Don't stress yourself out over it. I probably would have found it myself by now, but my girlfriend made me promise to wait for her to watch the special features since we're sharing this whole Serenity experience together. Sigh, it's driving me crazy, though. At least I managed to sneak a peek at the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial, or I might not have made it. ^_^

I went through the special features again on my own, and I finally found the quote you're talking about, greencapt. It's in the "Future History: The Story of Earth That Was" documentary. It has Joss talking about how he read this book about the Civil War... "and it made me think of the Millenium Falcon... because a lot of things make me think of the Millenium Falcon." And then it cuts away to a shot on set while filming, and, for reasons I can't quite figure out, one of the crew shouts to an area offscreen and says, "You think we should send a picture of that to George Lucas?" and people laugh.

Firefly kicks ass.

Serenity kicks ass.

Just a whole lot of serious ass-kicking going on there. I mean Orson Scott Card basically called Serenity the best scifi movie ever. He said that if he ever did let Hollywood do Ender's Game, he wants it to be as good as Serenity, or not done at all.

The DVDs of the series and film are selling extremely well. I think it's very likely we'll see either another season of the series picked up by SciFi or Fox, or some straight to DVD movies. After seeing what Whedon's done with it so far, it would definitely be a blind buy for me.

Damn- and I had hoped I was going crazy!

Glad you found it! Be interesting to know just what they were talking about though.

I think I'm going to try to show 'Serenity' to a non-Firefly, non-Serenity fan/newbie tonight. He should dig it I hope.

I actually used to agree with that battlewars. I *liked* the Buffy series but was far from ga-ga about it and would probably not buy the series on DVD. Angel, as a series, I could care less about. I thought 'Alien 4' was pure ass and that more than anything kept me from following anything Joss had done since.... until.... I actually had completely missed even hearing about 'Firefly' when it was on TV for its brief stint. But much like I did with the new BSG series on Sci-Fi, I gave the series a look on DVD... and got hooked! I actually think that Whedon's fans tend to over-rate him to the degree that George Lucas' fans do but the difference being Joss doesn't seem to buy into the hype. Maybe he's a great actor or something but I honestly believe him when he does interviews- believe that he's a geek like us and found a way (as many of us would like to) towork that geekness into a career doing the things we love.

Lucas on the other hand went all Howard Hughes on us and fully buys into, apparently, his own bullshit.

But Firefly/Serenity kicks ass because of the chemistry with the cast as well as Joss.

I'd say if you had actors who didn't get along in RL together, I'd say the show would be a bust.

But its not.

Why don't you show your friend the Serenity episode instead of the movie (unless that's what you're talking about)? I am continually grateful for having seen the show before the movie as nothing was spoiled for me, and the pilot is done so well (and it's only about half an hour shorter than the movie) that that alone is what got me hooked.

And I agree about Joss. I never cared for anything he did before. And I'll probably never really be into Buffy or Angel. I never heard of Firefly until a few months ago. But he does seem to be a champion of geeks. The Mick Jagger of geeks if you will. He genuinely seems to care about what he does and cares about the people who care about what he does. "I'm never interested in making things that people like... only what they love."

I might. I thought about it but I'm really not sure if he'll ever sit down and watch the rest (a shame) and I'm actually kinda curious as to what someone who knows nothing of the series thinks of the film.

I think that's one thing that many creators will never understand- the cheapest film or the silliest TV concept can work IF the creators and stars *believe* in what they're doing and try to have a good time with it. The glory days of the film studios doing contract films but actually having talented people behind them are long dead. There's a few filmmakers who genuinely work their way up the chain and grow their craft but so many 'big' Hollywood flics are made by hired 'it-persons of the month' just to get the opening weekend receipts without any care for the people making them or starring in them. I'd rather pay good money to support the Joss Whedons or the Sam Raimis of the world than lay down anything for whatever music-video-director-du-jour was hired to remake some horror movie or helm the latest comic book movie.

But I digress...

I have read many stories about people who saw Serenity and immediately went to find out more about it and ended up becoming huge Firefly fans because of it. In fact, it was the same for my friend who introduced me to Firefly. She had seen Serenity in theatres and then borrowed Firefly from a friend of hers, and then she showed me the pilot episode.

Yeah, I saw Serenity pretty much on the recommendation of the guys on this board, and I loved it. It really felt like a GOOD Star Wars movie - that is to say, GL should have used a similar approach in creating the prequels - characterisation, characterisation, characterisation dammit!

I have since seen a few episodes of Firefly here and there on the SciFi channel here (I'm currently in America on a holiday), and it's pretty good - but I guess I find it easier to sit through a movie than to sit through back to back episodes with commercials and cliffhangers...

I am definitely hanging out for a sequel to the movie. I hope the powers that be realise how many people love this franchise.

Have you gotten around to seeing Serenity yet, AWK?

Nope, but I'm planning to. It sounds like my kind of film.

But first, I want to watch the complete Firefly series so I will get "the full effect" by seeing everything in chronological order. And since that was also the release order, I agree with you on what order to watch it in, in this case.

Like I said about greencapt's friend, if you're interested, you should really watch the series first. In my opinion, it's better than the movie, and it makes the movie mean so much more, even though it's great on its own. And it's not as though watching the series is a huge commitment. Fourteen episodes. If the pilot was an hour and a half, and the other thirteen were about fourty-five minutes (this is running time excluding commercials), the total amount of time spend would be eleven hours and fifteen minutes... to watch an entire series of television. Well worth your time.

So is this sort of a cult show now? Or is it mainstream at all?
Author
Time
Most of its fanbase is of the cult variety. People who frequent comic cons and stuff. People like us. The movie made a little bit more mainstream, but it's not really.

Well my friend just left having watched 'Serenity' and having no prior knowledge of the show. He really REALLY liked the film and drove away with my DVD set of 'Firefly' borrowed and anxious to watch! He had some valid questions about the film that I was able to answer for him but they were few and far between. I'll keep you posted....

Oh and... HAN SHOT FIRST!

Well, I'm glad your friend found Serenity as appealing as it should be. Another future Browncoat, hopefully. Please be sure to keep me posted.

And, um, set your weapons for stun.

For some reason, I never got into the movie Serenity. I am sorry to say that the movie bored the hell out of me. It is confusing, everybody else around me loves it. << Ducking every bricks trhown at me>> Possibly because I never watched the tv show, I don't know, maybe one day , I learn to appreciate the movie, or maybe there was too much hype by the Firefly fans, who knows...

Heya dub- don't sweat it... we all like different things! If you're really bored you should give the TV show a chance (especially on DVD without the commercials). You might be pleasantly surprised.... but then again.

Yeah I might borrow the tv dvd set from one my friends, have a look and then I will see the movie with different eyes

Well I watched Serenity fro the first time this past weekend and I absolutely loved it. I had never seen the series but I heard (read) you guys talking about it so I gave it a try.

Other than the ship resembling a big chicken I really loved the show and I have the Firefly series coming in this week from netflix as a result of seeing the movie.

If the series is half as good as the movie I can't believe they took it off the air but these are the same assholes who took Space: Above and beyond off the air after only one season too. Anyone who knew that series knows how great it was and Fox killed it after only one series.
If only I'd been born in the Republic.

Same kind of situation but maybe even worse. Fox showed a few episodes out of the intended order, didn't know how to market it (though it certainly IS hard to classify) but basically just wasn't willing to give it a chance. Viva la networks!
