I’m happy with the direction things are going here, no further feedback from me at this point. I think it’s very close and just in the finishing touches stage.

Opening

So, NFBisms made one hell of a opening in the spirit of what I think most of us expected the tone of Kenobi to be, and people really wanted to see it in this edit when it dropped. Me and NFBisms talked about it (page 16 or something) and I really wanted to use it, but parts of it broke with the promised tone of the rest of my edit (mostly the complete lack of music and too rapid of a pace).

So, what I did was that I re-made the opening in the spirit of NFBisms’s opening, and completely stole his first 90 seconds (because it marvelously sets the tone) and some tidbits throughout. Then the soundtrack slowly gets introduced (only the real somber tones) as we build up to a kind of PTSD-climax.

I felt really invested in this 5 minutes, well done! I agree with the above in that the flip shots feel a bit off though. Since Kenobi is doing the same things day after day, I think it should be fine using the original angles.

I’m going to be a hater/stick-in-the-mud yet again and say that I personally am not a fan of this. lol.

It’s edited quite nicely, don’t get me wrong. But it feels too “comedic” to me, for some reason. It reminds me too much of something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIKl0HwunyU

(Also, fair warning about that clip. It’s pretty NSFW and gross. lmao)

BrotherOfSasquatch, that’s totally okay. I see where you’re coming from, and I hope you will enjoy it (or learn to like it) in the spirit of what the edit aims to do and how the film will leave you feeling after the full experience.

As a former cancer patient and now a survivor, PTSD often feels liked a rushed, chaotic experience with a sense of dread and sorrow, and sometimes even a dark comedy you just have to chuckle at, so I feel the opening sets that tone very well. At least I hope it comes across that way to others.

Thank you for your honest opinion.

Thanks, lads and gals. Greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continuing support and love.

I’ve read all your posts. I’ll edit more tomorrow when my tinnitus (just been at a concert) calms down. I can hardly hear the sound of my own footsteps. lol.

And suggested alterations will be looked into and altered. Cheers.

I’ll be sincere, I prefer the NFBisms version of the opening. Personally, I don’t have a problem with the fact that the NFBisms’ version doesn’t has music, after all it’s just the first five minutes of the movie and it has the sole purpose to summarizes Obi-Wan’s routine. Besides that, the absence of music makes the scene more impactful and helps to start the film really strong (and NFBisms edited it in a really unique way that just works really well). But that’s just my two cents.

That’s fine. It’s a beautiful opening, but it does break a certain amount of tonal and audio centric continuity and a promise when compared to the remaining film (even tho the tone and pace of the film itself is something darker).

I feel like the low, somber musical tones and a tad slower pace help build that continuity and promise.

The opening of a film should always be a taste and a promise of what’s to come imo, and with the “original” opening I promise a very different, dark film. That’s why I had to do my own version. The film is dark, but it’s not a solo character drama in a universe that’s more like a Dark Drama than the adventurous Star Wars.

But hey! He’s making his own edit, so there will be a beautiful dark, character drama down the line. And perhaps it’s a good thing our edits starts different, although similar. 😃

Thank you so much for that. No one should have to fight such a disease.

It was in 2010, treatment ended in 2012. So it’s some time ago now (and thank god - which I do - for that).

I wish your father good health and a speedy recovery. Don’t ever for one second think that cancer = death. That’s not the case at all - no matter the odds, and I bet your father is gonna beat the shit out of that fucker one way or the other. Stay in there, Omni, and don’t let a day pass without love and possibly even a few laughs if possible. And don’t ever forget to talk about the tough feelings.

Life is about family, love and good health - without those we fight an uphill battle for the rest of our life’s.

Stay strong! Lots of love and positive vibes to you and your father!

Pretty sure I read somewhere that if it’s been over ten years since last relapse, the chances of cancer returning drop to like nothing.

Oh, yeah. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very much excited for this edit! Also, I never took into affect the real life implications of how PTSD is when it comes to this opening. I’ll have to keep that in mind when I watch the final cut.

I have two questions

  1. I really hope you keep the part where Kenobi tells Leia about her parents

  2. And will you be killing reva on jabiim? The best editing choice I have heard is having Vader kill her in jabiim

-> (Re-)Added Intercom Dialogue with Haja, and some new dialogue to create some character growth and motivation.
-> Added shadows and enviorement interaction to and from door, in the escape part (at the end).
-> a lot more.

This is great! It sells the idea that the rescue takes place all on the one planet.

I’m not sure if this has been talked about before - I’ve not seen it mentioned yet (not that I remember!): the Disney Lightsabers make a few sparks when they hit each other, as opposed to the brief white flashes seen in the original Star Wars movies.
Is this something that can be corrected, so that the Lightsabers match what is seen throughout Episodes I-VI?

That’s correct. And certain types it’s even less.

Thank you, brother. Happy to hear that! Mission accomplished. Last piece of the puzzle is having Leia walk with Obi-Wan completed. Posted a new test up above.

It can probably be fixed in certain areas, although not all. If to remove all, I’d literally have to start remaking sabers and backgrounds every time they bleed into something complicated. Not worth the effort imo.

However, you raise a good point. I could remove some perhaps, to “even it out”. They look realistic and cool tho, unlike the new sabers from Toys’R us.

I second this…sorta. I don’t have a strong preference for NFBism’s version or anything. But I think, as brief intro, and somewhat of a recap, it’s allowed to be tonally inconsistent to an extent with the rest of the film. I just don’t think it’s that much of a problem, but since you went through the trouble of making an alternate version, well…I guess that’s fine, too.

Hi Anjohan,
the project looks very good.
First of all, sorry for my English, it is not my primary language.
For Leia’s escape I think a scene of some elevator to connect the underwater base with the surface drug lab would be appropriate.
This is just a test. Perhaps it is not the most appropriate elevator and not the best quality, but I think the scene flows better.
It’s just an idea.

I’m still trying to make my mind up about Obi-Wan letting Vader live; I do think it was an intentional thematic decision, because it dovetails with Obi-Wan’s remark to the escapees that “You’re what needs to survive now” and his reassuring Reva that our choices in the here and now, and not the past, are what define us. My interpretation was - Obi-Wan is done with the old fight, and he’s no longer going to allow himself to be haunted by Anakin; instead, he has finally embraced Qui-Gon’s teaching of the “living Force”. At the end of his arc, Obi-Wan has become altogether more passive; accepting; fatalistic - which coheres with the character’s actions in ANH, when he chooses to sacrifice himself as opposed to fight Vader tooth and nail.

But!..

If an edit was to be attempted that gave Obi-Wan a more explicit reason NOT to kill Vader; could Obi-Wan sensing Luke in danger not be used? Bring Obi-Wan’s visions of Luke’s peril further forward, so that he senses this soon after Vader is defeated and so rushes away more immediately after their duel? It would probably entail losing the “So long, Darth” line - which is shame!

I think the lighting needs to be changed to match (that greenish tint), but I like a lot to add that they are in an elevator. The question I have is does he do the elevator after he “steals the card” or before? I almost feel after. So elevator scene happens right before Leia and Obi come out on top.

I almost think that elevator in reverse at the opening with Haja over the communicator may be better as a transition from door to elevator to Obi in water. On the way out, we as an audience will automatically assume they use the same elevator out, so need to show again.

Anjohan, the movement and lighting in the new scene are both great. The issue with the Leia in your last scene is she just pops up. You are having a reverse perspective problem. Obiwan starts larger and gets smaller as he moves away. Leia pops up small and gets a little larger. I would match her to a relevant spot on Obi’s back so perspective stays more consistent. Otherwise, I am really being sold that she is with him which vastly helps the scene.

I agree that the elevator (recolored) would be better used going down to enhance the transition from market to underwater.

Yeah, it would be possible to make she appear a bit earlier in the scene in Obi’s back, instead of later? Maybe it will be better. To me it also kinda gives the impression that she’s popping up in the scene.

But the whole drama with Luke is just so nonsensical and, arguably, canon-breaking. And Reva’s redemption for having spared Luke is unearned. None of it works, and I feel like it’s all more offensively bad than Obi-wan sparing Vader’s life—especially since it is conceivable that Obi-Wan would spare his life.

I agree I never want to see that half of Episode 6 ever again. It just does not make sense from a canonical POV.

Is the way it is now perfect, no … does it work, yeah.
