Woaw, it is a must have!
Lets face it, LucasFilm is a whore when it comes to merchandising. I personally don’t have a problem with any company making money of a large fanbase. If a market exists, and fans are hungry for the product, than that’s great. But I do find it kinda sickening the extent of the outer and extended universe offerings. For example, action figures of characters who showed up in the extreme background of a scene. I found this image over on Fukung that says everything I want to say about the Lucas merchandising machine. Too bad this action figure doesn’t actually exist, because sadly, I would consider buying just for the laugh factor.
Only now it would come with a microscope to see the Midichlorians. :P
The fans who make detailed dioramas of scenes from the films certainly want those fleeting background characters. I'd buy the six breasted dancer from Jabba's palace for laughs myself, but I haven't spotted one with a decent paint job.
And they still haven't made Bespin Ice Cream Man yet! ;)
Where were you in '77?

Star Wars has turned into such a cash in. It always was a big merchandising thing, but it really ramped up in the 90s.

Not really. If you thought the 90s were bad I'd hate to see what you thought of 1978. Merchandising has been an integral part of Star Wars since its inception, the only difference is that it stopped having good movies to justify the fun commercial whoring.
Cashing in accompanied by movies (particularly good movies) strikes me as more acceptable merchandising (to my mind less cashing in) than cashing in that is accompanied by no movies. I feel the 90s cashing-in stank. Star Wars was mostly all cash-in then, unlike before when it was the movies and their accompanying material. And when the 90s cash-in was finally accompanied by movies, they were mutilations of Star Wars. The huge 90s movie-less cash-in left a bad taste in my mouth. There were so many more Star Wars books in the 90s than in the 70s or 80s and I never could see the point to so many of them. So many books and games and this and that -there wasn't that bulk of that stuff back in the old days, though you could get Star Wars party cups if you wanted them.

Ah, good clean fun commercial whoring. I sure do miss the good ol' days.
