To coincide with Peter Jackson’s remake, Warner Bros. has just released a 2-disc special edition of the original King Kong. I picked it up the other day & was pleasantly surprised to see that it was packed with extras

Among the extras was a ½ hour documentary on the lost ‘Spider Pit’ sequence. For this of you who don’t know, this scene is the holy grail for Kong 33 enthusiasts. It takes place after Kong shakes the sailors off the log. Apparently, some of them survive the fall into the cavern, only to be devoured by giant insect-monsters. This scene is in the original script, and there is evidence that it was filmed and once part of the movie. However, the scene was cut, and through the years the footage has been lost, and has yet to be recovered.

While working on the remake, Jackson & his WETA crew decided to take the knowledge that they had of this scene & faithfully re-create it. The scene is about 5 minutes long, and was completely re-made & dulled down to match the look & feel of the original King Kong. The scene is included in its entirety as a bonus feature, but not inserted into the movie…until now…

I had a feeling someone would be doing this soon enough... and it only took 2 days after the DVD came out for it to happen.

They should have given us the option to watch it re-inserted into the film with seamless branching.

THAT'S AMAZING!

This is indeed one of the most coveted deleted scenes in Hollywood history! Did they use stop motion for the insects or what?

And yes, I would be interested in this as well as a colorized version of the original film. I've had a couple of attempts to acquire the latter fall through.

Yeah they built all the creature models and did stop-motion animation just like the way it was done in 1932. There's a great little doc on the DVD about how they did it all.

I don't think it is a good idea. It is not a "real" deleted scene, since it was only created a few months ago. I am glad that it was not reintegrated in the movie on the dvd, since this scene was directed by Peter Jackson not by the original filmakers.

I am happy that the scene exists as a special feature on the DVD and I can watch it.

PIRACY?!?!?!?

how so? all i did was insert a new scene, and offer it to the community. it's not for profit. it's not like i'm gonna mass market it & put it up on ebay for $25 each.

ADM recently did the same thing with his extended cut of Revenge of the Sith. Are you gonna go cry pirate on that thread as well?

and if not, WHY? After all, he's also meddling with readily available material. i'd really like to know how you differenciate this in your mind

Devilman-1369,you have a PM,and as far as piracy,on ADM's Special editions he DOES add in his own personal touch,however on the Extended Editions,it is NO different than what Devilman is doing here(adding deleted scenes back into the film),so i personally see no problem with this at all,there are ALOT of projects here,where people are adding and deleting scenes back into or out of the retail DVD.

dude, you should probably take a closer look at some of the other edits that are offered up on this site. not all fan edits require 'personal creativity' from the editor. in fact a good portion of the fan edits found here are nothing more than extended cuts

an extended cut is when you take a movie, and re-insert deleted footage, thus extending the length of the movie, and in alot of cases, bringing the movie closer to the scripted version. the only 'personal creativity' contributed by the editor is in adding the scenes seamlessly. there's no need for anything more. the intent is not to re-tell the story, just fill in the gaps with what was once there.

if that's not your thing then that's fine. but don't declare something pointless merely because you aren't interested in it.

...and if you're worried about the warners shutting down the site, then you'd better go over to the Superman thread & warn everybody over there because the extended Superman cuts include HOURS of reintegrated footage

The ironic thing is that someone is whining about piracy about the one and only movie on here that's now in public domain. Anyone can do whatever they want with the 1933 King Kong and release it themselves since it ended up in public domain years ago. The only thing that is technically pirated in this fan edit project is the new spider pit scene Peter Jackon's group filmed.

Just a quick update for those who were interested...

i went back & fixed up some quality problems that i noticed the first time watching it all the way through...i think i got them all, and the movie (so far) looks great

i did add the documentary about the restoration of the Spider Pit sequence as a bonus feature on this disk.

i should have a finished product by the time i get home from work tonight. i'll be burn testing & QC viewing tonight & tomorrow & should have the first copies in the mail on saturday (monday at the latest)

also, i'd like to state again that the 2 disk official release of King Kong is fantastic, and i highly recommend that all Kong fans go out and buy it...the only thing better is the 4 disk box set which has the 2 disk Kong, and Son of Kong, and Mighty Joe Young

i haven't seen any commercials or publicity for this set, but i don't watch TV too often either. If anyone has seen or knows of any advertisements about the official DVD release of these classics, please let me know because i'd love to add them as features on my Kong DVD

Yeah, I guess for fun. The scene's been lost for a long time now, so I guess they figured it'd be fun to recreate it. Remember, not only did Jackson and Co. work on the 2005 remake, but they actually produced the big documentary on the 1933 King Kong DVD. So I guess whatever they wanted to put in it went in.
