Kai Patterson's Ahsoka Cut

Anyone else watch this yet? It’s very well put together imo. I thought the last act still dragged on a bit but not nearly as bad as sitting through the last three episodes of the show. That’s the fault of the show’s writing and not Mr. Patterson’s. I loved the approach to fixing the Sabine saber stab among other dumb things - just remove those scenes completely. That and many other welcome changes, removals, new VFX, and scene reordering made this a much more enjoyable experience.

Thanks Kai!

I liked the edit overall. The middle portion of the edit was the best by far. The opening and closing acts were a bit mediocre, but that is mostly a result of the show being filled with content that was not the greatest.

I still think the closing act could have used a bit more trimming here and there. I really think it would be a good idea if someone subbed out Thrawn’s lines in the show with ones made in Rebels considering we are using the exact same actor (or another one of his roles). Thrawn’s decision making in the show was not the greatest to put it mildly (he could have easily wiped out the 3 heroes with an aerial bombardment for example). Alternative dialogue could help alleviate some of those issues.

I would recommend it, but it is still far from perfect and that is because the source material was not the best.

I believe Kai said that he was fine with most of the show, it just needed its fat trimmed. I’m inclined to agree with that assessment. To your point, see the following article which seems to suggest that the tactic you’re referring to is exactly what Thrawn does. It just isn’t as effective or precise without more Star Destroyers.

As for my own thoughts on this edit, I thought it was wonderful. Took the show from a 7/10 (due to it dragging on) to a 9/10. I do have a couple issues with it, though:

  1. The title crawl won’t stop BOLDING text! LMAO. It’s honestly kind of comical. I didn’t count how many phrases were bolded, but it was definitely more than I’ve ever seen from any other movie. Real Star Wars crawls are much more reserved than this. The only thing that needed to be bolded was probably the Star Map MacGuffin.
  2. Stormtroopers appear out of nowhere in the middle of Ahsoka’s fight with Morgan from where the characters just came from. Up until that point, we’re meant to assume Morgan and the two Death Troopers are the only ones being left behind according to what Thrawn says. We also see these same stormtroopers (and the Death Troopers) acting being zombies without much of an explanation. I wonder if it’s possible to add a shortened version of the fight at the base of the tower to fix these issues.

I rather enjoyed this edit. I was glad to have more of the Baylan/Shin stuff kept in as that’s often trimmed too much for my tastes as they were my favourite aspects of the original material. The VFX work is incredible, particularly the World Between Worlds section.

The restructuring of the opening act works very well from a story perspective, but feels a little clunky in practice, particularly surrounding Morgan’s rescue and the arrival of Baylan, Shin & Morgan at the Henge. Also, Huyang’s AI lines could use another pass in my opinion; content wise they work, but they are a little too far removed from David Tennant’s admittedly extraordinary delivery and stick out a bit too much.

Overall I think this will become my go-to version, despite the minor quibbles. I do hope for v2 one day that tidies up the little loose ends.

I didn’t even notice the AI lines or know that they were a thing. Then again, I only watched the series once and it was on a whim after all the episodes were out as I thought this was mostly a throw away series like almost every other disney star wars product (I think we know what the exceptions are).

I agree that the opening act worked pretty well but there was that moment when Baylan and Shin show up a the henge where I was thinking, “Wait, where’s Morgan? Didn’t they just pick her up?” But oh well, it ended up working out okay.

A v2 would be nice to clean up the third act a bit more but overall I liked it.

I had this same thought initially, but it’s explained away pretty quickly in a later scene where Morgan arrives in her own ship. Clearly she needed to make a pit stop to gather all of her witch belongings.

Only found out yesterday that the edit was released when KP himself released a video on YouTube detailing the process. Will watch this evening. 😃

Is Ahsoka pointless without Rebels? Because my wife and I really don’t want to sit through it, and I can’t find anyone who has condensed it significantly via edit. I mean I see edits, but I want to get the highlights in like 1 or 2 movies. Just whatever is relevant to Ahsoka

There will be some context that is missing if you haven’t seen rebels. That being said, it is a spin-off of the mandalorian, and filoni and favreau are making a movie that will coalesce all of these post rotj shows. I would say Patterson’s cut is the best of the fanedits that I’ve seen, and well worth a watch.

Rebels has too much going on for an edit like that. There are some filler episdes, but overall the show is a pretty plot driven from a single point of view.

Just watched this edit and it does a great job to “accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative.”

The flow and pacing are much improved over the series, the little fx additions and tweaks are cool, and even the characters become way more likable (sulky Sabine and bored Ahsoka are gone, we now have a far more charismatic pairing at the heart of the film). The series did feature some great money shots with epic vistas and grand fly bys of spacecraft and star whales, and by keeping them in and removing much of the filler it makes this edit feel a good deal ‘bigger’ and more cinematic.

Definitely worth a watch!

Can anyone tell me the difference between the regular versions and the lite version?
