I’m not sure if this qualifies as a fan edit or a preservation. But I’ll take my chances in here because I consider it my fan edit lol.
This is my first post on this site, I’ve been lurking for years following the great work that everyone has done here on various different projects. During the pandemic, I’ve been working remotely and that has given me some free time to pursue a fan edit that I’ve been working on since probably late 2007 (Whenever the Season 3 DVD of LOST came out.) Anyways, I was disappointed to find that my favorite episode of the series had been split in half for the DVD and Blu Ray presentations. Fast forward 4ish years and I received the Complete Collection on Blu Ray and found that now the finales of Season’s 1, 2 and 3 were all split in half. And not only split in half, but scenes were removed for time. WTF? This is not a complete collection with 3/6 finales being lame edited for rebroadcast cuts of some of the best episodes of the show.
For Season 1 and 2:
Using the complete collection Blu Ray discs as my primary source, I’ve restructured both episodes to match their exact presentation from the DVD’s/their original broadcast. To fill in the missing scenes, I used AI Topaz Labs Video Enhance software to upscale the DVD footage to 4K and then mix it in with the blu ray footage. Ultimately the project is 1080p. I had some free time, but not tons to do a 4K remaster of LOST. I’ll leave that to ABC if they ever decide to do so.
For Season 3:
This was trickier. The Season 3 finale has never been officially available in it’s original broadcast version. It’s only been available as the 2-part split. Which means somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-3 minutes has been trimmed and several scenes have been rearranged for broadcast. So for this episode I again used the blu ray as my primary source but had to use an old edit from 2007, before I knew what I was doing, and an even older (and dare I say shit?) quality hdtv rip source to fill in the missing moments. Unfortunately that means that this episode has more noticeable dips of quality for trained eyes and ears. I’m also missing the 5.1 mix for the missing moments, so trained ears will notice some of the cheating I did to get around that.
I’ve never had much success in mastering for blu rays, but I do have links to my edits on Google Drive. I’m happy to share them for feedback and write up a complete edit list at some point. Just wanted to gauge general interest, as well as see if any members might have held onto old High Quality HDTV rips of Season 3. I used to have what I need but I deleted it when the DVDs came out because I wasn’t expecting to be blind sided by a split in half episode lol. I’m also happy to hear suggestions on the best way to share these if Google Drive is no good.
I’m 100% finished with the Season 1 and 2 finales. Season 3 is finished, but I know it could be better if I had higher quality material to fill in the few gaps.
Anyway, thanks for having me on here. Hope to hear from some fellow losties soon.
