KENOBI: A STAR WARS STORY [RELEASED] [5.1 Surround] — Page 25

I like GLogus review and agree to most of his points. I have a couple more to add to his list:

  • In the very end, Obi-Wan meets Luke and there is an abrupt change in the music as the scene changes to Obi-Wan in the desert.

  • Just before the scene where Leia falls and Obi-Wan uses the force to hold her in the air, it’s a bit unnatural to me that Leia started running like mad. In the original she is not convinced Obi-Wan is a real jedi, whereas in the edit he already used his lightsaber and all that. Perhaps there is a way of sneaking one of the shooting scenes in the start to make it look like Leia is running from the line of fire? (Do we have any audio of Obi-Wan telling Leia to run? Perhaps that would do the trick.)

  • In the same scene, it looks like Obi-Wan is telling Leia to go somewhere, perhaps even jump? Then she jumps and Obi-Wan changes attitude immediately and goes “oh no, she jumped” or something to that effect. That also didn’t feel natural. I’m not sure if that can be easily fixed.

Otherwise, this is my go-to media for Obi-Wan from now on. Thanks a lot Anjohan! Good job!

Know that I read your reviews and comments both here and in the PM’s, and I’m very glad most of you like it and I am also very happy for good, constructive feedback.

I will revisit with some changes when my Kenobi Fatigue wears off a little (if all, then i probably won’t touch it until 2023) and then we’ll have some requested alterations.

I will come back to the changes that will be made, and the changes that are requested that will NOT be made probably sometime next week or thereafter - When I feel like pumping out the final changes.

Nothing major, and nothing that would require a ton of work - luckily. 😃

Thank you all for the beautiful compliments and encouraging words, and know that I read and appreciate every comment and feedback. Even though this is my fanedit and my vision, I think being a faneditor it’s a beautiful thing to also listen to the community and shape things in a way that is still true to your vision but in a general sense makes the product more approachable from all different, subjective angles. So I’m happy to do a V2. 😃

Meanwhile, enjoy the edit, enjoy other edits, and have a great week! See you soon.

  • Your friend, Anjohan / Andreas.

ALSO, PS: If any of you found issue with some sound being too loud and downloaded the Stereo version, know that the 5.1 version adresses the compressed musical alterations and deliver a better sound experience by far. 😃

When I watched your fanedit of Kenobi a star wars story with non-spoilers,as it brought more depth to the climatic scenes of the inquisitors, fortress inquistorious.

Things I liked from the show
I like how you cut Reva fending of Owen’s Lars Family/Chasing Luke Scenes
Shortened mercenary chase for Leia Organa scene
Ending of where Ben meets Luke at the end

Some things that can be improved a bit better
Cut Haja saying maybe a 1000 credits and I will show you some new tricks what do you of the force my friend( since he’s not the person there looking for).
Shorten out the devastator chasing the path insurgents.
Improve the scene soundtrack where Kenobi is served by his butcher lord.

Everything else looks alright to it, so great job Anjohan.

Just a couple of thoughts on Disney Star Wars as it may pertain to this edit:

First, I’m a big fan of subtlety and nuance, whereas Disney is always heavy-handed and super obvious. They overstate nearly everything without much sophistication.

Second, I love it when the First Order is depicted as inept and stupid but hate it when the Empire is. The way I see it, the First Order are a bunch of wannabe copycats, but the Empire is the real deal, terrifying and formidable.

I’m too busy (lazy) to make my own fanedits, but if I wasn’t, I’d be guided by these overarching principles in dealing with Disney Star Wars.

I’d love to see this! Beyond a few key scenes that I’ve seen on Twitter, I actually haven’t seen Kenobi yet. This will be the first time that I’m viewing a fanedit as my first exposure to a Star Wars movie/show, which is exciting.

Had a lot of fun watching the first part of your edit! I liked how you cut together Kenobi’s working days and nightly terrors, I thought that was very creative. When it comes to trying to tell the story of a man who is tortured by his past, you paint a better picture then Disney did.

Connecting the Daiyu sewers to the Inquisitor fortress I found very creative and funny.

It’s when we get to Mapuzo, I feel your edit loses steam. We kind of follow the original show from then on and the editing frequency seems to take a hit. I think your edit would improve a lot by trimming down some of the more let we say “not so good” scenes. For example, you kept the whole “Frick and the stormtroopers” scene, without editing anything. I feel if you can shave of about 15 minutes of the total running time from scenes likes that, your edit would improve vastly.

Nevertheless very nice effort, good watch!

GLogus said:

This edit was fantastic. I love most of your creative changes, even the bold ones. Your boldest cut, cutting one of the two kidnappings, was necessary for the flow of a 2-hour film format, so I very much approve. The whole edit was very satisfying and emotionally resonant.

Some positives are that you made Reva much more intimidating by taking the “less is more” approach by having her yell less. She’s a worthy villain now.

I also like that, somehow, you have mitigated the overall ‘cheap’ feel of the production. Not quite film quality, but much better nonetheless.

I’m happy that you kept the Owen and Luke scene in the end. In my opinion it fits seamlessly given the conversation between Obi-Wan and Owen near the beginning of the film.

I did take notes while I watched, so if you ever do a v2, you can take these into consideration:

-In the saloon scene, where the Grand Inquisitor says the way to hunt Jedi is with patience, I believe Reva should still throw the knife, because it’s an effective means of drawing out the Jedi. That way, it’s a “show don’t tell” moment where, instead of a long, nonsensical speech from the Grand Inquisitor about the weakness of Jedi compassion, it is shown that the Jedi will indeed intervene to prevent someone coming into harm’s way. I feel strongly that you should keep the knife throw, because it says a lot about Reva’s character in a very brief instance.

-During the scene where Leia is kidnapped, keep the kidnapper’s answer when Leia asks him what he’s waiting for. Have him reply “for you” right before the sack goes over her head. I say that because it’s quite a frightening shot of him (I also just think it works better). Also, as you have it now, you can see the kidnapper’s mouth still moving even though he’s not saying anything.

-Reva repeats later that “the Jedi hunt themselves”. This line doesn’t work because it only makes sense if someone explains it first, but you’ve already cut the lame explanation given by the Grand Inquisitor. (Also, she wouldn’t quote the Grand Inquisitor; she doesn’t like or respect him at all, so why is she seemingly emulating him).

-Obi Wan asking Haja for help: I like the old version better. The old exchange is very abrupt, admittedly, but the new exchange just has Haja making weird facial expressions without saying anything. I think some kind of hybrid of the two versions would work best. Make it less abrupt, but have him still SAY he will help. And again, like the kidnapper scene, you can still see Obi Wan’s mouth move even though he’s not saying anything.

I’ll also add that I believe keeping the “making amends” line is appropriate. It helps to reassure Obi Wan, at the very least.

-In the escape scene, I can’t believe you cut out the part where Obi Wan was holding the glass in place to keep the water out. That part was frickin’ cool! Maybe it was too badass given that Obi Wan is just rediscovering his powers, but still…it was cool! Keep it!

-The audio transition between the Grand Inquisitor calling Reva “…The least of us,” and her saying “I want every lowlife…” is really confusing. Why does the audio have to bleed into previous shot like that? I just don’t think it works because the viewer thinks she is in the same scene saying that line rather than realizing it’s part of the next scene.

-Why does Kenobi ask Leia “How old are you?” when he was present for her birth? I get that the line is meant to be playful, but I already think Leia is a little overcooked when it comes to Disney trying to portray her as unrealistically precocious.

-The “Who’s in the gutter now?” line after Reva impales the GI doesn’t make sense because it doesn’t call back to anything. The GI mentions it only LATER, but that only adds to the confusion. I think it’s more badass if she kills him without saying anything anyway, i.e, more ruthless and cold.

-On the mining planet, Obi Wan snaps at Leia twice in a way that I find very out of character for the stoic and composed Obi Wan. This is with the “People are not all good Leia” and the “No one is coming here” lines. It is not in Obi-Wan’s character to he this negative and irritable (even if he has been having a rough few years).

-The vision Obi Wan sees of Anakin on the mining planet doesn’t really make sense or serve much of a purpose. It could just be his PTSD, but people can’t really relate to this sort of thing unless they’ve had PTSD themselves. There’s just not enough context for it, so it seems weird.

-The “Nothing wrong with a little order, right?” line seems a little on the nose. I also can’t shake the feeling that the depiction of the driver is just Disney’s idea of every Trump voter in existence.

-Obi Wan goofing and calling Leia by her real name in front of the stormtroopers is incredibly careless and stupid. He’s not that dumb (and never would have made that kind of mistake in the PT or TCW). I believe you can cut it out and still keep the conversation they later have about Padme afterwards. I also like the depiction of the stormtroopers as just regular military guys doing their mundane jobs and not being very invested. I feel like that’s lost when they start interrogating him a little harder over having called her the wrong name.

-Is it possible to use VFX to heighten the gate? I mean, you can see that it would just be so easy to walk around.

-When Tala comes and Obi Wan is ordered to the ground, HE’S STILL HOLDING AND POINTING HIS BLASTER! Perhaps the blaster could be cropped out?? It’s dumb that the officers wouldn’t have immediately ordered him to drop his blaster.

-As a general comment, there is simply too much time spent on the mining planet (before the confrontation with Vader), and the film starts to drag. I feel like there are definitely cuts to be made to tighten up this part of the film and keep the pace going.

-Just as an idea: When Obi-wan is saying sorry to Anakin and starts to cry, maybe have flashbacks to young Anakin from TPM. It could be argued that he was done dirty by the Jedi, and that’s where it all started. He was taken from his home and his mother, and then immediately Mace Windu, Yoda, and the other Jedi rejected him, meaning Anakin was more or less abandoned from the get to, i.e., he leaves his mom, the Jedi Council rejects him, Qui Gon dies, and Obi-Wan (at the time) was very reluctant to take him on. On behalf of himself and the Jedi, Obi-Wan indeed has a lot to be sorry for.

-I still have no problem with the “Then my friend is truly dead” line and still think it should be reinstated. It completes Obi-Wan’s emotional journey of ‘letting go’ by accepting that Anakin is indeed gone. It’s a powerful moment that ties well to ANH.

-On a minor note, at 2:15:39 the music transition seems rough.

Once again, great edit. Thank you for taking the time to read.

these are all pretty solid notes i tend to agree with most of it.

Work has commenced on V2. I was supposed to take a longer break, but f*ck it, I’m a perfectionist and I can’t let things rest if I see potential.

The suggestions I’ve had from some of you are more than good, and there aren’t many I disagree with. I’ll go into more details before release and update,

but here’s the more major alterations:

  • Cut 2 min 40 seconds from Mapuso (as suggested above). It does indeed lose some momentum, and the pace of removing the Stormtroopers taking extreme interest in Obi-Wan and Leia and all that (although a good enough scene in its own merit) does increase the flow a lot and help in the film structure.
  • Reeva does now throw the knife (again), and THEN the Jedi (Nari) run like it is presented in my edit (as suggested by GLogus).
  • Cut Reeva landing in her own, private ship with the Stormtroopers on Jabiim. Instead, she simply has arrived WITH her troops - and the bombardment and shooting of the Rebel Door is all increasingly dramatic and better paced, as to not waste too much time on silly shananigans (me).
  • The Laser Gate on Dayiu is instantly shot at by Obi-Wan, and instantly opens. This doesn’t make the Laser Gate seem like this giant obstacle that it does in the series/film. Obi-Wan (and Anakin) used to shoot door panels all throughout the series, so this is totally in character and should actually work as a homeage of sorts (Glogus and me).
  • Smoothen out audio transition with Reeva talking to her thugs (as suggested by GLogus), as some might find it confusing.
  • Cut the line “The Jedi hunt themselfes” from Reeva speaking to her thugs, as I cut the Grand Inquisitor’s delivery of the line on Tattooine (this I actually had forgotten about, thank you, Glogus).
  • Smoothen Haja and Obi-Wan conversation before The Alternate Rescue.

… and more, as suggested. This is just from the top of my head.

Things that will NOT be changed:

  • The line “How old are you?”. Simply because it is meant to be playful, and it does create some great banter between them. In the heat of everything going on and all the questions Obi-Wan is asked from this (at the time, to him) troublesome little girl, this scene made my girlfriend chuckle a lot. This being a family saga (and a family film), I don’t find it a smart move to remove EVERYTHING that goes slightly against logic. Sometimes, a little family lightness goes a long way.
  • Obi-Wan using the force on the window in the new, alternate Escape. Reason: Obi-Wan using the force in an impactful way does ruin the implication that when Obi-Wan DOES use his force powers in full (later saving Leia), is when Anakin can sense him. Therefore, Obi-Wan using the force can not be kept for reasons of believability and continuity.
  • The line “Who’s in the gutter now?”. Although it’s original reference is gone, the line still holds value in the sense that it shows Reeva’s hatred for the Grand Inquisitor. Having removed a lot of the Inquisitor Banter and cringe in the film, this line serves as a nail in the coffin imo. Removing it would most likely leave certain audience members confused as to why she killed him in the first place. When she delivers the line, we will immediately ASSUME that this is the way the Grand Inquisitor has ALWAYS treated her - like a gutter rat.

@VulgarisMagistralis: I haven’t noticed anyone having issues with this, and on repeat viewings I still can’t find issue with this if I try. I think the reason Leia is running is because, for the first time in her life, she is being SHOT AT, and this is why she is running and panicking. I think it works. Thank you for your suggestion tho’.

Woo! One thing to add, the bottom of the Kenobi logo can be cropped a little. There is a remnant of the underline from the uncropped logo on the left side.

I would also even suggest removing the whole “A Star Wars Story” from underneath and just have the Kenobi logo larger. Rogue One didn’t have the “A Star Wars Story” in the title card either.

The Skywalker Saga:
I / II / III / IV / V / VI / VII / VIII / IX
This is the way.

@Vranir: I’ll probably have it ready till tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, so shouldn’t be too long a wait. It’s literally just “cut and trim” alterations to be made - which is a delightful change. The major work is all done in V1.

@DZ-330: I actually like the little underline to the left from the original. I think it’s nice symmetry, hehe.

I’ll keep the “A Star Wars Story” because I think it’s beautiful and it fits, but I’ll make the “Kenobi” more the focus point. Good idea.

Hey Anjohan! I watched the V1, great stuff, now we have the Kenobi we deserved. The one that was hidden in the series, as you pointed out from the very beginning, even before the series was half way through. Glad to read that V2 is on the works now, I think the changes you pointed out can help improve the film and the parts you have chosen not to change are the parts I wouldn’t change either for the V2, they work as they are.

About the Haja and Obi-Wan conversation before The Alternate Rescue, I agree with Glogus that the “making amends” should come back, as it explains why Haja accepts to help (It might be too on the nose for some, but to me, it helps clarify he is not a bad guy, just has been derailed from the good path a bit in this hard times, but has a good hart), but I think the scene works as it is, except I would mute or delete one of Obi wan sentences on it. With Kenobi’s determined “and you are going to help me” we don’t need the doubtful “will you help me?” that comes later. I think going from “and you will help me” to Haja’s acceptance/resignation gesture should be enough. A jedi is telling you to give help and you will. Then Haja can “make amends” to keep him there the rest of the film.

Another scene that might (might not) work better is, when Obi and Leia argue in the ship escaping the destructor (I wish there was a way of explaining why they don’t send the Thai fighters immediately or why they don’t obliterate the ship entirely, or at least a way to make the entire sequence 30 seconds long, to avoid the other 2 options). So having Obi wan argue with Leia, then fixing things with her, then talking to an adult (Haja) about making certain she gets home then leaving ship maybe flows better than: argue- Haja talk -fix things with Leia -leave, as it is now.

All in all, love this edit already as is, this is going to be my go-to (or the V2) when I want to revisit Kenobi (which I now want to do, not as with the series).
I think your job and nightmares sequence works really well and does the job way better than the series cut, and the alternative rescue as you call it would feel natural to a newcomer. Your point for Obi not using the force there is solid to me.

Many thanks to Andreas and every one participating in this.

PD: I know this was out the minute I first watched it, but thanks for cutting out the dumbest backflip ever recorded in the history of TV

I will just keep lurking in the shadows lol! Keep up the good work and don’t get burned out! I’m certain you already know, but it’d be better to keep a pace then get burned and stop before its perfect. I know how you feel however, I’m the same way about my art 😉. I will be here for V2 whenever that is being processed. Well done and mad props for keeping up with a community of perspectives.

Oops. You are totally right. I forgot about that. Sad to see it go, but I’m a big proponent of only having one kidnapping and also the way you’ve set up Vader sensing Kenobi. Can’t wait for v2. You’ve taken a pretty bad TV series and turned it into a pretty great movie.

Excited to see V2. I know it’s a pain, but hard to let something go until it’s finished. Been there.

  • You can see Tala in the elevator when they are escaping, can you mask her out? She doesn’t come out of the elevator.
  • I still am pushing for removing “Have you come to kill me?” line. I love the “I will do what I must” from Obiwan, but why would Vader say that when he was chasing Obi?
  • Have you thought about an ending that doesn’t have Lars or Luke? Without the Reva scenes (which didn’t make sense anyways), this makes less sense. It also feels more canon for them not to connect based on “he’s a crazy old wizard” line from ANH.
  • To the rescue, I would remove the elevator on the front half (since he goes into water) and put in the back half when they actually ride up the elevator.

I’m in the same boat as vranir, I was just getting ready to watch the edit when heard of V2 hahah. I read the reviews and compared to the respective scenes on the edit, and thought about some things:

InsertCointent said:

For example, you kept the whole “Frick and the stormtroopers” scene, without editing anything. I feel if you can shave of about 15 minutes of the total running time from scenes likes that, your edit would improve vastly.

Yeah, I also agree that this scene could be cut. First because it doesn’t add too much to the story, and second because of the motive presented by GLogus:

GLogus said:

I love it when the First Order is depicted as inept and stupid but hate it when the Empire is. The way I see it, the First Order are a bunch of wannabe copycats, but the Empire is the real deal, terrifying and formidable.

And about the “imperial cruiser chasing the rebels ship” scene, I posted something in another thread to make it a bit less strange (sorry if you already read this and decided to not took this approach, Anjohan):

You can just cut the supposed hyperdrive problem entirely, and make Obi-Wan wanting to confront Vader just because he wants to resolve this personal conflict with Anakin (this is somewhat confirmed by his conversation with Roken). To accomplish that, I think that would be necessary just to cut most of the chase sequence, and insert a shot of the rebels ship entering the light speed right after Obi-Wan’s ship has launched. You could even relocate part of the drama with Obi-Wan and Leia about he being left behind for when they are leaving the planet, i.e. right after Reva being stabbed by Vader but before the beginning of the chase sequence in space.

This way, you make the Empire less incompetent for not sending tie fighters after the rebels ship, since they would have escaped too fast after they leave the orbit of the planet. Just an idea, though.

And, personally, I think that the scene where Vader doesn’t stops the second ship because of Reva wasn’t shown very well. It’s too much information in a very short time. I saw a video in reddit that takes the same approach, but cut the flashback for the moment, and for me the idea is much more clearer:

https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsKenobi/comments/vq5kka/the_other_ship_escapes_but_it_makes_more_sense/

Of course I don’t want the flashback to be cut, but maybe it could be better placed in another moment, I dunno.

And at last, I agree that the “Have you come to kill me?” line from Vader doesn’t make much sense.

Overall, thank you very much for making this edit Anjohan, you are doing an amazing job with the various editing choices you took so far. Good luck with V2, I’m looking foward to it!
