It looked kinda off to me how the smoke didn’t move when Vader started breathing like it did in ROTS. Budget simitations I guess…

I don’t like the piano version. Sad is not the intended tone of the scene. It is meant to be horrifying. Vader snapping that kid’s neck is one of the few genuinely shocking parts of the series. Obi wan is feeling terror, not sadness.

Author
Time

I’m still team all-piano as I got more of the feeling that Obi wan was experiencing horror for what Anakin has become more than fear for his own safety. Obi doesn’t seem to hold himself in high regard at the moment so I didn’t feel that he was that scared of dying in the moment, and was more experiencing fear in the sense of fearing the reality of who Vader is and what he has done. It a fear of the truth rather than a fear of “I’m scared he is about to hurt me”. Seeing the kid be murdered didn’t cause Obi to flee in fear because he was scared that that was about to happen to him to, he stared in shock because he feared the truth of his failure to Anakin. This type of fear greatly changes how the scene should be scored, but of course this is all open to personal interpretation. I would say he “feared the sadness” which is why I thought the piano theme is most fitting.

I was stunned when I watched with the piano score. It’s a bold, creative choice with a haunting effect. That said, as with all things subjective, your mileage may vary. I’m just glad that version exists even if it doesn’t find its way into the final release.

This entire episode could be skipped and the story wouldn’t be hindered in the slightest, rather it would be improved as it would imply that Vader allowed Kenobi to escape so as to lead him to their base.

Absolutely agreed. What a waste of an episode when only three are left.

This episode just screamed TV filler episode and a bad one at that. Thankfully, it shouldn’t be too hard to skip it in the movie edits. While Obi-Wan is fighting Vader, Leia actually gets to the transport ship and is not intercepted by Reva. Also fixes the Reva magically appearing at the end of the tunnel.

Utilize the Bacta tank opening scene as a transition to “hopefully” Episode 5. Possibly utilize some of the other inquisitor base scenes to fill out transitions.

You have to. I don’t know if episode 4 can be saved. It’s bad bad. No underwater security? Darth Vader now speed walks? Snow speeders just hover oddly? vader doesn’t kill failures? Obiwan thinks a trench coat for a disguise will work? I literally cannot think of one salvageable moment? What if Obiwan let the water come in and they will escaped through the water?

Just finished watching, that was… not good. Extremely generic prison break sequence with little to no tension or purpose. From the time Obi-wan enters the Inquisitor base to the time he leaves, only 15 minutes of show time goes by. That is astonishing to me. Not much of it is believable, the inquisitors again look beyond incompetent, and nothing important happens whatsoever. How many times are we going to see 5th brother and other inquisitors walking around doing absolutely nothing besides grunting?

The only redeeming scenes in the entire episode to me are the bacta tank one in the opener to use as a transition, and I also thought the ending scene of Leia holding Obi-wan’s hand was well done and can be reused somewhere in your edit for a tender moment.

My Star Wars radar must be broken because my friends all criticized the same things, yet I found myself thoroughly enjoying this episode. The Snow Speeders were a bit shoddy but it wasn’t so bad that it bothered me. I thought the sets looked quality and felt that they delivered on the scale throughout, which is something I feel they have been struggling a bit with in the earlier episodes. I think the character of Tala is a fantastic addition to the Star Wars universe and carried this episode for me with a stellar performance. I still believe cutting down on the Inquisitors’ dialogue is key to making them work but despite that, I am liking the writing for Reva and Moses’ performance as the episodes continue.

The episode gave me Dark Forces vibes and was comparable to Mando season 2 episode 4 imo, which I also loved. I’ve been loving this series so far (I think it is miles ahead of BoBF personally) and believe after tightening the screws just a bit, this series can be crafted into a nearly perfect product.

It is important to note, I can’t shut off the editing part of my brain anymore, so I may have less of an issue with poor writing, performances, and visuals because I know I can just edit it after the fact. However, all that being said, I can understand not seeing the value in this one for the overall narrative and wanting it to be largely skipped over in an edit.

What?

I mean, this one could be skipped. And depending on the last two episodes and their content of worth, I’ll take the removal of this episode into account when those are released, but what? Are we watching the same show?

This episode (despite some of Reeva’s dialogue and running) had the highest production value and interest of conflict thus far in the series for me, and the lack of security and intellectual stormtroopers (which, let’s face it, has been a thing since ANH) doesn’t ruin this for me.

This episode had me engaged from the get-go, and unless the last two episodes have so much content that keeping this episode would be impractical for the overall pacing, I think I would keep most of it.

And come on. The “the good guy gets away” has been a thing since 1977. Outside of Star Wars, it’s been a thing since the beginning of film. That Darth Vader gave up a hunt I think we all can assume he finds amusing and fills him with purpose doesn’t break immersion for me the slightest. I’ve come to expect that.

This was levels above episode 1 and 2.

The underwater sequence, the Jedi tombs, the torture device, Leia grabbing Obi-WAN’s hand at the end, the music finally delivering, Obi-Wan finding back to his Jedi ways, Tala as a character, the shot of the stormtroopers drowning, the probe droid hunting Obi-Wan - searching through the glass window with the eerie music… this episode had memorable, emotional, intense moments!

And of course, perhaps since I went in with insanely low expectations this time around, perhaps I also saw more value in the episode, but this was a 8/10 for me.

And PS:

imagine how beautiful it will feel when The Force Theme plays as Obi-Wan prevents the glass from crushing down upon them, followed by him steering it towards the Stormtroopers.

And:

As for Darth Vader not killing Reeva for her “failure” (although she for the first time ever did something smart in this series you ask me), remember I don’t have the scene with Vader on his throne warning her, so this doesn’t create any problems whatsoever.

It isn’t broken at all if you ask me. I agree with you.

And the Snow Speeders aren’t actually Snow Speeders. They were used in other climates as well throughout Star Wars lore.

If this was a 10 or 12 episode season, I think this episode would have been fine, but we have only 6 episodes and Obi-wan just fought Vader and was nearly killed. Instead of the emotional impact and ramifications this should have had on Obi-Wan, we have to deal with ANOTHER Leia rescue mission. These writers are awful. Zero creativity and lazy.

I completely see your point, but I would rather argue that Episode 2 is the true filler episode and that Episode 4 is the better-crafted episode with increased stakes and emotional weight, way more deserving of it’s place.

It should actually be Episode 1 -> Episode 4 -> Episode 3 -> Episode 5&6

If anyone wants to do a more radical edit then I think trying to remove one of the “Save Leia” plotlines, preferably Episode 2’s, could be a very interesting and perhaps immensely successful approach. For this edit, though, that would feel fanedit-y and perhaps break immersion for most, so I think that reducing the time spent on Episode 2 and increase the time spent on Episode 4 would be ideal. But again, this completely depends on the overall pacing of the fanedit - I might find myself having to remove most of this episode, only keeping the opening in the Bacta Tank and the end of Obi-Wan and Leia as suggested above.

As for now I will edit the episode into my timeline as “canon” for the edit, but I will definitely remove it if the last two episodes are immense (and important at that) in content.

I originally hoped to get 2 movies out of these 6 episodes, now I’m questioning the possibility of just ONE quality movie edit.

I expected more out of an Obi-wan series, Lucasfilm needed a homerun from their greatest characters, Kenobi and Vader, and instead we get a lazy pop fly to center field. Just my 2 cents.

Here is hoping this community can do something special with this clunker because I have completely lost faith in Lucasfilm at this point. With that being said, it does have its moments, they are just few and far between.

This should always have been one, quality movie. I completely agree. I hope I or another faneditor can bring some joy to you from this mess. This episode worked for me, it didn’t work for you. However, our frustrations are the same and hopefully fanedits can salvage this immense clusterf* of bad/good dialogue, bad/good music, bad/good acting, bad/good action, bad/good character arcs and on and on it goes…

This series could have the tag “It’s bad… and it’s good… but the bad is really bad”. Removing the bad should help tremendously.

AND PS:

I also know that having watched the fanedit many times now (at 1 hour and 26 minutes up until the end of episode 3) without all the horrible dialogue and chase sequences, not to mention The Inquisitors, and an overall increased pace, I am way more optimistic than I was after Episode 2.

I hope that when you see so much of what you dislike gone, be it this or any other fanedit, you will find great(er) joy.

Don’t give up on Obi-Wan. He just needs some help 😄

It was likely originally outlined as a movie before Solo killed the “A Star Wars Story” lineup. Like Boba Fett, I suspect that they dug up the outline and expanded/stretched it into a season of episodes.

I agree with Anjohan about the production value of episode 4. This episode is really what we should have received in place of episode 2 (that was too weird for me, personally). Episode 4 have way more emotion, better acting, scenarios and action indeed, and the outline is basically the same of episode 2.

That being said, I agree with the others that after episode 2, this episode smells strongly as filler, unfortunately. And given the intricacies of the story, it’s really hard to connect episode 1 to 4, then episode 3,5 and 6, picking key elements of episode 2 for the transitions. After all, Obi-Wan meets Tala in episode 3, Obi-Wan changes his clothes in episode 4… It would be really contrived to make this show to work in the 1,4,3,5,6 order.

Well it could be saved by you just watching it better.

There’s limited security because they feel confident nobody would attack a castle full of Sith, they say that at least twice. Vader can always walk quickly and has done before, he just mostly strolls out of choice. The speeders have appeared a single other time in VI where they had no need to hover so that’s not even slightly a valid criticism. Oddly enough Obi-Wan was trying to escape from the castle and didn’t have time to stop off in the TARDIS wardrobe for a better disguise and used the only thing he had at the time. Oh, and only Obi-Wan has a rebreather, how do you think he’s going to get Leia and the spy out underwater?

Vader has killed for far less. That’s what threw me off, character inconsistencies.

Either way it would be convinient and/or bad writing. How so? Obi-Wan doesn´t have the opportunity to look for a better disguise (per your argument) because the writers deem it to be that way. So your rhetorical questions running nowhere.

If you do have a way to enhance this episode into content for your edit Anjohan, then I will certainly support you in that endeavor.

I was expecting an explanation for why Vader didn’t go through the fire and a look into his psyche after seeing his master again, some deep Obi-wan character development after meeting Anakin for the first time in a decade, and redemption for the threat of the inquisitors, but this episode did not touch a single one of those aspects. Yes, we saw Kenobi start to get back into form but it was only seen in his actions in combat, not felt through good character development.

This was the shortest Star Wars live action episode we have ever had in anything, and for me the poor pacing overshadowed the few good moments that were present (Obi-wan in the water hallway, the tomb of dead Jedi, and Leia holding Obi’s hand). Like I said, there was only 15 minutes of screen time from when Obi-wan stepped foot on the inquisitor base to when he escaped with Leia. We were given the shortest live action production in the history of Star Wars after what happened last episode which makes no sense to me. From the get-go the pacing was wonky with the random rebel guy changing his mind in 30 seconds after suddenly remembering his deceased wife. Wade was introduced and died within 2 minutes, but it seemed like we were somehow supposed to care about him. Tala open hand godslaps a stormtrooper and shoots 2 of them precisely THREE seconds of screen time after Reva walks away… The hallway door hadn’t even closed yet, Reva was literally 10 feet down the hallway during this escape, how did she not turn around after hearing the blaster fire? I am flabbergasted as to how this is acceptable production quality. Perhaps I am letting expectation ruin this for me, but this was a 3.5/10 episode for me, very disappointing and by far the worst of the show.

Maybe there is a way to combine the best parts of Episode 2 with this episode 4 to make a coherent Act 1?

He didn’t kill her because she didn’t actually fail. She put a tracking device on the ship and because of that they were going to find them and their base. It was just like what they did in ANH with the Falcon. They let them escape for a greater advantage.

Not to worry though, Vader’s definitely gonna kill her by the end.
