. Great experience though. I do wish that Universal would give the option to see the film in full Academy though. It does look better than 1.85.

All three have immortal full ball ratings.

"The Anderson Tapes"

Someone mentioned this film a few days ago, and I had not seen it in about 27 years. Forgot how great the film was.  I love movies shot in Manhattan in the early 70's. Movies like "French Connection", "Shaft", and "Dog Day Afternoon". They have such a great ambiance.

Sunday night was rabid zomboid night at the Chateau.

First up was Rammbock (2010).

Structurally a German no budget fusion of REC (2007) and 28 Days/Weeks Later (2002/2007) in that it has the fast moving non re-animated viral infection of the latter and the enclosed apartment/flat block setting of the former.

The film itself has been infected by that most ubiquitous of contagions ' The Teal Virus'.

The horrid tint is all over this film.

On the plus side there are some really nice performances and quirks mixed in with the usual zombie film tropes.

If you don't mind seeing the emergency broadcast network come on and go off the air again (only this time in German) it very watchable, has a human centre to it and the biggest surprise is no bullets.

Next up was Quarantine 2 : Terminal (2011).

REC was a big hit in this latty, as was (to a lesser extent) REC2 and the remake Quarantine (largely because we have both become devotees of Jennifer Carpenter and a few of the scenes which weren't direct lifts from REC were good enough to have been seamlessly dropped into it).

One aspect of the remake I didn't like was dropping the supernatural angle which made REC even more creepy and gave some of the best moments in the sequel.

This sequel to the remake is both unique to the REC continuity and more traditional in the horror/under siege sub genre sense.

No shaky cam, group of broadly defined characters including a turn coat, smaller creature peril and a child in jeopardy.

Throw in a map exposition scene, the need to kill a loved one and plenty of going off into dark areas just to find monsters and you have a cheaper version of Aliens (1986) only in an airport.

It has none of the white knuckle roller coaster of any of the previous REC inspired films and it feels very familiar but probably cost a lot more.

On the whole Berlin was more rewarding as a zombie destination than LAX but it goes to prove just how difficult it is to do a good zombie film, whatever your budget.

I am No. 4- Probably the most original of the "cash in" movies (Eragon, Percy Jackson, etc.)  I always love a story about a hero who is running/hiding and then realizes their destiny/capacity is to fight.  I heard that this book/movie was designed to cash-in on Twilight's success.  I found it much more palatable than that.

X Men : First Class - I gotta say, I wouldn't mind watching it again. I thought the Special effects were pretty bad, but the film was good enough to forgive it. Definitely stomps Wolverine and Last Stand to the ground.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Glad you liked it! It's got that unmistakable early 70's grime and the location shooting by Lumet in his hometown can't be beat. I've always been of the opinion that Lumet and Scorsese are the true "New York" directors. I'm still flabbergasted at Martin Balsam in the film though. Totally unexpected.

Penny Serenade (1941)

The other night I got it in my head it was time to watch another old classic film. For some reason the title Penny Serenade kept ringing in my head, I would see it on occasion while scrolling through instant netflix. So I started it up expecting it to be a standard old school romantic comedy and was not expecting what I saw at all.

It's a story told through flash backs triggered by the female lead listening to her various records for one last time. The flashbacks get longer and longer until you forget that that's what they are at all. All the while you're following the lives of the two leads as they meet and fall in love and then later on their struggle to have a child and how it's affecting their relationship. Turned out to be a pretty good film that definitely knows how to tug at your heart strings.

2.  Just saw Temple Grandin.  It really did my heart some good.  I've worked a great deal with children and adults with special needs, and it sure was neat to see someone overcome the limitations that come with those needs.  It really was a well done film, and I'm glad it is so highly rated on IMDB as well.  Since I don't fully understand the rating system here, I will give it 8.5 moos out of 10.

I have a second comment to make.  I was looking at the IMDB forums and noticed a humorous exchange between some of the commenters there, particularly the postings of EsconcingCloakSwaddler.  It kind of gave me deja vu, you know...just a little bit...images really, feelings.  I wish I could remember more, but I think there is some sort of memory blocking going on there.  I can only reconstruct about 2/4 of my fractional memory in this instance.  But this seems like some sort of doppleganger.

"Manhattan"

Not as funny as "Annie Hall", but still a great Woody Allen film.

Manhattan is my favorite Allen film. Great movie-bit creepy nowadays-but still great.

Horrible Bosses-a one joke pony that unfortunately never decides to stop telling the same joke.

2/4 balls.

Bridesmaids-what does this movie want to be, a drama or bad wedding comedy? It doesn't know, and frankly I stopped waiting for it to make up its mind.

2/4 balls.

The French Connection-a true classic and the big "gritty NY" movie. I haven't seen the new controversial Blu-ray transfer and frankly don't want to because of the nature of Friedkin's tinkering. This movie is supposed to look brown and crummy like a early 70's Deluxe print. And the remix has too many added sound effects. Anhew, a true classic that doesn't lose impact and truly Friedkin's masterpiece.

240 pure classic balls! Do balls ever pick their feet?

BTW does anybody know of any TFC release that has the original mono soundtrack? I think it's on the Blu as a crummy ac3.

The Shadow. Found this on DTS LD at my local shop and finally decided to watch it all the way through. All in all it's an enjoyable little pulpy action serial, but I was surprised at the bits of refined humor snuck in throughout. Some nice one liners, a hero who actually disguises his face and voice, and a scene supposedly set in the 30's scored with a Kenny G soundalike. (Seriously, who the heck thought that was period appropriate????)

3/4 balls. I really like DTS on LD. It's fun.

The Seven Ups. Interesting quasi-sequel to The French Connection with a great car chase to boot. Not a great film, but more primarily concerned with character depth. A enjoyable watch and cheap DVD.

2.5/4 balls. The car chase is 10 minutes long. That's right 10 minutes!!
