Sunday night was rabid zomboid night at the Chateau.
First up was Rammbock (2010).
Structurally a German no budget fusion of REC (2007) and 28 Days/Weeks Later (2002/2007) in that it has the fast moving non re-animated viral infection of the latter and the enclosed apartment/flat block setting of the former.
The film itself has been infected by that most ubiquitous of contagions ' The Teal Virus'.
The horrid tint is all over this film.
On the plus side there are some really nice performances and quirks mixed in with the usual zombie film tropes.
If you don't mind seeing the emergency broadcast network come on and go off the air again (only this time in German) it very watchable, has a human centre to it and the biggest surprise is no bullets.
Next up was Quarantine 2 : Terminal (2011).
REC was a big hit in this latty, as was (to a lesser extent) REC2 and the remake Quarantine (largely because we have both become devotees of Jennifer Carpenter and a few of the scenes which weren't direct lifts from REC were good enough to have been seamlessly dropped into it).
One aspect of the remake I didn't like was dropping the supernatural angle which made REC even more creepy and gave some of the best moments in the sequel.
This sequel to the remake is both unique to the REC continuity and more traditional in the horror/under siege sub genre sense.
No shaky cam, group of broadly defined characters including a turn coat, smaller creature peril and a child in jeopardy.
Throw in a map exposition scene, the need to kill a loved one and plenty of going off into dark areas just to find monsters and you have a cheaper version of Aliens (1986) only in an airport.
It has none of the white knuckle roller coaster of any of the previous REC inspired films and it feels very familiar but probably cost a lot more.
On the whole Berlin was more rewarding as a zombie destination than LAX but it goes to prove just how difficult it is to do a good zombie film, whatever your budget.
