Sounds good. I was hoping someone would attempt an edit of this movie. What are your thoughts regarding the many answered questions and confused story points within the movie? Will you be simplifying or streamlining the story at all?

Well, from the pieces that I have (theatrical cut, promo material, deleted scenes) , I dont think any unanswered questions will change, Im trying hard to nip/tuck out headscratching moments, like the death of the biologist and geologist, and lines like "god does not build in straight lines", "DNA MATCH" and whathaveyou..
.
Im not a scientist, but I believe a 90% match woudve been enough, and waking up to find the bio/geologist offline, seems creepier then seeing the wonderful practical/cgi effects of the penis/vagina snake aptly called the 'hammerpede'

my whole goal is to build more tension in the film and make it MORE of a mirror of Alien, then the theatrical edition was.

Basically as an intro to the alien franchise, even with Prometheus' eventual sequel, I wanted this edit to better set up the world run by wayland industries. A world fueled with ego and ambition, and I wanted to re-insert a little bit of AWE into the film.

Theres little to no awe of starting the movie with the engineers, then jumping to Scotland to introduce our main characters.... David, and by proxy Wayland were always our main characters, Shaw is just a true believer who survives. By building a better world and showing that this is a more slow burn sci-fi that gets creepy by minute 45, and action-y by an hour and 15, lets us settle into our seat, and start asking questions later in the film, rather then from the credits sequence.

David's line "remarkably human" now holds some weight to it, and we as an audience hopefully will unravel this film about creator/creation relationships.

Nice project! I really look forward to watching it.

Love your opening.  Much better than the theactrical version, and it's good to see the young Peter Weyland (strangely missing from the theatrical version).

I watched the deleted scenes last night.  Made me realise how poorly the theatrical version is editted (especially the scene when the Engineer attacks Shaw).

yeah this is one of those films that would've benefited from another go through in post production.

As for streamlining though.... Im having a hard time justifying less of shaw's story, but with the help of alternate/deleted/promo scenes I think I'm actually taking away so much of the engineer's story, and screentime.

We'll see how that turns out when I get some rough edits of the whole thing.

if anyone has any ideas, or anything to bring to the table, im all ears.

Since I uploaded that 12 minute clip I've been playing with the young Wayland speech. I took his ending introduction and put it into the beginning, Making the whole thing and on the note of "we are the Gods now".

Part of me hates how he's directly Referencing something we're going to see within then five minutes, But at the same time showing David watching it and showing wayland referencing it helps solidify that these two are two halves of the same person.

Or David has been programmed to have the same interests as his creator.

I don't mean to Sound like I am going against your ideas, You definitely have something there about time gaps and whether that will lose an audience after the first two minutes.... But I think the first time that we see 'Prometheus" in text should be that introduction in space.

Part of me wants to include the 'arrival of the engineers credit sequence' at the end of the film what do you guys think about that?

Nice work on the soundtrack replacement.

Just out of curiosity, what formats will the edit be available in?

The music replacement on the map room scene was great. On the whole I liked the Prometheus score but there are places where it doesn't seem to fit. I really liked the change here..

The insertion of the viral clips feels a bit jarring, with a bit of refinement it could work nicely.

I'd agree about trimming some of David's early scenes - especially the Lawrence of Arabia stuff after we just saw Weyland recite the scene..

I'd also consider reworking some of the scenes to imply David roaming around doing his own thing while the rest of the crew eat breakfast etc..

I actually had a similar idea to use Peter Weylands speech for an opening scene but overlaying snippets from the extended waterfall opening. I'd also end the speech with "WE are the GODS now!" - Then have the movie title appear during that initial space shot.

I really like the idea of more focus on Peter Weyland and David, and less on the rest of the crew.

Ultimately I'd love to remove things that contradict ALIEN to imply that it is the same ship on the same moon sending out the same message - maybe combine Shaw's final message with the garbled transmission that the Nostromo crew listen to.. Not sure if it can be done but that would be my dream edit of the film - that is the film I wanted Prometheus to be.

More of an alien3 feel / style would definitely be welcome - in flicking through the deleted scenes I noticed a part where Milburn picks up what looks like shed skin on the ground - it reminded me of that scene from Alien3 in the turbine..."in the year 2525..."

The funny thing is for me I loved the original opening, would have moved the Isle Of Skye into one of the dreams David is watching but the real crap starts with the briefing scene.

If you cut anything that scene has to go.

Make it so the crew know where they are going and that Weyland is onboard already.

The less of Guy Guy Pearce's awful Halloween cake makeup the better.

I'd drop the angle about the alien buildings being a weapons lab too.

The opening establishes that this liquid does a job and they have to make the stuff somehow so why not have the alien in the 1979 film the main ingredient in their ritual DNA solvent/ re-compiler?

That explains why they venerate the alien.

Without it they wouldn't be able to spread life.

That way the ship in 1979 is still old it's shipping the cargo presumably to the place in this film and something went wrong and killed the goo makers.

Two other options spring to mind.

We see lots of buildings so it would make sense if Milburn and Fifield the geologist/cartographer go to the next building (not freak out and run away) to prepare the ground for further investigation.

They get lost in a place that isn't mapped yet during the storm and then return to the other building because the corridors are moving around bringing them back to the ampule room.

I'd try and cut out the reanimation of the head, it's really silly.

I'd trim as much stuff showing them to be idiots as possible (it's scarier when plausibly intelligent people get killed).

The other bit I would be tempted to lose even though it's creepy is the fish in the eye bit.

It makes more sense that Holloway begins to visibly sicken away from the ship.

If he suspected something was up he would at least have told the medical officer and one hopes Shaw too.

I'd try and edit the Fifield mutant attack (the CGI one if possible) into the sequence where Holloway is killed.

They return and it gets on the roof of the bus. It creates merry hell and kills people Shaw crushes it under the wheels of the bus and Vickers torches Holloway.

I'd have the squid baby die in the medpod.

The engineer is already infected with an alien (that is why is in hypersleep) and he is as much in a rage because David has killed him by thawing him out as in his question.

If possible I would reverse the impact of the ships.

So the Prometheus is trying to head home and the engineer rams the Prometheus to maintain quarantine.

I'd remove Shaw's assumption that the Engineers lost faith in us.

There is no evidence for it.

It's pure assumption as is the assumption that they made us.

I'd leave it as an open possibility but remove it as a main motivation.

Weyland may believe it or at least believe they are advanced enough to extend his life but having it just taken for granted weakens the film as does the 100% DNA match (I'd lose the results entirely as they are scientifically meaningless gibberish).

In the challis scene we are never sure which world it is.

The implication that it's pre-historic Earth should remain that, an implication.

I'd try to remove that annoying Trekish score motiff too.

Nice to hear the Alien 3 Fox Fanfare again.

While the TED talk does lead well into the Prometheus in space I don't get your antipathy towards the original opening. It's probably the only thing in the film that really deserves preservation.

I can see Engineer scene, TED talk, Prometheus, David doing his thing (no need for the 'Happy Birthday David' material unless it was shown on the same screen as Lawrence Of Arabia). Have the Skye cave as Shaw's or Holloway's dream and the Quiet Eye as Weyland's or Vickers' dream.

I don't know if it's possible but maybe David can access the Engineer's memories directly when he is in stasis like he does the crew, that way the challis scene can be kept but your intension of not revealing the Engineers until later can be maintained.

That's just my perspective though.

I'm looking forward to seeing an alternative take on this film which really disappointed me.

This. I was just thinking about this and had an idea. I'm really not keen on seeing all this text in a suposed dream sequence but why not keep Shaws dialogue - or some of it [from the quiet eye viral video] and combine it with footage from the Isle of Skye sequence - keeping any of that dialogue if / when needed. That would seem more dreamlike to me, kind of real but a mish mash of memories.

That would help in justifying the removal of the briefing scene since -

A - we've gotten a taste of Peter Weyland nice and early eslewhere

B - we get an idea of what these science geeks are into.

C - both Holloway and Vickers give out inaccurate info in the briefing.

D - the crew should know what's going on before they get there..

E - The Weyalnd hologram lies to the crew but wants them to trust him at the same time.

and the best part - the Hyper Sleep music from Alien could be used in the background.

I would probably go right from the Tedtalk to the initial space shot - with something like "X MANY YEARS LATER" onscreen then cut directly to David walking in and spying on Shaw dreaming. cue Jerry Goldsmith..

Not going to lie, I really like the idea of cutting the briefing scene out. Or at the least, trimming it severely.

I've worked on adding the cgi fifield scene, as well as slipping the deleted scenes towards the end of the film. I'm definitely trying to make film longer, but trying not to sacrifice pacing of the final hour or so.

a new viral video titled "transmission" came out. As well as a longer young wayland speech... I know you all may cry out PADDING!! But hear me out. I have a spot for them in the beginning of the story... Or the ending.

i have another less rough/longer opening that I'll upload soon

If someone can help me with jdownloader I can try to make a DVD, otherwise I will host a high quality .mp4 somewhere.

it'd be safe to bet that by Halloween, I'll just have an .mp4 up.

As far as I know, Jdownloader is used for downloading stuff (off Rapidshare, Mediafire, etc). Anyway, that's what I use it for!

I could be wrong though...anyone?

By the way Strangeland, I would really like to watch your edit once you're done...

I know there's a way to use J downloader to breakapart Files into smaller Rar files.... Or I'm making that up and I'm missing something out there... I just have four other fanedits I've never been able to upload to Fanedit.org

I'm going to upload version 2 of the opening and hopefully the first hour tonight. It'll be rough and I haven't taken anything out of the briefing room scene... So maybe as a group we can figure something out.

I hope you know if you contribute anything to this thread before it's done I'll try my best to put a special thanks credit at the end of the video just for all the help that I've gotten from you guys! I appreciate all the feedback check back later tonight for a clip!

Cool, I prefer Dropbox. It's simple to use and i can access it on my tablet when I'm out and about.

I've been checking out some of the 'transmission' clips on youtube - while they probably wouldn't be ideal to insert as they are I can see bits and pieces that can probably be pinched.

Watched the longer TEDTalk clip, It's got some good stuff. Weyland still comes off a little rant-y but he seems to be trying to convince people rather than just showing off..there are still parts that exist in both parts that i'd trim out.

I've been thinking about the possibility of removing the squid from the plot entirely - maybe some of the David montage from the start could be used later on to fill in the gaps.

I don't think we'd lose anything important by not seeing him alone on the ship early on. Given that his skills as a translator aren't needed until the end of the film we could probably see him practicing later on during the storm while most people are just sitting around..

Author
Time

That's interesting. I would go for removing the squid, part of it seems so right... But I can't lose that scene in the medical pod. Also I think the transmission video in small clips could help branch the wayland intro through the David intro. Or even a piece on the end cutting into shaws transmission.

i guess one of my original intents in this edit was to drag out the opening and make them land on the planet later. So far with a longer wayland intro and transmission clips, the Prometheus lands at minute 31, instead of 25. Not so much longer, but undoubtably filled with more information setting the stage. I like the young wayland monologue not only because its the best we could've got out of guy pierce; but because it lets the king have a speech. The David commercial makes you simultaneously be charmed and disgusted at David, allowing the remarks that everyone makes to him not bring human, resonate more.

I wonder if the dialogue from the otherwise stupid "Our First Alien" scene could be played over the discovery of the decapitated engineer?

That way Milburn would sound pleased to see a sample of the first alien biological life smart enough to build a door sharp enough to cut it's head off with, like most biologists would be, instead of running away from it like a big baby.

Milburn NOT acting like an asshat? I'd like to see that.

i have scoured though footage, looks like Milburn will ALWAYS be an asshat.

also, sorry for the delays, Ive been going back and forth between working and rendering... I guess i can lose the transmission clips. Maybe... An hour and 10 minutes are currently uploading onto the dropbox.

SEE: Some Deleted Scenes!

DONT SEE: Milburn and Fifield's deaths. And some other trimmings too minute to name.

HEAR: some alien/alien 3 soundtrack and mother sounds

DONT HEAR: duh-naaaaa-nananan-na-na-NA-nanaaaaaa
