Just Got FF VII: Advent Children!

Being so busy, I forgot that this had even come out yet in the states, but as soon as I saw it, I had to have it. Quite thrilling. Finally, a movie that actually manages to translate RPG-style fighting into the real world. And hearing all the orchestrated remixes of Uematsu's work was amazing. They even managed to work in the victory fanfare at one point, very humorously. Amazing story, amazing fighting. Reno and Rude shone. My only gripe is that it occasionally seemed like a cell phone advertisement what with the prevalence of almost every character having one. Vincent in particular seemed to have an obsessed with cell phones, as he mentioned it in his "battle cry," and in the special feature, "Remembrance of Final Fantasy VII" (also really awesome) he says that Yuffie has no right to call his phone.

So, anybody else seen it yet?

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I do want to at least give this a watch.

As for the cell phone thing that does sound a bit gratuitous but then again the Japanese are cell phone obsessed like no other culture on Earth... way moreso than here in the U.S.

yeah, the cell thing got old, but it was straight from the game....

thought the subtitles could have been better, they ended up getting stuck on when I watched it and they didn't match the lines very well, in most cases the subtitles were actually better.

Welcome to the boards!

I agree that I put up with the cell phone bit based solely on the PHS from the game (what the hell does that stand for anyway?), but did it have to be a real cell phone model that was used for the movie? It hardly makes sense, although I admit it looks cool.

Eh, I wasn't too impressed with the dub. I mean, it was tolerable and not bad at all (especially compared to some truly hideous dubs, like DBZ, but you can't get much worse than it, so that's not exactly saying much), but it still doesn't hold a candle to the original.

I picked this one up last week. I have mixed feelings about it. Visually, it looks stunning, yet....somehow I think Final Fantasy: Spirits Within looked more realistic. I don't know, maybe they were going for an anime/videogame look over realism this time around. Story wise it was weak. Action wise, it was badass. Lastly, I am normally a big fan of dubs, but the dub this time isn't all that great. As an anime fan I recognized many of the english voice actors. Unfortuantely, they hired some b-list celebs to voice the main characters, which results in wooden, phony dialogue. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the movie, but it has some drawbacks. Overall, it was worthwhile watching and I'm proud to have it in my collection. Anyone who is a fan of the game should definitely watch.

Well, the DVD has both audio tracks, so...

And BrikHaus, I think this was a big improvement from Spirits Within. I mean, I haven't seen it in a while, but I know a lot of the backgrounds looked nearly photorealistic this time, and there were a lot of times the characters did too. Obviously, the less grounded in reality a character design is, the more obvious his/her nature beacame (ex. Tifa and Aerith looked extremely real, Cloud a bit less so, and Loz was much more obviously fake). I thought the story was pretty good... well, that is to say, the character story was really good. The "plot" story was more or less there to push the character story along. I'm not really a fan of dubs in general. I'd much prefer to watch any foreign film in its native language. Dubs are almost always inherently worse, simply because of the nature of the work.
